yesterday that House and Senate
subcommittees are completing a
report on an investigation of the
Al Sarena mining claim case in
Oregon.
The subcommittees held hear
ings earlier this year on charges
that minerals on a dozen claims
granted to the Al Sarena mining
company were not sufficient to
Justify the grants.
Neuberger said he made the
statement because Douglas Mc
Kay, former interior secretary
who is a candidate for nomina
tion for senator in the Oregon
primary, has said "repeatedly"
no report would be made.
The report has been in prepa
ration for six weeks, Neuberger
said, and should be completed
about June 1. Any further de
lay, he said, would be for prepa
ration of a minority report.

Variants of Epilepsy
Good, kindly people who
either have epilepsy in the fam
ily or have it themselves write
begging
me not to say
that a ten
dency to the
d i s ease often
shows up in
other members
of the family
in some one of
several curious
ways. My cor-
waiif-i Ajvari-z res ponaems
feel that I do the epileptics of
America a disservice by men
tioning these facts. I cannot
agree with them. I agree with
the many epileptics and parents
of epileptic children who write
begging me to give them more
information about the disease
and how it is likely to be in
herited. Naturally, parents who
have epilepsy, or who know that
it runs in the' family, worry
about their children. They won
der if, later, these children can
marry and have children with
out too much danger to the de
scendants. It is unfortunate that the older
students of epilepsy seemed to
have been interested only in
finding out how many of the
children of epileptics have con
vulsions. It did not seem to oc
cur to them to keep records of
the health of all of the many
descendants of epileptics, includ
ing those who never had a fit.
Then they would have known
that some have petit mal (mo
mentary unconscious spells) or
perhaps curious "psychomotor
spells" (when the person chews
or smacks his lips or performs
curious acts and won't talk), or
terrible temper, or occasionally
bit of depression, or horrible
nightmares, or strange fears, or
tendency to drink, or perhaps
one of the many minor equiv
alents of epilepsy. Many descend
ants of epileptics are what the
geneticists call carriers of the
disease. They have no spells but
they carry the disease latent so
that they can pass it on to their
children or grandchildren.

ally give birth to a throw-back

thing happens in human families,
as we all know. Often the doctor
will suspect that a man is a car
rier of epilepsy when he has a
terrible temper. One can be the
surer of this when one finds in
his electroencephalograms (rec
ords of tiny currents arising in
the brain) abnormal waves of the
type . that are characteristic of
epilepsy. His children may also
never have a fit but some may
be violent, unsocial, alcoholic,
or, at times depressed. Some of
them may have an abnormal
electroencephalogram.

Eureka (U.R) The 41-foot
salmon trawler Thornwald was
rammed and sunk by the Liberty-type
freighter Flomar in a
dense fog near here today in the
second marine collision off the
California coast in two days.
The Coast Guard reported
that the skipper of the trawler,
who was alone aboard the boat.
had been rescued by the
freighter.
