Visitors Frequent in Area

Shady Cove-Trail For most
local people, the coming of sum
mer also means the entertaining
of old friends and out-of-town
visitors. Recent visitors to Shady
Cove have been Mr. and Mrs.
Les Graffis of Gold Hill, who
were guests of Mr. and Mrs. O.
L. Williams; John Mclver of Ash
land, V,ris., who spent some time
visiting with his daughter and
family, the Martin Gutlands, be
fore going on to Clearwater, Ida.;
Gene Chapman, Pleasonton,
Kan., former Shady Cove resi
dent, who stayed overnight with
Mr: and Mrs. Earl Sheppard;
guests of Mr. and Mrs. Floyd
Kelley have been Mr. and Mrs.
T. X. Jantzer, Mrs. Kelley's
brother and sister-in-law, and
Mr. and Mrs. Frank Peterson, all
of Medford; and Mr. and Mrs.
Vic Kelgesson of Salem who
spent the week end visiting with
the Carroll Watson family.
For others the coming of sum
mer means trips and vacations.
Taking vacations "recently have
been Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Paul
son of Shady Cove who drove to
Cave Junction to visit relatives;
Mrs. Zella Tullis, who 'vacationed
and visited friends at Siltcoos
Lake and Newport, Ore.; and
Mrs. Isabelle Wunderlich and
daughter, Gail, who spent the
week end visiting Mrs. Wunder
lich's son and family, Mr. and
Mrs. Dan Wunderlich of Klamath
Falls. -
A short trip that has proved
attractive to many local people
is the one to Lilac Acres, beauty
spot of several acres of lilacs
and many other flowers, all in
bloom, owned by Ernie Dahack
at Tiller. The comments from
those who have had the oppor
tunity to view the flowers makes
one eager to see them. Mr. and
Mrs. George Pfeifer, Mr. and
Mrs. Glenn Collins, Mrs. Mary
Chapman and Mrs. Desiree Fry
ling made the trip Friday. Da
hack has provided picnic tables
so that people may also enjoy
an outdoor lunch.
Ricky Bergren, son of Mr. and
Mrs. Dave Bergren of Shady
Cove, underwent major surgery
in a Medford hospital but is now
recovered and has returned to
school.
Oscar Hanson of Elk Creek,
Trail fell and broke his foot and
is forced to walk on crutches for
Rhododendron Festival
Scheduled at Florence
Florence (U.R) Tomorrow
starts Rhododendron Days in
this coastal town and officials
predicted that the colorful
blooms will be at their peak for
the celebration.
The pink blooms decorate the
Oregon Coast highway and Flor
ence has prepared a festive four
day celebration.

Mr. and Mrs. O. O. Willson,
Eagle Point residents who for
merly lived at Trail, have moved
back to Oakridge where Willson
is employed. Miss Carol Wilde,
daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Millard
Wilde of Elk Creek, Trail is rent
ing their house in Eagle Point.
Miss Wilde is employed as a
nurse in Medford.
Albert Estin has gone to Alas
ka where he will be employed
during the summer months, re
turning in the fall.
A newcomer to Shady Cove
is Mrs. Mary Chapman of Long
Beach, Calif. Mrs. Chapman has
been here before and bought a
lot from O. L. Williams next to
the Glenn Collins for building
purposes. Now she is back in
Shady Cove and starting to build.
Floating Island
Bothers Residents
Dundee, Wis. '(U.R) Dun
dee's floating island rode safe
ly at anchor today, but high
winds kept residents from tow
ing it away from their front
yard.
The three-acre island, carry
ing four or five large trees, came
visiting from the west shore of
Kettle Moraine Lake.
Residents turned out in motor
boats Tuesday and dragged it
off the beach. They moored it
15 feet from the shore, but a
stiff 30-mile-per hour wind sty
mied further efforts to get rid
of the island.
Further plans to tow the is
land somewhere else were post
poned until Sunday.
The island had floated aim
lessly about the lake for a time
after breaking loose from the
west shore 10 days ago. Wind
and waves eventually pushed it
up on the beach of one of the
resorts which ring the lake.
Resort owners complained
that the wandering Island was
a threat to. their beaches as long
as it was allowed to drift
aground at one point and then
another.
Mother, Son Drown
As Car Leaves Road
Yakima, Wash. (U.R) A
mother and her 11-year-old son
drowned in a gravel pit south
of Sunnyside yesterday after
noon when a truck driven by
the woman's husband plunged
off a road.
The victims were Mrs. Hazel
A. Carmen, 31, and her son, Dan
ny, 11, of Mabton. The father,
John Carmen, managed to save
himself. When the truck was
pulled out of the 20-foot deep pit
the bodies were not inside. They
were recovered later.
Conservation 'experts say
shoot the cocks and save the
hens when pheasant hunting.
Each male pheasant harvested
during the open season leaves
room for a hen to make it suc
cesfully through the next winter.
