father, she must have guessed the
reason and it must have been a
terrible blow to her.
My father did not limit him
self to reason and persuasion.
He held over my head the fact
that he was' providing for my
future and that he would do no
thing for me if I crossed his
wishes. I knew that I could not
support a wife, let alone a sick
one, without help and I there
fore had to obey his orders.
. Assuming that Martha would
now be dead if we had married,
I fail to understarfd why we
conJd not have enjoyed hap
piness for as long as it was pos
sible. I feel as though a crime
was committed and I cannot for
give my father the fact that he
compelled me to agree to that
crime.

ly. His bitterness has not been
earned by his father, but is the
product of his tortured con
science. '
Why did Allen, if he loved
Martha dearly, abandon her to
the point where she had to
"guess" the reason he was not
seeing her any longer? It would
have been much kinder if he had
told her the truth about his fath
er s position and had continued
seeing her and giving her his
companionship. Martha would
not have been crushed by the
truth, because she knew of her
condition and probably did not
want to marry. But she should
have had the steadfast friend
ship of the man who professed to
love her, and this Allen denied
her because he was incapable of
loving her without possessing
Tier.'
Allen's father had every right
and duty to oppose such a mar
riage, and he should not now be
blamed in bitterness for Allen's

Monte Carlo, Symbol of
Wealth, Has Money Pinch
Washington Financial re
verses that sometimes beset the
largest nations can also pinch
Monaco, the second smallest,
where Monte Carlo traditionally
symbolizes flowing wealth.
Ordinarily, financial affairs
tie easily together in the 370-acre
state on the blue Ligurain Sea
by the French Riviera. Larger
only than the Vatican City
among the world's nations, Mon
aco functions on tobacco taxes,
postage stamp sales, and fees
from Monte Carlo's casino and
its gambling concession.
But this year there was a run
on the pocket principality s big
gest bank. Hurried government
assistance failed to save the
Monte' Carlo Banking and Pre-
ious Metals Society. It shut its
doors, and with it fell four cab
inet ministers.
No Gambling, Mo Income Tax
Monte Carlo's ornate salons of
chance by law may not be pa-
tronized by citizens of Monaco.
Numbering only 2,000 in a cos
mopolitan population of 23,000,
they may work in Mone Carlo's
gambling rooms, hotels and re
sorts, but they are not permitted
to gamble. In return, Monacans
pay no income tax.
Monaco as a vacation spot is
world renowned for its setting
near the sun-drenched foothills
of the Maritime Alps, dotted by
pastel-hued villas. Sports lure
$75,000 Damage Suit
Filed in Court Here
A complaint asking $75,000
general damages and undeter
mined special damages has been
filed in circuit court against the
Medford Corporation by Joseph
C. Ayoutt, Portland truck
driver.
In the complaint, Ayoutt
states that on May 4, 1956, a
diesel railroad engine . struck
the unloaded log truck-he was
driving at a Medford Corpora
tion crossing on route 2 near
Central Point. The accident, the
complaint says, resulted in mul
tiple bodily injuries to the plain
tiff and extensive damage to the
truck.
Ayoutt charges that the Med
ford Corporation was negligent
in failing to provide a crossing
sign, failing to ring the warning
bell or sound a whistle as the
train approached the crossing,
failing to keep proper lookout
and failing to stop the train be
fore it struck his trucks
Special damages, the com
plaint said, will be established
before the trial .takes place.

Instead of Jail Term

30 youths caught throwing eggs,
tomatoes and heads of lettuce at
each other in a gang battle were
given their choice of going , to
jail or cleaning up the mess.
They chose the cleanup job
and police supervised.
Kidd Pleads Innocent
In Use of Automobiles
Salem U.W Richard R.
Kidd, confessed Portland fire
bug, yesterday pleaded innocent
to charges of unauthorized use
of automobiles.
The charges against Kidd stem
from an escape from the state
hospital he made early this
year. He was later apprehend
ed in the eastern Dart of the
state and allegedly used the
ears on his flight from the state
hospital.

fishes with glowing lamps, pig
snouts and clown masks enliven
the displays.
The principality boasts of
many beautiful gardens, includ
ing the Exotic Garden which
startlingly overhangs the Tete
de Chien slopes. There visitors
see luxurious tropical vegetation.
The Casino Gardens in the cen
ter of Monte Carlo flaunt varie
ties or rare trees and towering
palms. Stately pines and tropical
vegetation adorn Saint Martin
Garden. Traditional folklore fes
tivals are held among the thousand-year-old
olive trees of Prin
cess Antoinette Park. .
Ancient Customs Honored
Amid its gay and quiet scenes,
Monaco clings to ancestral cus
toms. Each January a ceremony
honors Saint Devote, patron
Saint of the reigning dynasty, On
each Good Friday a reverent
procession wends through Monaco-Ville
streets under lights "re
flecting a medieval atmosphere.
Bright suggestions of light
opera scenes warm Monaco's by
ways. The palace of 32-year-old
Prince Rainier crowns the site
of a 13th century Saracen.
Brightly-cressed militia stand
guard at red and white sentry

Medford Woman Hurt
When Hit by Car
Martha Beda McBee, 85, 401
East 12th st., suffered a broken
nose and bruises Monday when
she was struck by a car operated
by Richard Lee Schleigh, Route
3, box 213, Medford, at South
Riverside st. between Ninth st
and 12th St., according to Med
ford police.
She was taken to Community
hospital, police said. No citations
were issued.

school student visitors, this year.
The half million youngsters who
annually pour into the capital
will see her at work too.
Officials in major- govern
ment agencies and congressmen
have lauded the plan, devised
by the Greater National Capital
Committee, that will give fu
ture leaders an inside glance at
federal operations.
Under' the program,, the visi
tors' bureau said, each of 10 top
departments will describe, to the
teen-agers what it does and how
it fits into the over-all scheme
of the government. At the Capi
tol the youngsters will - learn
how congress works how bills
are introduced, considered and
acted upon. '
Higher-ups in the departments
involved have strongly endorsed
the plan.

joined the prisoners in Cook
county jail s death row Tuesday.
He flew through a window
into the cell block housing 10
condemned men and perched on
the shoulder of Vincent Ciueei,'
convicted killer of his wife and
children.
The men awaiting death were
convinced the blue parakeet
would bring - them, good luek
when, a short time later, stays
of execution were granted to
two men scheduled to die this
week-end.
