Redlegs Take Over 1st Place
in NL: Buhl Throws 4-Hitter
As Braves Bump Dodgers 4-1
Br FRED DOWN
United Press Sports Writer
Bob Buhl's ability tar beat the
Brooklyn Dodgers stamped him
today as the ace of the Milwau
kee pitching staff and the fellow
who is keeping the Braves in
the tightly-bunched National
League race.
The 27-year-old right hander
has been rated behind veteran
stars Lew Burdette. Warren
Spahn and Cene Conley in the
Milwaukee mound setup but his
4 1 decision over the Dodgers
Thursday added to his distinc
tion of being the only Brave
pitcher to beat the world cham
pions this year.
Buhl yielded only four hits
and four walks Thursday as the
Braves halted the Dodgers' four
game winning streak and re
tained possession of fourth place
only two games behind the
first-place Cincinnati Redlegs.
He helped win his own game
with a two-run double that
capped a three-run rally. Carl
Erskine suffered his fourth
straight loss since he pitched
the second no-hittcr of his career
on May 12. I
Redlegs Take First
"The hard-hitting Redlegs. who
haven't won a pennant since
1940, took over first place when
they came from behind twice to
down the Philadelphia Phillies,
8-5. It was the fourth straight
triumph and ninth in 12 games
for Cincinnati.
Catcher Smoky Burgess snap
ped a 5-5 tie with a homer to
open the eighth inning and the
Redlegs sewed up the decision
when Roy McMillan's single.
Johnny Temple's triple and
Frank Robinson's sacrifice fly
added two tallies.
The Chicago Cubs vacated the
cellar when Bob Rush spun a
six-hitter to beat the Pirates, 5-2,
and drop the losers into third
place. The idle St. Louis Cardi
nals are in second.
Eddie Miksis walloped a
homer, triple and two singles to
lead the Cubs' 11-attack which
aiso included a homer by Walt
Moryn.
Yanks Trample As
In the American League, the
New York Yankees stretched
their first-place to 4Vi games
vhon they pummelled the Kan
sas City Athletics, 9-1. Yogi Ber
ra hit his 16th homer of the year
and fourth in four games and
Hank Bauer also homered for
the Yankees. Bob Turley went
the route for the first time this
year to win his third game.
George Zuverinkf making his
23rd relief appearance, pro
tected the lead for two innings
as the Baltimore Orioles ended
a five-game losing streak with a
5-2 decision over the Cleveland
Indians. Gus Triandos, Tito
Francona and Willie Miranda
had two hits each for the Ori
oles. Ninth-inning triples by Nellie
Fox and Dave Philley plus two
sacrifice flies enabled the Chi
cago White Sox to beat the
Washington Senators, 7-5, and
Ted Lepcio singled home the
winning run in the 10th inning
as the Boston Red Sox downed
the Detroit Tigers, 6-5, in other
AL games.

HARDTOP SPILLS Upsets like this are hot unusual when driv
ers make their autos go fast and furious in a hardtop race. Plenty
of hard driving is foreseen for the second program of the season
Saturday night at the Valley View speedway near Ashland.
Hardtoppers
Vie Again at
Valley View
Red-hot auto racing was seen
at the Valley View speedway
last week end with plenty of
spills and thrills, coupled with
good, hard driving, to start off
the 1956 season in the Rogue
River valley. More of the same,
but in larger quantities is antici
pated this Saturday night, June
9, with the addition of some
more old hardtop favorites
among drivers.
Leadfoot Lou Kurz has just
announced that his hot Hudson
will be on the speedway to pro
vide plentv of competition for
anyone interested. At the same
time, Neil Wooldridge informed
the management that he will be
chauffeuring a very fast racing
car for his first time out this
season. -
Allen Bausman, K25. from
Klamath Falls, proved that his
main event win of last Saturday
night wasn't just a fluke by do
ing the same things on his home
track Sunday. This Saturday
night he'll be shooting for three
in a row.
At least two more of the vet
eran drivers have signified their
intention to return to the fold
Saturday Flying Floyd McClana
han and Elmer Sizemore, both
say they are ready to provide
plenty of competition for anyone
wearing a crash helmet and driv
ing a racing car.
Saturday night's card again
should show anything can hap
pen in hardtop racing.
Cars will time in starting at
6:30 p.m. and the first race will
be at 8 p.m.

Rogue Valley Baseball League
has its third round of games this
Sunday and with schools having
closed their doors, teams may
be at their strongest so far this
season.
A case in point is the Cheney
Colt crew. They'll be joined for
Sunday action by Duane Sides,
pitcher, and Ed Reinking, out
fielder, of the Medford high
club, and by Donn Johnson, in
fielder, and Larry Bigham, out
fielder, both ex-Crater high.
Johnson has been playing for
Oregon State college Rooks. Big
ham played Linfield college jay
vee ball a year ago but wasn't
eligible this season at San Jose
State college.
The Colts, fighting to establish
themselves among the loop lead
ers, play at Camp White this
Sunday at 2 p.m. Camp White,
still after its first RVL win, is
ambitious to get out of the
cellar.

attention on the Ashland-Glen-dale
mix. Each of the clubs is
unmarred so far in the circuit.
Butte Falls and Eagle Point, like
the Whiters, are after their first
victory in the RVL, with, one of
them due for disappointment.
Sides or Keller
Manager Harry Tonn is ex
pected to choose between Duane
Sides and Kay Kelley in naming
his pitcher for the Colts Sunday.
Catcher will be either Howard
Morris, Linfield and ex-Crater
high, or Laval Meunier, ex-St.
Mary's.
Harvey Tonn, Southern Ore
gon college and ex-Crater, may
be at first base and Morrie
Churchman, SOC and ex-Suther-lin,
at second. Either Vern Par
ent, ex-Crater, or Keith Johnson,
ex-Southern Oregon, is to be at
third with Johnson at shortstop.
Reinking, Bigham and Bob Ser
ak may be in the outfield. Ray
Oakes, ex-Seaside high, could
be in the line-up in either the

Ex-Medford high men pre
