Mrs. Roosevelt
Said "Greatest"
By Lecture Agent
Looking back over 19 yean of
working as booking agent with
the Leigh Lecture bureau, Mrs.
Barbara Applegate. wife of Rich
ard Applegate of Medford, re
cently stated in an interview that
Mrs. Franklin D. Roosevelt "was
absolutely the finest person she
ever worked with." Mrs. Apple
gate was the subject of an ex
tensive interview published re
cently in the "Columbian," cam
plus daily of the University of
Missouri at Columbia.
Mrs. Applegate, a graduate of
Stephens college, was meeting
with officials of Stephens and
Christian colleges and the Uni
versity of Missouri to arrange
for lecture speakers for the com
ing year when the interview was
granted. Mrs. Applegate, who
has worked with hundreds of the
great and near-great during her
years with the Leigh bureau,
stated that "Mrs. Roosevelt
standi out far and away above
everyone. Absolutely magnifi
cent." Mrs. Applegate said that
being a staunch Republican, she
had never voted for Franklin D.
Roosevelt for president, but that
she has the highest regard for
his widow.
"I don't think a finer person
every lived," Mrs. Applegate
was quoted by Glenn Troel
strup. Columbia reporter as say
ing. "She could have been a
prima-d o n n a but she lectured
sometimes for three weeks at a1
pace of two or three talks a day
and went by bus. train and
plane. Never once did she com
plain about anything and never
refused a request."
Mrs. Roosevelt'i recent visit
to Medford, arranged by Jack
son county Democrats for the
annual Roosevelt Memorial din
ner, was followed by many com
ments, both written and verbal,
which noted her extraordinarily
gracious and friendly person
ality. In the interview Mrs. Apple-
gate also spoke of her husband, !
the NBC foreign correspondent j
and former Southeast Asia man
ager of the United Press who was
held a prisoner In Red China for
so long. The Leigh bureau staff
member met the famous corres
pondent when he became one of
the bureau's clients, and six
months later they were married.
This was on March 21, 195S, the
second anniversary of Apple
gate's imprisonment. Mrs. Apple
gate said In the interview that
between his NBC and television
assignments in Chicago, where
the couple lives, her husband
continues to lecture all over the
United States, telling fellow
citizens of hit life as a foreign
correspondent, his seizure by the
Chinese while trying out a yacht
which he and two companions
planned to buy for a trip-around-the-world.
Last summer the Richard
Applegates were in Medford for
the 50th wedding anniversary
celebration of his parents, Mr.
and Mrs. Frank L. Applegate,
6 IS South Oakdale avenue.
The Columbian story of Mrs.
Applegate'i visit to the three
schools, Stephens, Christian and
the University of Missouri, was
sent back to Jackson county by
Miss Dinah Hutchinson, Apple
gate, a student at Stephens who
arrived home last week, for the
summer vacation.
