Jack held up a square piece
of manila paper with generous
margins about an oval, vermilion-colored,
two-cent stamp.
"At first," he said, "I was
going to toss this in a pile along
with a lot of cheap duplicates,
but then I noticed something
peculiar about it. Do you?"
I didn't. So far as I could
see, the stamp was like any of
thousands of others I had seen.

' "It is," replied Jack, "but

Personally, I don't care for
a table glassware that is of an
opaque color. It doesn't look
attractive. There is even some
thing gross about it.
But no one should ever let
that attitude blind him to the
fact that many people feel so
differently on the subject that
soma of the best values lie in
glass of this very type.
A case In point is that of milk
white glass in what is known
as tha wheat pattern. .
Just a few weeks ago I visited
a store in which another custom
er was in the act of buying a
pitcher, one in that very design.
At least, that is the way it seem
ed to me. The deal had already
progressed to the point where
the man had some bills in his
hands and was telling the clerk
to wrap the pitcher up.
But he didn't buy it, as I

It was what is known as a
Liverpool Halfpenny a British
coin put out in honor of Presi
dent Washington and sold to
merchants in America who found
them quite acceptable to their
customers as change. .-
The piece was an excellent
example of its kind and in sur
prisingly good condition for one
of the so-called Washington
pieces of British origin that are
generally badly worn.
I asked Charles, the head of
the family, what they intended
to do with it. Apparently the
coin was communal property
that was going into at least its
third generation on the mantle
piece. He looked at the bust of

that suggest anything to you?"
I looked closely at the paper
but could detect nothing to dis
tinguish it in an outstanding
way.
"Well, if you will notice,'
said Jack, "the lines in the paper
itself are not on the diagonal
whereas those of practically all
stamped envelopes put out in
the last century were."
Jack replied, "I discovered
that practically all newspaper
wrappers sold by the govern
ment from 1860 to 1934, when
they were discontinued, were
made of laid paper in which
the lines are either vertical or
horizontal. Just like this."
"So what?" I asked. "So what
does that mean?"
"That I am about $100 richer
than I thought I was," Jack said.
"That's what it catalogues at.
Of course, if it were unused, it
would be worth $200. But I
won't kick."

when I walked back along that
same aisle on my way out. For
there was the pitcher standing
on the counter.
I picked the piece up and
examined it carefully, thinking
the other customer must have
found some flaw.
There was none, though.
Furthermore, the price, accord
ing to a tiny sticker on the
bottom, was only $14.50.
I handed the clerk the money
and asked if he had any more
pieces with the wheat design,
which consists of a head of
wheat in a shield panel.
"No," he said. "This is the
only piece around here. That's
what makes it so hard to sell."
At it happened, I couldn't
hang onto the pitcher. A collect
or friend of mine took it away
from me for $45 and thought
she was very lucky.
COIN VALUE SMALL

over the date 1791.
"I don't know," he said. "For
a time, we were going to have
it set in the keystone of the
fireplace. But if we did that,
then we couldn't see the ship."
He turned the coin over. On
the reverse was a three-master,
under full sail, a ship of war
apparently. Beneath it, near the
lower edge of the coin, were
crossed olive branches. The de
tail in which the ship was done,
the rigging, the bellying of the
sails, even the surrounding
waves, was excellent.
I asked if they had ever con
sidered selling it. He shook his
head.
"We wouldn't do a thing like
that," he. said. "But one day,
just for fun, I looked it up in a
catalogue when I was in Boston.
All it's worth is $75 dollars."
