ciation rolls Into Its third week

unbeaten In three conflicts and

blemished in two Jussles.
Medford Auto Upholstery has
won the only game it has been
able to play so far.
Last week saw only three of
the six scheduled games con
tested. Three were called off be
cause of bad weather. In addi
tion to the regular Monday, 1
Wednesday and Thursday slate
for next week, at least one
make-up fray will be played.
Auto Upholsters will meet the
YMCA Ysmen on Tuesday.
The association games are twi
light affairs with the regularly
slated hassles set, for action at
the Senior high school stadium.

New York, N.Y. An Ameri
can Legion junior baseball team
of IS players selected from
throughout the United States
will make a flying, six-week
tour of eight Latin American
countries next fall it has been
announced by National Com
mander J. Addington Wagner.
Commander Wagner said the
teen-age team, representative of
more than a million boys en
rolled in the 1956 American Le
gion Junior program, will visit
Colombia, Cuba, 1 Salvador,
Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama,
Puerto. -Rico and Venezuela,
probably between September 10
and October 20.
"The American Legion is spon
soring this tour as a good will
project. Commander Wagner
said. "We believe that this all-
representative American Legion
team can do a great deal to in
crease understanding and good
will for the United States in
Latin America. That is our hope

little-used steam locomotive rail
road engine was like, thanks to
an idea started by a sports store
operator.
The idea sprang up some time
ago when a man and his son
came into George Stautz sports
store shopping for a model train.
The youngster had his eye on a
fancy diesel model when- his fa
ther remarked to Stautz:
"You know, it won't be long
before kids don't know anything
about steam engines."
That remark started Stautz,
president of the Austin Rotary
club, thinking, and he felt some
thing ought to be done about it.
Several members started
working on the project and it
wasn't long before the Southern
Pacific Lines agreed to give the
Rotary club and the city one of
its old steam engines to be
mounted on a vacant tract of
land beside the city's central fire
station.

America Legion Baseball Star
Squad Will Tour Latin America;
16 Players Will Make Journey
and the purpose of this. tour."
Nomination of Players
The 16 players to be selected
for this tour must be nominated
by the respective departments.
Legion Baseball Commissioner
Lou Brissie has set July 20th as
the deadline for nominations.
On or before that date, officials
from each department are asked
to submit the names of one
pitcher, one catcher, one in
fielder and one outfielder.
The players who are to be
nominated must be chosen on
the basis of their scholastic aver
age, citizenship qualities and
playing ability. To be eligible,
they must have played on a Le
gion junior baseball team during
the 1956 season and must have
graduated from high school
prior to July 1 of this year.
The proposed tour has the com
plete backing of the Department
of State, Commander Wagner
said. The state department made
the arrangements with the Latin
American countries.

Dennis Boren probably will
get the nomination of Manager
Eddie Dahack to do the Eagle
Point throwing. Catcher may be
Copeland. The infield possibly
will include Dick Brown, second
base; Jack Barrett, shortstop,
and Richard Osborne, third base.
Outfield will be picked from
among Charles and Gene Eccle
ston, Eddie Peile and Steve
Geary.
The Colts and Eagle Point
each suffered setbacks in RVL
starters last week and each will
be eager for victory.
Game time today is 2 p.m.
Three other RVL games also
are billed. Cave Junction at

Medford Cheney Studs will be
out to continue their 1955 suc
cess over the California team
when they meet Yreka of the
Northern California League here

The non-league encounter will
be the season opener for the
Medford semi-professional base
ball team which" will compete
again in the fast Southern Ore
gon League.
Scores got closer each time
but the Studs won all three of
their tangles with the Yrekans
last year.
Just who Manager Jack Coon

Studs hasn't been revealed as
yet. Some youths from the farm
team, the Cheney Colts could
move up to see some duty. The
Studs are not expected to reach
full strength until just at the

Finish As High in Pv Conference

team, but one that might not win
as many games or finish as high
in Pacific Coast Conference
standings. That, in a single sen
tence, basically tells the story of
what to eicpect from the Beavers
next fall.'
True, the team will be strong
er than the 1955 rags-to-riches
outfit that surprised everyone
with a 2nd place PCC finish. At
most positions, there is more
depth, and it's logical to assume
that the holdover veterans will
be better versed in the balanced
line single-wing attack.
On the other hand, the 1956
schedule is a real toughie one
that sends the Beavers on the
road four times in the first five
games. After opening at Mis
souri, OSC must head for Los
Angeles the next week end to
take on Southern California, the
pre-season Rose Bowl choice.
And a week later, it's Iowa at
Iowa City.
Every PCC Team
All told, Oregon State goes
against every PCC team, in addi
tion to the intersectionals with
Missouri and Iowa. For the first
time in years, it's a 10-game
slate at OSC, with nary a Satur
day off to sooth the wounds:

ful job in his head coaching be
but at OSC last fall. It was the ,
highest finish for any Oregon
State team since 1946, when the
Beavers also took 2nd in the
PCC chase under Lon Stiner. He
took over what generally had.
been regarded as the worst foot

and developed it into 6-3 club
in one year.
