Garden Club
Plans Show
In Phoenix
Phoeni x Phoenix Garden
club will hold the Annual flower
show at the Phoenix Community
club building Sunday, May 20,
from 1 to 9 p.m.
Many exhibits of flowers and
arrangements will be displayed,
the committee states. Special
projects will be a display by the
4-H club. Junior Garden club,
and neighboring garden clubs. A
silver tea, plant sale and a cookie
sale are planned.'
At 3 p.m., a program will be
given. John Lusk of the Lusk
Piano company will play solos on
a Baldwin spinet organ. Mrs.
Ruth Walden of the Walden floral
shop will talk on and display
correct corsages for the various
types of clothing to be modeled
in a show to be given by Had
ley'a Dress shop.
Instrumental numbers will be
given by the misses Joyce Hun
ter and Joyce Stockstill of Phoe
nix and vocal numbers will be
given by Mrs. R. B. Harrison,
also of Phoenix.
The public is cordially invited

May 19. The program will be
held in the concert hall of the
Church of Latter Day Saints at
8 o'clock.

Mrs. Tom Popham, both Med

In addition to traditional re
cital numbers . the. group will
present some scenes from operas
and for the first time, one scene
will be done in costume, Mrs.
Werner states. This will be the
card scene from "Carmen." Ap
pearing in this will be Mrs.
Popham, Mrs. Matlack and Miss
Lester.
Also appearing in operatic
selections will be Mrs. DeVoss,
Mrs. Reed, Mr. Wason, Miss
Knowles and Mrs. Bresee.
Anyone interested in music is
invited by Mrs. Werner to
attend.

Governor Visits
Medford Zontians
Mrs. Ellen Harris of Vancou
ver B.C., governor of district
VIII of Zonta International, met
with the. members of the Med
ford club Monday evening at the
home of Mrs. Jacque Lenox. Mrs.
Harris discussed with the vari
ous chairman the activities and
duties of the standing commit
tees. She stated that in District
VIII, $11,000 had been raised
this year for service.
Mrs. Effie Kurtz, Medford
president, announced that . Mrs.
Harris has just been nominated
as second vice-president for Zon
tan International. .
Officers of the Medford club
for 1956-57 were elected Mon
day night. Mrs. Jean Fish will
be president; Mrs. Violet Anders,
first vice-president; Mrs. Dor
othy Ginn, second vice-president;
Mrs. Eloise Winkelbleck, secre
tary and Mrs. Celia Martin treas
urer. Miss Josephine Kirtley was
elected delegate to the Interna
tional convention in Sun Valley,
Ida., in June. Mrs. Florene Bol
ton will -serve as alternate dele
gate, Mrs. Violet Anders will be
a convention hostess and Mrs.
Irean Grigsby is to be in charge
of the information booth.

YMCA To Hold
Smorgasbord
Saturday Night
Flavors from many different
lands will feature the YMCA
smorgasbord being planned for
Saturday, May 19. Serving time
from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. will find
Mrs. Alex Tummers and her Y
international cookery class busy
keeping the smorgasbord table
filled with every kind of food,
from savory meats and fish to
vegetables and refreshing sal
ads, according to Mrs. John
Mansfield, general chairman.
Planned in conjunction with
the annual YMCA spring auc
tion, the dinner will be the re
sult of weeks of menu devel
oping, the recipes coming from
Mrs. Tummers' collection. :
Mrs. Tummers, recently rec
ognized for her culinary artistry
in the Oregon Food and Bever
age magazine will take charge
of all the food preparation and
display together with Mrs. James
Moerder. These women will be
aided by Mrs. Steve Benson,
Mrs. Barbara Gordon, Mrs. Tom
Shearin, Mrs. Fred Spiegelberg,
Mrs. M. W. Taylor, Mrs. I. M.
Eitrem, Mrs. Milo Kubalek, Mrs.
John Ousterhout, Mrs. Donald
Collins, and Mrs. E. M. Whini
han. Ticket distribution is in charge
of Mrs. Jim Winslow, and Mrs.
Fred Baggenstos, and tickets are
on sale at Acme hardware, Home
Appliance, Swem's, Penney's,
Burlesons, Purucker's Piano
House, Hight's Realty, O. K.
Market, and the YMCA office.

Mrs. Lorraine Evensen, vocal
music supervisor of city schools,
explained methods of teaching
music to children and presented
several groups of students to
demonstrate the different grade
levels. Mrs. Frances Weaver led
her first grade group in two
songs; Mrs. Lucille Hulburt, the
third gradej. Mrs. Marjorie
Blaar, the fifth grade; Ray Lew
is, a seventh grade group from
McLoughlin Junior high, and Al
lan Lehl, a senior high school
group.
Mrs. Nick DeWitt gave a brief
report on the convention of the
Oregon Congress and Parents
and Teachers held . in Portland
recently. She attended as a dele
gate. During the business meeting
Mrs. Lesseg commented briefly
on the theme "Enjoy Your PTA
through Participation" which
was used through the year in
planning programs. She thank
ed the executive board and as
sociation for their active partic
ipation. , .
It was announced an auditing
committee had been appointed
consisting of Mrs. Adlfinger and
Mrs. Robert Little.
Mrs. Adlfinger was presented
the president's pin and gavel.
Prior to closing the meeting,
Mrs. Adlfinger presented a past
president's pin to Mrs. Lesseg
and announced appointment of
Delegates to Medford Council
of PTA. These will be Mrs. Joe
Wittenberger and Mrs. Wayne
Wright.
Room count was won by Jack
Holmes in the upper grades and
Mrs. Frances Weaver In the low
er grades.
Hostesses for the afternoon
were mothers of pupils in the
sixth grade.
