Bill To Prohibit
Liquor Service on
Airlines Expected

Kerned in a mood today to put
prohibition into effect, but only
on airplanes.
At the urging of pilots and
stewardesses, as well as temper
ance groups, a House Commerce
subcommittee has quietly clear
ed a bill to call a halt to air
borne tippling. It would end
what one House member termed
"flying saloon service" geared
more to profits than aerial
safety.
Approval Predicted
The full committee will take
up the bill next week. Chairman
J. Percy Priest (D-Tenn.) pre
dicted today it will be approved
and sent to the House floor for
a vote.
There is general agreement
that once it gets to the floor it
will be whooped to passage. This
close to the end of the session,
however, it could get lost in the
Senate.
The subcommittee acted re
cently after spokesmen for air
line pilots and crews related
case after case in which the
intoxicated passengers jeopard
ized comfort, safety, and some
times morals of other passengers
and crew members.
Hostess Chssed

an amorous, liqhtheaded passen
ger into the forward cockpit.

to peel off her clothes.
Not many airlines would be
affected. Of 47 lines serving do
mestic routes, only six serve
whiskey, some selling it at a
dollar a shot and others serving
it free. Two other lines serve
wine only.
Ike Urges Heat
On Postal Increase
Washington (U.R) President
Eisenhower urged Republican
congressional leaders today to
put the heat on to get his pro
posed mail rate increases passed
this year.
He made the appeal during
his weekly meeting with the
leaders at the White House. The
mail rate boosts face heavy con
gressional opposition in this elec
tion year.
Senate Republican Leader
William F. Knowland reported
that both the President and
Postmaster General Arthur E.
Summerfield threw their 'weight
behind the rate increase bill now
pending in te House.
They regard the bill as essen
tial for a "round postal system,"
Knowland said, and necessary to
the effort to achieve a balanced
federal budget.
Bodies of Missing
Fishermen Located
Bend (U.R) Bodies of C. A.
Happold and Ernest Harris, both
of Sandy, Ore., were found this
morning in the water of Crane
Prairie Reservoir south of here
Happuld and Harris, the latter
a Sandy city councilman, ' had
been missing since Friday, May
25. when they left for a fishing
trip to the irrigation project
lake. Searchers found their
bodies in a tangle of under
growth and submerged logs at
the eastern edge of the lake.
Roseburg Firm Bids
Low on Ashland Job

Highway Commission has re
ported a low bid of $7,840 for
installation of 21 luminaires at
. the Ashland interchange section
of Hichway 99. Low bidder was
Steeck Electric, Roseburg.
