Steel Industry
Strike Expected,
Magazine Claims
New York J.R) The odds
now favor a strike in the na
tion's giant steel industry, Iron
Age magazine said today.
The metalworking authority
placed the odds favoring a walk
out at 55-45. It said labor will
have to slash the "outlandishly
high" demands it is expected to
take to the bargaining tables if
a strike is to be avoided.
Iron Age said the key to peace
ful settlement of coming nego
tiations may lie between a 17
cent and 20-cent hourly package
boost for labor.
Would Hit Users Hard
The trade paper estimated a
two-week strike would "hit hard
at more than 50 per cent" of the
nation's steel users. Except for
automotive, steel-using indus
tries are rolling along at a
strong pace," ' the publication
aid.
It noted estimates that freight
car builders alone will need
3,000,000 ingot tons "to make
a dent in order backlogs and
car repair programs."
Meanwhile, Iron Age said,
auto companies have been hold
ing off on new orders for July
and August. They apparently
plan to "live largely off inven
tories until new models go into
production."
It termed the action "a gam
ble that could leave Detroit out
on a limb should new car sales
show a summer upturn."
Stocks 'Fairly Ample'
As for supplies, Iron Age de
scribed stocks of cold-rolled
sheet and strip as "fairly ample"
although othei steel shapes are
"at the least oat of balance." -It
said a current letdown in
cold-rolled sheet consumption
has been a blessing for users
of hot-rolled sheets and light
plate.
"Mills that several months
ago were turning down hot-roll
ed sheet orders are out soliciting
business now" and "some pro
ducers are rolling high plate on
sheet and strip mills,' the au
thority reported.
Scrap prices continue lower
but a battle in Washington over
exports of scrap is looming,
Iron Age said. It described ad
ministration sentiment as still
favoring "relatively free ex
porting." Doctor Wins $32,000
On Television Quiz
New York (U.R) A doc
tor who knows hjs onions, and
other foods won $32,000 on "The
$64,000 Question" television

consomme Parisienne as a clear
soup with leeks and julienne of
various vegetables-, among other
things on a five-part question.
Salvatore, who has four chil
dren, will return to the program
next week to say whether he
will try for the top prize of $64,
000 or keep the money he has
won. '

pilot stationed at Wright-Patterson
Air Force Base, Ohio.,
and wife, Zobbye, will appear on
the program next week to an
swer questions on Sherlock
Holmes. O'Rourke won $8000
Tuesday night, while his wife
won the same amount last week.
fice has received priority for
immediate delivery of the truck.
Moore said the removable tank
feature enables them to use the
truck for other purposes when
it is not actually standing by for
fire suppression work. Al Han
sen, supply officer of the local
office, will be in charge of the
unit for the display.
Curtis Nesheim, district war
den for the Southwest Oregon
district of the state forestry de
partment, announced plans for
cooperation of his office in, his-
play of new equipment and in
demonstrations of slash fire con
trol Forester Doyl Stockton
will be in charge of the displays
of state equipment.
Area Equipment
L. L. (Doc) Simpson, forester
and secretary-manager of the
Southern Oregon Conservation
and Tree Farm association em
phasized that the $500,000 dis
play of equipment represents
only about 50 per cent of the
total amount of fire suppression
gear in southern Oregon.
Equipment not on display will
be on stand-by basis in the woods
or at the various agency head
quarters.
All displays will be open to
the public. Groups participating
include the Jackson County Dis

Scandinavians
Invite Russians
Stockholm, Sweden U.R)
Sweden, Norway and Denmark
have invited Russian leaders to
visit Scandinavia.
Ambassadors of the three na
tions extended the invitations to
Soviet Premier Nikolai Bulganin
and Communist party boss Niki
ta S. Khrushchev in Moscow
Tuesday. -.
The Soviet bosses were urged
to make the visit at a time "con
venient" to them. Sources in
Oslo indicated they probably
will make it next spring. .
The premiers of the three
Scandinavian countries all have
made formal state visits to Mos
cow recently, starting with Nor
wegian Premier. Einar Gerhard
sen last November.
If the Kremlin bosses accept,
and there was every indication
they would, it would be the first
Russian state visit to Sweden
since the czar came to Stock
holm in 1909.
