In the early years of psychia
try doctors studied insane and
neurotic persons; they described
their symp
toms, they
tried to classi
fy their trou
bles, they rcc
o g n i z e d the
fact that ner
vous diseases
are inherited,
and they did
what they

tical ways to help their patients.
As the great T. A. Ross, of Eng
land, once wrote me, he began
as a general practitioner, and
gradually, by studying his ner
vous patients and talking to
them day after day, he learned
to help them. He thought he was
a much better psychiatrist for
having started without any in
doctrination with the dogmas of
any school. Instead of telling
people why they thought as they
did or acted as they did, he kept
asking them how they had been
thinking and what was troubling
them.
Then came Freud with a lot
of theories, some of them queer
and highly improbable, and
some of them unprovable. He
assumed that mental troubles
are due to sexual conflicts in
early childhood. Some of these
ideas were so weird that even
Freud's closest followers could
not stomach them. If laymen
were to wade through some of
the books written by certain
psychoanalysts, they would be
surprised and disgusted. Some
analysts tell me they cannot
stand the mental antics of some
of their fellows. They say the
stuff their "lunatic fringe peo
ple" write has no relation to
science. I know some analysts
who became so disgusted with
it all that they quit; others have
told me they would love to quit
but haven't the courage to make
the break, or cannot afford to
do it because of financial needs.
Unduly Large Influence
Although the analysts make
up only a small group among
psychiatrists, by hanging togeth
er and by writing in such a way
as to catch the ear of the public,
they have had an unduly large
influence on psychiatry and on
the thought of the world. Many
psychiatrists of the old school
who growl under their breath at
the situation which they abhor.
admit to me that they do not
dare speak out for fear of being
ganged-up and blacklisted in
university departments and in
psychiatric societies.
As Dr. Percival Bailey said at
the recent big meeting of the
Psychiatric association, psycho
analysis is hardly a science.
Many able psychiatrists have al
ways felt that. Others have
shown that the cult of psycho
analysis resembles much more a
religion than a science. It has its
revered head of the church, and
anyone who disagrees with him
is excommunicated.
His name becomes anathema,
and is never mentioned again.
Dr. Bailey quoted the great
brain surgeon. Dr. Harvey Crush
ing, who said, "The task of the
psychiatrists is to get back into
the asylums and laboratories
which they have left behind
them, and prove . . . that their
concepts have scientific validity."
Under the surface, rebellious
feelings have long been gather
ing, and at last they have come
out. The more conservative and
really scientific psychiatrists are
now joining with the new phy
siologic or laboratory - research
psychiatrists to build a new sci
ence of psychiatry.
At the recent meeting most
vocal of the attack on the status '
quo was made by able Dr. Per-1
cival Bailey, of the University
of Illinois. He objected to sev-!
eral things that he feels are
wrong with modern psychiatry-
He dislikes not only the doings
of some analysts but also the do
ings of some old-fashioned psy
chiatrists. Thus, he has been ap
palled over those cases in which
an ill-advised prefrontal lobot
omy (a destructive operation on
the front of the brain) leaves the
victim a mental "mess."
Tragedy in Many Cases
what is bad today is that an
operatiog which may be well
worth doing in the case of a dan
gerous, hopelessly insane person
is offered to a sane person who
perhaps is suffering severe pain
In many such cases the perform
ance of a lobotomy would prob
ably be a tragedy.
Dr. Bailey wisely objected
also, to the use of a long series
of electro-shock treatments
cases in which this treatment is
not indicated and hence does no
good. He knows that some psy
chiatrists have largely given up
talking to their patients. They
just put them upon the table and
start giving them shock treat
ments.
What is hopeful today is that a
new group of men are entering
the field of psychiatry men of
science who, with laboratory
methods, are studying the func
tions of the brain as they have
never been studied before.
For years, physicians have
suspected that an insane person
might occasionally go into
spell because of the presence in
his blood of some nerve poison
This suspicion was stregthened
when lysergic acid amide was
found to produce temporary psy
chosis in volunteers. Other such
drugs are being found. Now
comes Dr. Robert S. Heath and
his co-workers who report hav
ing found in the blood of schizo
phrenics a substance that causes
monkeys and men to become
for a few hours, mentally dis
turbed. Obviously a new and
better day is dawning in psy
chiatry.
Dr. Alvarez hopes his readers
will understand that it would be
impossible for him to answer
requests for information or to
attempt to diagnose by mail.

Premier Nikolai Bulganin has
written a new letter to Presi
dent Eisenhower, the Russian
Embassy said yesterdav.
Soviet Ambassador Georgi N.
Zaroubin delivered the Bulgan
in letter to Secretary of State
John Foster Dulles. Zaroubin
remained in Dulles' office at the
State Department only two
minutes.
Zaroubin declined to give re
porters any clue to the contents.
But he hinted the letter will be
made public soon.
"You know that Prime Minis
ter Bulganin and the President
have carried on an exchange of
letters and this continues it,"
he said. "I cannot sav more. I
think you will know very soon."
Six Persons Injured in
Passenger Plane Fire

gear collapsed on landing at
Greater Pittsburgh Airport.

Neutral Truce Teams
Bow To UN Demand
Panmunjom, Korea - - (U.R)
The neutral nations truce in
spection teams have bowed to
a demand by the United Nations
command that they get out of
the Republic of Korea, it has
been announced.
Maj. Gen. Robert Gard, sen
ior U.N. delegate to the Military
Armistice Commission, told
newsmen the teams agreed to
leave and were only awaiting
for the 16 United Nations that
fought in Korea to set the date.
Gard made the statement ater

which he rejected a compromise

and South Korea and reaffirmed
his decision to expel the truce
