Hercules Constellation Is
Visible in Northern Sky

Try to imagine an infant in
the cradle strong enough, to
destroy two huge serpents. Thus
did Hercules, son of Jupiter,
king of the ancient gods, begin
a life of great physical prowess
and successful adventures.
Juno, wife of Jupiter but not
the mother of Hercules, tried in
every way possible to bring
about the lad's destruction. It
was she who sent the serpents
to destroy Hercules and his twin
brother while they slept. Seiz
ing a snake in each hand, Her
cules choked them to death.
Shows Wisdom
Hercules developed into a
splendid young man with great
physical strength and intelli
gence, who showed his wisdom
by choosing to follow Virtue and
win immortality though Luxury
tempted him with all the joys
and pleasures of life. In spite
of all this, the coastant enmity
of Juno caused him untold
anguish and suffering.
"What can I do to escape the
wrath of Juno?" he asked the
priestess at the sacred cavern.
"Journey to Mycenae and per
form the tasks which King
Eurystheus will assign to you,"
she answered. This brave young
man obeyed her command and
was assigned the gigantic under
taking known as th Twelve
Labors of Hercules.
He was successively ordered
to destroy the Nemean Lion;
slay the nine-headed beast called
the Hydra; capture and bring in
the wild stag from the hills of
Gerynae; bring in the Eryman
thian Boar; catch the stag sacred
to Diana; slay the Stympholian
Birds; kill the Cretan Bull; tame
the wild horse of Diomedes;
steal a thousand oxen from King
Geryon's herd: obtain some
golden apples from the tree of
Hesperides; bring the three
headed dog, Cerberus, back from
the realm of Pluto; and clean
the Augean Stables, which shelt
ered 12,000 oxen every night
and had not been cleaned for
thirty years. Hercules, by di
verting the course of a river
cleansed the stables in one day.
Aecomplishmants
The accomplishment of all
these assignments removed the
enmity of Juno, but aroused the
jealousy of his wife, who soaked
his garments with poison, caus
ing him to die an agonizing
death. Jupiter then placed him in
the heavens as a constellation.
Hercules is a large star pic
ture but not a conspicuous one
due to the fact that it contains
no stars of the first and second
magnitudes. Four stars that put
line a "wastebasket" or tram
pezium represent the body.
Above and below the "waste
basket" are stars which form
the arms and legs.
This star group Ties between
the bright orange-yellow star,
Arcturus, high in the southeast,
and sparkling Vega, low in the
northeast. Remember, that to
find Arcturus, you begin with
the last star in the handle of
the Big Dipper and follow an
imaginary line curving slightly
downward and to the right till
you come to a bright orange
yellow star.
A straight line downward and
to the northeast will reach blue
white scintillating Vega. Her
cules lies between these two
bright stars. The line mentioned
above will cross the "waste?
basket" which forms the body
of this famous giant. Extending
outward from each of the four
stars in the body are stars (seven
in all) that represent the arms
Venezuela Lake Becomes
Inland Sea With Canal
Maracaibo, Venezuela (U.R)
Lake Maracaibo, a 5,000-square-mile
fresh water body, became
an inland sea Friday with the
opening of a channel linking it
with the Gulf of Venezuela in
the Caribbean.
Completion of the $53 million
project permits seagoing vessels
free pasage to the lake. A 600-foot-wide,
35-foot-deep channel
was dug across a sand bar which
formerly prevented passage.

acter. On the western or right side
of Hercules' body is a faint hazy
patch, barely visible to the naked
eye, which proves to be one of
the beauty spots of the celestial
sphere when photographed with
a large telescope. This is one of
the 100 "globular" star clusters
found in our galaxy and is the
finest example of its kind.
"It is a huge ball of stars, forty
thousand of which can be dis
tinguished on photographs of the
cluster," say the astronomers.
Queerly enough, the same
stars that form a kneeling giant
are also called "The Butterfly,"
and it is not at all difficult to
trace the outline of that insect
in the fourteen stars of this sky
figure!
High School News Notes

The first words heard Monday
morning were, "The Craters are
here!" Students waited anxious
ly for the an
n o uncements
second period.
The Cra ten
had arrived,
and would be
passed out at
the end of the
seventh p e r i
od. The theme
of this year's
Crater was
The Puzzle." Everything in the
book centered around this theme.
Teachers had a time keeping
the students' minds on their
work, especially as blue annuals
floated around the room for sig
natures. Finally, the Craters
were not allowed to be signed
during classtime, and students
resorted to before and after
school signing.
The climax of the school year
brings many events. First and
most important are the finals,
some of which were given Thurs
day and Friday. The rest will
be given Monday.
The seniors are busy prac
ticing for baccalaureate and
graduation. Baccalaureate serv
ices will be held in the auditori
um this evening. The following
Friday night, the commence
ment exercises will be held. All
seniors are keeping their fingers
crossed for nice weather, as it
will determine whether or not
the exercises will be held at the
high school stadium.
If it is impossible to hold com
mencement outside, it will be
at Hedrick Junior High school,
due to the limited amount of
seating space at the high school.
Junior Tri-Hi-Y sponsored a
dance at the "Y" Saturday night.
Students all wore black and
white colors to match the black
and white theme of the affair.

Installation of next year's As
sociated Student Body officers
was held at the award assembly
Wednesda yaf ternoon. Past presi
dent Bruce Kellington presented
the gavel to Bruce West after
the new officers were sworn in.
All books will be turned in
next week, and students will
