Waiters or waitresses? The
claim has been made that wait
resses are superior as to service.
To this a California restaurant
man of long experience takes
strong exception. He favors the
waiters. He adds that on a recent
visit to New York the best serv
ice he received was from a wait
er at Lindy's on Broadway and
the worst from a waitress in the
coffee shop of a world famous
hotel.

"The statement that there
were only five royal families of
Ireland is erroneous," writes a
New Yorker named Carroll.

that church is said to have a

Puzzling Smile
What was the inspiration and
meaning of Mona Lisa's enig
matic smile in the Leonardo da
Vinci painting? That question
has been discussed for centuries
with no general agreement as to
the answer. The most depressing
view of the matter is that taken
by an Irish art critic who
claimed the puzzling Mona Lisa
smile was the result of Da Vinci's
model having a badly fitting
pair of false teeth.

Britain May Delay
Atomic Device Test
Onslow, West Australia (U.R)
Weathermen tracked a coastal
storm today to determine wheth
er British scientists will have to
delay testing the most powerful
atomic device they have produc
ed. Huddled over charts aboard
the flagship of the Royal Navy's
atomic task force off the Monte
bello islands, they were concern
ed about a low pressure area
off West Australia.
The test is planned for tomor
row morning. Official state
ments have said it would be
"small and unspectacular." But
evidence indicated the blast
would be far more powerful
than the 1952 test at Montebel
lo. .
The oil fields of North Dakota,
only four years old, have already
contributed more than 13,000,000
barrels of oil.
The giant anteater of Central
and tropical South America has
a tongue about two feet long.

He's No Sir Winston Churchill

Eden has

on all sorts of issues, however,
since he took Churchill's place
on April 6, 1955.
Domestic issues, British com
monwealth issues, foreign is
sues, have succeeded each other.
Influential Conservatives have
joined the Labor Party opposi
tion in blaming Eden for every
thing which goes wrong or
threatens to go wrong.
The chief complaint against
him in his own party as well as
in the Labor Party, is that his
leadership is weak. He lacks
Churchill's masterly grip, his
critics say.
That can hardly be disputed.
But where is another Churchill
to be found, in Britain or any
other country?
Eden Takes Blame
Take the frogman incident.
Eden did not know that frogman

In fact, Eden probably had
heard only vaguely, if at all,
that such a man as frogman

But Eden takes the blame for
the snooping, for refusing to
tell the full story of it to the
House of Commons and especi
ally, for telling Russia more
than he did Commons when he
replied to a Soviet protest.
One reason for it all is that
Eden inherited from Churchill
a plague of troublesome prob
lems, in which a drift toward
inflation is one of the biggest.
Another is that Eden lacks
Churchill's warm, dominant per
sonality. Undoubtedly, when
Churchill was prime minister,
more people hated him than
hate Eden now. But not so many
like Eden very much.
Then, there is the British po
litical system itself. When any
thing goes wrong in Washing
ton, say, Secretary of State John
Foster Dulles, Secretary of De
fense Charles K Wilson or Sec
retary of Agriculture Ezra Taft
Benson may take the blame, or
be given it.
More Lumps Coming
In Britain, the prime minister
takes the rap. Eden is taking it
now over the frogman incident.
That was an Admiralty or Secret
Service matter. He will take it
more and more in coming weeks
over the Cyprus crisis, or over
the budget in which Chancellor
of Exchequer Harold Macmillan
provided for a government bond
lottery to encourage savings.

superintendent" plunged 150
feet to his death yesterday when
the rail on which he was lean
ing collapsed.
Hubert L. Hinton, 45, was
watching construction of a new
filtration plant when the rail
gave way and he fell into an excavation.
Thornton Cites
Pelton Action
Salem (U.R Attorney Gen
eral Robert Y. Thornton said to
day that criminal proceedings by
the Jefferson couuty district at
torney would be the appropriate
action if allegations that Port
land General Electric Company
was building Pelton dam should
prove true.
Thornton's opinion came in
answer to Gov. Elmo Smith's
question as to what legal action
could be taken.
The attorney general said that
PGE would be in violation of
Oregon water law in construct
ing the Deschutes river dam
without a state license.
"In view of the fact that the
legislative assembly expressly
made certain acts of persons in
the appropriation of water a
crime, I directed the district at
torney of Jefferson county to
make an investigation on certain
alleged facts that if such facts be
found true to institute the neces
s a r y criminal proceedings,"
Thornton told the governor.

Eden is the chief of govern
ment, not like President Eisen
hower the chief of state. Queen
Elizabeth is chief of state. And
under the British system she
can do no wrong. That is not
because Britons regard their
sovereign as sacrosanct. It is
because the sovereign is kept
above and strictly out of
politics. He or she acts by advice
of the prime minister.
So Eden, partly because he
is not another Churchill, is tak
ing his lumps. But he is actually
a man of strong character, and
a fighter.
He also has a majority of 59
