Steve Bilko
Gets Mad,
Hits Homers

"Don't get Ty Cobb mad,"
used to be the fearful watch
word in the American League
and the same might be. applied
today to Steve Bilko, the lar
ruping first baseman of the Los
Angeles who is driving toward
a new PCL home run record.
Big Steve was cruising along
on a streak of five home runs
in five straight games before
yesterday's twin bill with Seat
tle. One homer in that opening
contest would have tied the
mark of six for six recorded by
the Cherubs' Gene Lillard in
1935. But Don Fracchia of the
Rainiers held Bilko hitless, al
though the Angels won 4-3.
Came the nightcap and the
angry slugger smashed two cir
cuit clouts his 17th and 18th
of the year to propel the An
gels to a 5-4 win and a sweep of
the doubleheader.
Mounties Face PCL Leaders
Los Angeles, which meets last
place Vancouver on Tuesday,
moved three games ahead in the
PCL race off yesterday's tri
nmnhi and will meet the futile
Mounties with a six game win
ning streak on the nre.
Bob Anderson, who has been
credited with three of those six
wins, saved the nightcap for Los
Angeles and posted his fifth win
of the vear asainst no defeats.
He has had 23 relief appear
ances.
In other action, San Diego
bounced from sixth place to
fourth by toppling Portland
twirp. 9-2 and 4-2. while Holly
wood and San Francisco divid
ed. The Seals took the opener,
5-4. on Bob DiPietros two run
homer in the ninth frame. Holly
wood won the walkout, b-4.
Kaxak Leads Attack
Eddie, Kazak, who flirted with
fame 10 years ago as third base
man for the St. Louis Cardinals,
was the big man in San Diego's
thumping of Portland. The sharp
featured, soft - spoken veteran
went four for four in the opener
and clubbed a home run in the
process to help pitcher John
Carmichael post his fifth win.
Kazak's fourth home run of
the year in the second game,
coupled with five hit pitching
by Dave Hoskins, helped cinch
the finale.

Seal, Angel PCL
Slates Protested
San Francisco (U.R) The
mid-week day game schedules of
San Francisco and Los Angeles
came under fire at a special
meeting of the Pacific Coast
League directors today.
President Fred Davis of the
Sacramento Solons led a fight to
force the Seals and . Angels to
return to a night game schedule
or agree to revise the present
method of dividing up game
receipts.
David said the present method
of giving the home club 60 per
cent and the visitors 40 per cent
of the net receipts does not give
the latter club enough revenue
when they play before small day
time crowds in Los Angeles and
San Francisco.
David said if he fails in his
move to force the two clubs to
return to night ball, he will pro
pose that the Seals and Angels
retain all their home game re
ceipts on Tuesday, Wednesday
and Thursday and allows the
Solons to do the same when the
clubs are playing in Sacramento
on those days.

Four Persons Killed
As Truck Hits Train
Ravenna, Ohio (U.R) Four
persons were killed and about
15 were injured today when a
truck crashed into a speeding
passenger train, derailing all its
five cars.
The Pennsylvania Railroad
said the four victims were the
driver of the truck, a brakeman
on the train, a passenger and a
man in a building near the tracks
struck by a derailed car.
The railroad said its "Morn
ing Steeler" en route to Cleve
land from Pottsburgh was go
ing through Atwater, 10 miles
south of here, about 70 miles an
hour. A railroad official said the
speed was "normal" for that por
tion of the trip.
The railroad's public relations
office in Cleveland said the truck
struck the rear of the train's
diesel locomotive, derailing it, a
combination mail-express car, a
parlor car and three coach cars.

said last night that barbers will
strive for a standard price of $2
a haircut.
"We must continue for this
goal, and right today the econo
my of the situation dictates that
$1.50 for a haircut is not enough"

Sunday night as the train left
a station here. A safety device
known as the "dead man's
switch," halted the train im
mediately when the engineer's
foot left the controls. None of
the passengers on the crowded
train was aware of. the death.

A six-year-old boy drowned in
an irrigation reservoir near
Turner, Ore., yesterday and the
body of a 47-year-old man was
recovered from Detroit dam res
ervoir. In another week end mis
hap, two persons drowned in the
flooding Columbia river near
Kennewick, Wash., Saturday.
Gerald Mark Hedges drowned
after going wading in the reser
voir about a mile fro his home.

plunged off the North Santiam

rent as they tried to cross a
water - covered highway near
Kennewick. Lee Staker, Rich

Hitchcock Meets
With Eisenhower

Eisenhower discussed Oregon
politics today with Philip S.
Hitchcock, defeated recently by
former Interior Secretary Doug
las McKay for the Oregon Re
publican U.S. senatorial nomina
tion. Hitchcock told reporters that,
as a loyal Republican, he will
back McKay in the November
election. He predicted that Mc
Kay would defeat Sen. Wayne
Morse (D-Ore.)
Hitchcock said he was in the
East to attend a meeting of the
general assembly of the Presby
terian Church of the U.S-A. He
said he was invited to drop by
the White House while he was
in this area.
Asked what he and the presi
dent discussed, Hitchcock said,
"I don't play golf so I just had
a personal chat with him."
Told that there was some
speculation he was under con
sideration for a federal job,
Hitchcok said "nothing was said
about a job except the job of
beating Morse this fall."

Officer Dies in Portland
Portland (U.R) Stuart G.
Dempsie, assistant vice-president
of the First National Bank, died
here yesterday ' at a local hos
pital. Dempsie began his banking ca
reer in Astoria in 1920 as a bank
messenger. He later served at
several upstate banks and in
1948 became manager of the Till
amook branch of the First Na
tional Bank.
Two years ago Dempsie as
sumed the managership of the
uptown branch of the bank in
Portland.

nearly 20 hours and destroyed 12
businesses here before finally
being quelled about noon yester
day. Ketchikan Fire Department of
ficials described the blaze as the
worst fire in the city's history.
They said the fire apparently
started in wiring where elec
tricians had been repairing lines.

OLCC Officers Arrest
15 for Drinking at
Scappoose
Portland U.P.) Fifteen
minors were arrested in an Ore
gon Liquor Control commission
raid on drag races at Scappoose
yesterday afternoon and the ac
tion nearly set off a riot.
OLCC investigators who
entered the park as "paying
customers" arrested 15 youths.
The arrests brought about an
afternoon of tension at the im
provised racetrack for hot rods.
Arrests Protested
The arresting officials were
surrounded by more than 500
persons at the track and were
hard pressed to round up their
prisoners. A commisison spokes
man said five of those arrested
escaped when the crowd press
ed around the police cars, pro
testing the arrests.
Several others who escaped
during the meet were arrested
later on the streets of St. Helens.
Ten were lodged in St. Helens
jail last night.
OLCC investigators said they
were called into the drag race
meet by state police at Scap
poose after reports of drinking
among the teen-age Sunday
afternoon crowds.

Nudes Agree on Terms
London (U.R) The old and
young nudes who pose for Lon
don's artist colony were back on
speaking terms today.
They divided into two equal
ly unclothed camps Sunday in
a dispute over wages but finally
decided to go ahead and accept
a raise of 73 cents an hour.
The older nudes, some of
them as much as 50, opposed the
increase on grounds it would
attract younger girls and cost
them their jobs.

we approached- the track we
could see kids all over the place
sitting on cases of beer and
drinking out in the open.
McCreary, who had only two
officers with him, said "I didn't
know whether we were going
to get out of there in one piece
or not for awhile. It seemed as
if the whole crowd was ganging
up on us."
He added: "All of the drivers
co-operated with us. They have
a 'knights of the road' pact
which binds them to support the
principles we are trying to en
force. Most of our trouble came
from the crowd of young specta

Radioactive Fallout
Salem (U.R) Sensitive in
struments at Willamette Univer
sity Sunday recorded a double
dose of radioactivity, a week
after an H-bomb "shot" in the
Pacific released particles in the
world s wind currents.
Dr. R. L. Purbrick, head of the
Willamette physics department,
said there was at least twice the
normal amount of radioactivity
present, but he emphasized there
was no danger. He said he was
not sure what route the particles
had taken from Bikini island
which is about 5,500 miles from
here.
Purbrick said his geiger count
er recorded 44 counts per minute
late Saturday. His next reading
at noon Sunday was 86 counts
which indicated the fallout had
begun. The count dropped to 76
a half hour later and by 4:30
p.m. was back to a normal 46.
