Dr. Merkel Discusses
County Health Funds
Dr. A. Erin Merkel, county
health officer, stated Friday that
health department funds are not
adequate to meet county health
problems. He spoke during a
public meeting sponsored by the
county health department.
Dr. Merkel said the budget
Is $88,144 for the present year
or about $1.35 per capita. Of
this, he said, the county levies
$52,477. or $.80 per capita. The
rest of the money Is from state
reimbursement, he said.
Funds meet the barest needs,
Dr. Merkel said. In 1937, he ex
plained, the APHA recommend
ed an expenditure of $2 per
capita as a minimum. At that
time, Merkel added, the county
was spending $1 per capita. He
said with $2 per capita budget
a good job could be done.

Hollywood U.R) One of the
most famous voices In the movies
has come out of retirement to
join, television
and he's no

voice behind

Now viewers can see what the
voice looks like on CBS-TV's
"xelephone Time" on Sunday
evenings. Nesbitt is back with
his same true feature stories
from history, and this time he
shows up on camera to introduce
each tale.
Viewers will notice that his
appearance matches his voice
an elegant, professor-type man
with wavy, graying hair and res
onant vocal chords.
Movie Stories Used
"We're using some of our
movie stories on television, but
most of the TV tales are new,"
aid Nesbitt. "We are hitting
for quality. If a story is long
hair, I popularize it. If it has
emotional appeal, I do it in a
restrained, adult manner."
His plans for the TV show in
clude such historical dramas as
the story of Laura Bridgeman,
the first deaf-mute to take her
place in society. He also plans
to show what actually happened
to Elizabeth Barrett and Robert
Browning after they were mar
ried. They worked as their own
press agents and planted copy
on themselves at the newspapers.
Some weeks he plans to use his
movie technique of narrating the
entire show, with the. story told
in pantomime.
Success Attained Early
Nesbitt is one show business
success who can't complain about
the struggles of the trade. At an
early age he was a hit on the
radio and casually sauntered into
an MGM contract.
"I had the world's lovliest con
tract," he said. "I worked four
months each year at MGM, doing
eight pictures a year for 10
years. They spoiled me rotten."
Nesbitt made so much money
he didn't need any more, so he
retired six years ago to a ranch
near Monterey, Calif., to "raise
cattle and children." Recently
he decided to bring what he calls '
his "dramatic journalism" to tel- j
evision. !
Incidentally, he got those mag-1
nificent tones from shouting '
when he was a boy.
"My father was deaf In one
ear," he said. "If I didn't speak
clearly and use good enunciation
he would shout, 'What are you
mumbling about, son'."
