The Medical Roundup
According to Dr. Morris Sam
itz, who recently , spoke at a
symDosium on industrial med
icine, the so
called indus
trial dermat
itis, or skin
trouble due to
contact with
various chem
icals, is very
common
among work
ers in clothing
waiter Alvarez ana textile in
dustries, where dyes are much
used. Skin lesions are found, of
course, in chemical factories and
rubber factories, and among
workers in fur, leather and sev
eral types of food. It is found
in workers in cement, pottery,
paint-making, lithography, furn
iture-finishing, dish-washing, and
cleaning and dyeing. Among
chemicals that injure the skin,
kerosene and turpentine are bad
actors. Many women have
trouble because of the new de
tergents. The Significance of
Sucking and Nursing
In the last 20 years, certain
psychiatrists have had a wond
erful time spinning all sorts of
sexual and other weird theories
to explain why infants suckle
and nurse. Now comes Dr. W. T.
James, of the University of
Georgia, to say that sucking is
a simple reflex, very strongly
developed in all mammalian in
fant animals. He says that baby
puppies will suckle whenever
they are with the mother. They
will suckle even when their
little stomach is filled with
milk; they will suckle when the
stomach is empty; they will
suckle after they have been
sucking on a bottle, or after
they have been taking food from
a dropper; they will continue
to suck until they fall asleep;
and they will begin again the
minute they wake.
From his studies, he is sure
that small animals suckle just
because they were born with
this strong automatic tendency.
Among marsupials animals in
which the young are born only
partly developed, and then cared
for in a pouch within which are
milk glands there is one strong
instinct, and that is to find a teat
and then cling to it. To ascribe
to these almost brainless little
Blast Fall-Out May
Have Reached Coast
Berkeley, Calif. U.P.)
State Health Department obser
vers here reported Saturday ra
dioactive fall-out from the H
bomb blast at Bikini may have
reached the continental United
States.
The Department said that ra
dioactive readings of air parti
cles, which started on April 23,
jumped up to 7.Vz times the nor
mal background level reading
Friday. The Department said
there was nothing alarming in
the readings because they still
were only in the "high range of
normal."
If the readings continue in
the high normal range for two
or three days, the department
said, it probably was logical to
say that the radioactive dust of
the blast had reached the North
American continent, travelling at
the rate of approximately 40
miles per hour.

Search Luxury Liner
' Nicosia, Cyprus U.R) Brit
ish authorities announced Sat
urday they boarded and search
ed the Greek luxury liner Ag
amemnon Friday in a policy of
searching all "suspect" vessels
that approach Cyprus. '
A British spokesman said that
search orders were issued last
September. Searching the 5,514
ton Greek luxury liner serves
notice the order will be carried
out, he said.- ,
The searches apparently are
intended to prevent gun running
or transporting fugitives of the
anti - British Cypriot under
ground. Nothing was reported
found in the two-hour search of
the Agamemnon. -

bits of flesh all the complicated
sexual ideas that psychiatrists
now thrive on would seem to be
utterly silly.
Dr. James' conclusion is that
human infants also suckle be
cause of a simple instinct or sort

for the process.

Premature Blast
Kills Chicago Man
Chicago (U.R) Authorities
Saturday sought a tall man for
questioning in the death of Clar
ence MichaeJ Campbell, . 58,
whose body was blown- in two
by premature blast of a dyn
amite bomb he was delivering.
Police believed the man, who
was out walking a dog in the
early hours Friday morning,
may have been a witness to the
blast that killed Campbell.
Campbell apparently sought
to duck behind a tree when he
saw the stranger approaching,
police theorized, and tripped
over a wire strung to protect
the grass.' The jar of his fall
apparently touched off the blast.

Historic Material of
Civil War Era Found
Springfield, 111. U.R) Dis

dating back to Abraham Lin
coln and the Civil War era was
reported Sunday.
The collection included about
10,000 pictures, books, scrap
books, diaries, letters and other
material. It was found in the
basement of the Centennial
building where it had been gath
ering dust for 20 years.
The discovery was made by a
blast shattered windows in their
home, said they saw the man
and his dog near a part of
Campbell's body.
The intended bombing was
one of a series that has broken
