Virus Overlooked
As Cancer Cause
Detroit (U.R) A Nobel prize
winner and world renowned
cancer authority told doctors
and specialists at the National
Cancer Conference here yester
day they have overlooked the
virus as the possible cause of
cancer.
Dr. Wendell M. Stanley, direc
tor of the University of Cal
ifornia's virus laboratory, re
minded the 1200 conference del
egates that viruses had been
kn n to cause cancer in ani
mals since 1911.
"We know that viruses can
mutate to form new strains
which cause disease symptoms,"
he said. "We know that viruses
may have different effects, de
pending on the age, genetics,
state of nutrition and hormone
balance of the host.
"We know that different cancer-inciting
agents can activate
latent viruses, with consequent
cell destruction," And finally,
"We know that virsuses can
cause cancer."
'Sell Oregon' Drive Urged by Gov. Smith
Pendleton (U.R) A "Sell
Oregon" campaign was advo
cated by Gov. Elmo Smith here
yesterday as a major plank of a
nine-point program designed to
encourage a more prosperous
and sound agriculture for Ore
gon. Gov. Smith reviewed some of
the causes of the ills of agricul
ture and then launched into a
series of proposals which, he
said, might tend to bolster a
strong Oregon farm economy.
He spoke before the annual con-
Senate Committee
Approves Seaton
Washington flJ.Rl The Sen
ate Interior Committee has
unanimously'approved the nom
ination of Fred A. Seaton to be
secretary of interior.
Seaton, former Nebraska sena
tor and recently a White House
aide, was named by President
Eisenhower last week to succeed
Douglas McKay, who resigned
to run for the Senate.
Committee approval was by
voice vote after its members
questioned Seaton for an hour
and a half on federal power
policies and other matters with
in the department's jurisdiction.

vention of the Oregon State
Grange.
Other Proposals
In addition to encouragement
of greater production of di
versified crops "in which sub
stitutions to meet the law of
supply and demand may be read
ily made." Gov. Smith's other
proposal included:
With wheat in mind "let us,
as the No. 1 point for a stronger
farm program, do everything we
can to encouraee a non-partisan
approach to federal farm pro
grams." Work toward solution of the
beef producers' problem of
overproduction. .
Tell the farm story, and tell it
to consumers, businessmen, leg
islators and state officials.
Help to develop off-farm work
in slack seasons and to maintain
satisfactory housing and work
ing conditions for seasonal har
vest labor. .
Encourage research in market
ing costs to find out more about
the spread between farm prices
and the housewife's grocery
sales slip.
Use state and federal agricul
tural statistical services in
planning year to year farm op
erations. Work together for agricul
ture's common interests.
Pointing out that research and
promotion are necessary for suc
cessful expansion of the state's
diversified crops. Gov. Smith
said "Sell Oregon" means pro
motion, backed by quality, ap
pealing packages and containers,
good marketing and reasonable
prices.
DANGER STRESSED
Los Angeles (U.R) Residents
of Los Angeles county were re
minded today that despite this
modern age dangerous forms of
wildlife still inhabit the area
Agriculture Commissioner Har
old J. Ryan said extra hunters
and trappers are needed to track
down bobcats and coyotes which
prey on county livestock.

Misinformation of Students
Viewed as Anti-Morse Effort
Bt
SEN. RICHARD NEUBERGER
Washington, D. C. Special
We received a petition signed
by 10 sophomores of Klamath
Union High school challenging
the statement in our April news-
lftter that both Winston Church
ill and Wayne Morse had
changed political parties in sim
ilar fashion. The petition claimed
that Churchill had resigned his
eat in Parliament when he
changed parties and that Morse
should have done this in the
United States Senate.
We immediately checked
again with the Library of Con
gress and with authoritative
biographies of Churchill. This
great Englishman was elected to
the House of Commons iti 1900
as a Conservative Party mem
ber. On May 31, 1904, he ex
changed his chair for one across
the aisle and joined the Liberal
Party. He then remained in Par
liament until January, 1906.
when he was re-elected as a
Liberal.
This is now what disturbs
Ms: Who cares enough about
partisan politics to goad high
school students into sending us
an inaccurate petition? To whom
is the defeat of Wayne Morse so
important that they would de
liberately misinform young peo
ple about the career of perhaps
the greatest statesman living to
day? Is political gain worth
sowing seeds of partisan hate
and bias ' in the minds of stu
dents? No McKay Endorsement
In picking a successor to Sec
retary McKay, the President had
an opportunity to endorse the
McKay policies of surrendering
Hells Canyon, of giving away
the Al Sarena timber in the
Rogue River National Forest,
of permitting oil and gas wild
catting on our wildlife refuges.
The President declined to make
this endorsement.
By going totally outside the
Interior Department to select
ex-Senator Fred Seaton as the
new Secretary, President Eisen
hower repudiated the McKay re
gime. Mr. McKay and a whole set
of conservative Republicans had
been urging the appointment of
Under Secreraty Clarence A.
Davis, the man who back-
stopped such relinquishment of
natural resources as the Al Sa
rena deal and the wildlife gas
drilling. Davis had served as
"acting Secretary" since Mc
Kay's departure. He was Mc
Kay's right-hand man. He was
the man whose defense of Al
Sarena got such headlines in the
Oregon press.
But he wasn't the man whom
Dwight Eisenhower chose to
head the Interior Department.

It is my understanding that for
mer1 Senator Seaton is a capable
man, of integrity and of mod
erate views on resource develop
ment. I am sure I will not agree
by any means with all his posi
tions. But I rejoice that the
President left McKay's aides at
the post and selected a man not
associated with the "give-away"

Vacant Public Land
Withdrawn on Coast
Washington (U.R) A 1281
acre tract of vacant public land
near Florence on the Oregon
coast has been- withdrawn from
all appropriations under the
public land laws, the Depart
ment of the Interior announced
today.
The announcement said that
the withdrawal would include
mining locations and mineral
leasing and would be effective
immediately.
The withdrawal was approved
to allow several federal agen
cies and the Port of Florence to
provide stabilization of sand
dunes in the area.
More than $400,000 will have
been invested in addition to
large sums by the Army Corps
of Engineers in dredging, in the
cooperative project. Officials
said that the withdrawal was
necessary to protect the invest
ment against the extension of
strip mining activities in the
older beach sands south of the
withdrawn area.
Festival Princess
Selection Tonight
Portland (U.R) Portland's
Rose Festival swings into high
gear tonight when one of eight
lovely princesses is named as
queen of the 1956 festival.
Officials of the realm of Ro
saria quickly pointed out yester
day that damp skies will not
have any bearing on the queen
selection program slated for to
night.' The girls spent yesterday re
hearsing for the big stadium
show tonight while the junior
court made a whirl of social en
gagements at various social and
service organizations.
By tonight the completment
of nine Navy ships slated to be
in the Portland harbor for the
festival are all scheduled to be
at their berths at the seawall. .
