Hear Conversations
Portland (U.R) Multnomah
county's vice-probing grand Jury
settled down today to start hear
ing quantities cf wire recorded
conversations, an estimated 70
hours worth.
Attorney General Robert Y.
Thornton, who is directing the
probe, yesterday took steps to
insure secrecy of deliberations.
Newspaper and television repre
sentatives were asked to vacate
an across-the-hall room they had
been using.
State police also went careful
ly over the room in the state of
fice building, apparently look
ing for any possible hidden
microphones.
Thornton also brought in
Fred A. Miller, an assistant from
his office, to help in doing legal
research and assemble evidence
for presentation.
Witnesses also were expected
to be called today.

Hollywood Pair Admit
To Secret Marriage
Hollywood (U.R) Actor Rob
ert Dix, son of the late western
film star Richard Dix, and ac
tress Janet Lake today admitted
they were married secretly in
Las Vegas, Nev., last Thursday.
The MGM starlet previously
had announced she would marry
Dix June 28 in religious rites of
the Baha'i faith, a Persian cult
to which both belong.
"We didn't want to say any
thing about the Las Vegas cere
mony," Dix said, "because we
wanted to break the news to
Janet's parents when they come
here."

the actress. Incidentally, the
Broadway Central hotel is still
in business.
Eisenhower Makes
Quick Trip To Farm
Washington (U.R) President
Eisenhower made a quick round
trip to his Gettysburg, Pa. farm
Wednesday and conferred with
two Aberdeen Angus cattle
breeders.
The breeders, Allan Ryan and
Lee Leachman of Ankony Farm,
Rhinebeck, N.Y., discussed with
Mr. Eisenhower his plans for
expanding his Aberdeen Angus
herd.
The President took off In his
twin-engined commuter plane at
1:06 p.m., (EDT) and landed at
the Gettysburg Airport 24 min
utes later. He returned at 4:25
p.m. (EDT), making the trip in
28 minutes.
