Letter Arrives Nine
Years After Mailing
Prett, Kan (U.R) A letter
mailed to Mrs. Sam Stearman on
'.July 28, 1936, reached here re
cently.
For nine years the missive ei
ther travelled about the country
or lay in some undetermined
place. Ten years ago it was de
livered to Mrs. Stearman's
grandmother in Center, Tex. She
placed it in a trunk.
There it lay until after her
death Those going through her
effects found it, still sealed, and
sent it on to Mrs. Stearman, wife
of a minister here.

Bright' Disease: What To Do
Many persons ask what they
can do for diseased kidneys, or
so-called Bripht's disease. I caiv
not say be
cause there
are several
types of kid
ney disease.
One type
comes in later
years, due
largely to
hardening o f
the arteries.

which starts usually in child
hood, commonly follows an at
tack of scarlet fever. This is an
acute nephritis which may end
up as a chronic interstitial neph
ritis, interstitial meaning "that
the inflammation is largely in
the interstices (or spaces)' be
tween the tiny tubules in which
the urine is formed. Another
type of nephritis is called glome
rular, because in this type the
injury is mainly in the glome
ruli or little tufts made up of
capillaries. In these tufts the
urine is separated from the
blood.
Children get another type of
kidney trouble called nephrosis.
These children become dropsical
and swollen, sometimes from
their face to their feet. Unfor
tunately, the cause of this dis
ease is not well understood and,
as a result, the treatment is often
unsatisfactory. But gradually ex
perts are learning how to pro
long the life of the affected
child.
Another type of kidney dis
ease, called pyelonephritis, be
gins often with an inflammation
in the so-called pelvis of the
kidney, in which the urine gath
ers before it goes aown tne
ureter into the bladder.
Become Frightened
When I was a young physician,
Bright's disease was supposed to
be fatal disease, and anyone who
was told that he had a little albu
min in his urine became mucn
frightened. Usually, in those
days, an insurance company re
fused to 'accept him as a risk.
Today, we physicians know that
there are all grades and types of
kidney disease and that many a
man with a little albumin in his
urine is not in any great dangers
It may mean only that he has
an old scar in his kidney, a scar
that will never bother him much
or endanger his life. Today, with
the help of tests of kidney func
tion, the physician may be able
to say to the patient, "You have
kidneys that are functioning so
well that we do not need to
worry about them. Most of your
kidney tissue is in good condi
tion." When the Good Lord designed
man, he did much as an engineer
does when he is building a sky
scraper. He takes into account a
factor of safety; in other words,
he makes the building so strong
that, if need be some day, several
more stories could be added on
top. He designs it, also, so that
an earthquake or a tornado will
not throw it down.
Stones Often Mysterious
As a factor of safety, we men
and women have two kidneys,
although we could get along
with only half of one. Similarly,
one can remove surgically six
sevenths of a dog's liver without
harming him.
Some persons lose a kidney
because a large kidney stone
forms in it. Just why stones
form, we do not always know.
Oftentimes, if a person has no
symptoms from such a kidney
stone, the urologist leaves it
alone. He knows that if he takes
it out, the kidney will not be
able to start functioning again.
Why? Because once a good kid
ney has had to enlarge and take
over the work of a diseased -kidney,
it will never step down and
give the extra burden back to
the kidney that failed in its
work.
When I was a boy, people had
the idea that backache was com
monly a sign of kidney disease
Today, we physicians seldom
think of kidney disease when a
patient comes with a backache.
Nearly all of the backaches are
due to some arthritis of the
spine, or some fibrositis in the
muscles around the spine, or per
haps some undue strain in these
muscles. Some of the worst of

the low backaches are due to
what is called a displaced inter
vertebral disc, which is press
ing on nerves. In these cases,
usually the pain runs down the
sciatic nerves in the back of the
thigh. Then the patient is likely
to walk listed over to one side;
he may have to use a cane or he
may even have to take to a
wheel-chair.
Does Different Things
Some persons are asking, "But
what do you do for kidney trou
ble?" Obviously, one does differ
ent things, depending on what
type of kidney trouble one has,
and how much discomfort it is
producing. For instance; there is
one type of kidney trouble that
is associated with a diabetes that
has been poorly treated. In such
case, one would try to get the
patient to behave himself better,
and not to go on a candy-eating
bender every so often. In many
cases in which albumin is found
in the urine, the physician will
not order any treatment. Com
monly, the patient thinks he
ought to follow the old-fashioned
idea and stop eating meat. Ac
tually as Dr. Thomas Addis
showed years ago, some of the
children with nephrosis were
losing in their urine each day
much more albumin than they
were getting in their food. As a
result of this, their dropsy got
worse and worse. Dr. Addis gave
them plenty of meat, and they
immediately got much better.
This was logical.
Today, when a little albumin
is found in their urine, some per
sons feel that they must stop us
ing table salt. They are wrong;
