Suspect Arrested
In Child Kidnaping
Portland UP Marcus H.
Renhard of Portland was taken
into custody at Vancouver,
Wash., Saturday and was being
held ior Eureka, Calif., authori
se who want him on a kidnap
ing charge.
With Renhard when ha was
picked up was his three-year-old
son Johnny whom Renhard is
accused of taking from a Eureka
day nursery Thursday.
Police in three West Coast
Utes had been looking for the
43-year-old lumberman since his
wife filed the kidnaping charges.
She claimed that she had been
granted full custody of the child
when she and Renhard were di
vorced in Grants Pass, Ore., a
year ago.
Renhard was taken into cus
tody at a Vancouver motel by
Clark county sheriffs officers.

Secretary Charles Wilson and
Adm. Felix B. Stump flew to
the Pacific testing grounds at
Eniwetok yesterday to observe
the eurrent series of H-bomb
tests.
Wilson, who arrived here Sun
day, said he was making the
trip because he wants to keep
abreast of the latest develop
ments ki the field of nuclear
weapons.
He is scheduled to return to
Honolulu June 8.

Brother David, Heartbreaker of Silent Films, On Way Back To Beloved Indians

Arleigh A. Burke, chief of naval
operations, said Sunday the
United States will never start
an aggressive war, but "we will
not be pushed around." U.S.
strength rests basically on "mor
al principles," he told a com
mencement audience at Notre
Dame university. These princi
ples, coupled with economic and
military strength, will be used
against "any tyrant or groups of
tyrants that threaten the cause
of freedom in the world," he
said.

David is on his way back to his
beloved Piute Indians without
funds for the house trailer he
wanted to help him bring the
word of God to them.
He is not bitter. Quite the
contrary, he is happy and hum
ble. But the failure could have
been galling to a man of weaker
spirit.
Tor it was In New York, be
fore the first world war, that he
got his start as a stage matinee
idol, and from here he went to
Hollywood to become a movie
star in the days of Valentino and
Nazimova.
Silent Film Heartbreaker
The man the Indians of three
Nevada reservations know and
love simply as Brother David, a
Protestant Episcopal lay mis
sioner, is Gareth Hughes, heart
breaker of the silent film era.
He is still handsome, at 62. With
flowing white hair, he looks a
bit saintly.

plans to devote the rest of his
life to them in a non-denominational

Became Nervous
The mileage between reserva
tions is great. About the only
way he can live while visiting
the Indians is in a trailer which
can be pulled by his old station
wagon. He came to New York
for a few days "to see the old
place again and put the bite on
somebody to get me a little 20
foot trailer so I can visit and
help my friends.
But a few days of pounding
the pavements made him nervous
"because I saw only white
faces, and I realized I could not
live away from the Indians." So
he took off without a trailer.
He had had some radio appear
ances planned, to tell how he
needed one, but he cancelled
them, fearing they might not be
in keeping with the religious
nature of his work and the dig
nity of his Indian friends
'"Aey're our only aristocrats."
With half of Hollywood sup
porting Las Vegas in one part of
Nevada, it might seem odd to
some to find a former star liv
ing with the Indians in another
part. But Hughes says: "I wor
shipped the Piutes from the start.
I never saw so much beauty as
in their old faces never such
patience. I thought of the broken
treaties, and I thought: 'Maybe
I can show them one white per
son who loves them.' "
Lived in Indian Country
He lived in Indian country
for four years before going into
a Massachusetts monastic order.
He emerged as Brother David
and was assigned to the three
reservations. For the last eight
years, as a lay missonary, he
has preached, baptized, con
ducted burials, run sewing
guilds, distributed clothing,
shared tragedy and happiness
with the Piute people.
From such signs as "Church
tomorrow, 11 a.m. Bro.
David," the Indian kids deduced
his name was "Bro" and that
affectionate name has stuck:
"Bro. I need dress. . .Bro.
Johnny don't have shoes. . .
Bro, our child is ill; please pray

Brother David's past is com
ing back in a queer way, now.
Sometimes some Indians get to
Reno and look at old silent films
on television: "Bro, I see you
on picture the other day. Good!"
It was 1919 when Gareth
Hughes left the New York stage
for Hollywood to play opposite
Clara Kimball Young in "The
Eyes Of Youth." He can't return
here without growing nostalgic
about such things as dancing
with Isadora Duncan in a Shake
