Stars Blaze Up In PCL;
Beavers Divide Vith Seals
By SCOTT BAILLIE
United Press Sports Writer
The Hollywood Stars, who
always take six weeks to warm
up, were the hottest club in the
Pacific Coast League Monday
while Sacramento was entering
its usual cooling off period after
an early-season spurt. ,
A crowd of 10,224 watched in
the Stars' Gilmore Field Sunday
as they swept a double header
from Los Angeles, 4-1 and 3-0.
to leave their cross-town rivals
hanging on in first place by five
percentage points.
Runner-up Seattle had a big
chance to zoom into the lead
but missed out by blowing its
nightcap to cellar-bound Van
couver, 8-3, after winning the
opener, 6-1, on Bud Podbielan's
five-hitter.
Sacramento, which hadn't
been lower than third since May
1, lost two games to San Diego,
10-5 and 3-0, but remained in
third spot by a game and a half
over the souped up Pads,
Beavers. Seals Split
Portland and San Francisco
split their twin bill. The Seals
won the opener 12-6, and the
Beavers took the nightcap 2-1
Bill Lillard
ABC Winner
Rochester, N.Y. 4J.R) Bill
Lillard of Chicago was officially
crowned the first "triple crown"
champion of the American Bowl
ing Congress tournament today
at., the close of the 79-day pin
busting carnival.
Lillard swept nearly all the
honors as he won the all-events
title with a score of 2,018, team
ed with Stan Gifford to win
the doubles championship with
a 1,331 score, and led the Fal
staff Beer team of Chicago to
the team crown with a 3,093
score.
George Wade of Steubenville,
Ohio, won the one big prize that
escaped Lillard the singles
championship with a score of
744.
Lingscheit
Adds Touch
A la Landy
Les Lingscheit, Medford half
miler added a "John Landy"
touch to the Oregon state Class
A-l track and field meet at Cor
vallis, his coach, Bob Newland,
reported.
Lingscheit, who did not work
out all last week because of a
pulled achilles tendon, was one
of the leaders until the back-
stretch of the final lap. When
he realized he was beginning to
"fade," according to Newland,
he turned his head to teammate
Bilbee Lane, who was still be
hind him and shouted, "Lane
move up." Lane, 16-year-old
sophomore, responded. He1 went
on to win the race.
Although the handicapped
Lingscheit failed to place, New-
land credited him with running
a "tremendous race.
Newland did not see the fin
Ish of the half-mile. Lane had
bumped a runner when the thin-
clads were bunched early in the
race, and, had not the coach
had some words with the judge,
the sophomore might have been
disqualified. The jostling did not
hamper the other runner but
Lane "got an elbow" from him.
Slory Fires Tornado
The Medford mentor gave
some credit to a Portland Ore-
gonian story for sparking up the
Black Tornado for its Saturday
afternoon victory, its fourth
straight in a state meet. The
story declared that Medford had
faltered and that its stock had
dropped Friday when the relay
team was ''isqualified and El-
don Francis failed to qualify
for the javelin.
Tornado runners, jumpers and
throwers didn't appreciate what
they read. They went out and
showed that they were still the
state champions.
Lew Breazeale ripped hide off
his hand clearing 11 feet 6 in
ches for Medford in the pole
vault Saturday and was hamper
" ed in his further attempts to
clear the cross bar.
Fine Point
- Medford's relay disqualifica
tion Friday was on a fine point.
Pete Kershaw had just the
front part of his foot out of the
exchange zone when he took
the baton from Wally Larson
to begin the second leg of the
relay. His heel was still in the
zone. Kershaw stopped still to
take the pass from the Tornado
lead-off man. Still Medford's re
lay time was the best of the
meet.
Grants Pass should be put
UOWU as iuuiui lit uic aiaic meet
Saturday. The Cavemen had 33
points, no 23 as an addition slip
up indicated Sunday.
Crater high was seventh in
Class A-2 with 16 3-7 points.
Even though the Stars take a
five game winning streak up to
Portland on Tuesday, they re
main mired in seventh place
thanks to their horrible early
season start.
However, they looked like the
goods Sunday. In the first game
the Stars broke a 1-1 tie in the
sixth inning with a two-run rally
and Paul Pettit singled home
another run in the eighth to in
sure pitcher Curt Raydon his
fourth win of the year. Raydon
went the distance.
Pettit drove in all of Holly
wood's three runs in the night
cap with a bases loaded double
in the fourth inning and veteran
Ben Wade stifled the Cherubs
with a three-hitter to post his
fourth triumph.
San Francisco and Portland
remained fifth and sixth xe-
spectively by taking turns beat
ing each other. Haywood Sulli
van drove in a total of five runs
for the Seals with a pair of
homers in the first game during
a 12-6 rout.
Bob Alexander bottled the
Seals up with a two hitter in
the .nightcap, one of the blows
being a bases empty homer by
Tom Umphlett. He also homered
in the first game..

Soil Bank Versions
Sent to Conference
Washington (U.R) The
House today sent differing ver
sions of new soil bank farm leg
islation to a Senate-House con
ference to work out a compro
mise.
Rep. W. R. Poage (D-Tex.) said
negotiations will start later to
day. He hopes an agreement can
be reached in time for final Sen
ate and House action on a com
promise bill Tuesday.
House GOP Leader Joseph W.
Marin Jr., had suggested that
the House simply accept the Sen
ate version. He noted that ad
ministration leaders have indi
cated the Senate bill would be
acceptable to President Eisen
hower. But Poage said the Senate had
made so many changes that a
conference was mandatory. He
had complained to reporters
earlier that the Senate measure
ultimately would create even
bigger grain surpluses and that
it would result in "depressed
prices" for cattle, hogs, chickens
and eggs.
