Hanby school at Gold Hill.
The meeting was called to or
der by Vice President Jan New
land. Charlotte Dillon led the
flag salute, and the 4-H pledge
was led by Judith Force. Roll
call was answered by members
naming their favorite color.
It was decided to have Mrs. Al
Beman send invitations to moth
ers to attend our next meeting
as a visiting day. The meeting
was then turned over to leader

Now Be Cured
Always in the past, if a per
son got hydrophobia following
the bite of an animal he
was doomed;
,he died with
great suffer1-
ing. I was re
cently reading
in Time that
in the Near
East one night
a rabid wolf
came into a
village and
bit 29 persons.
In the case of a boy, a tooth of
the wolf went through his thin
skull and into his brain. In the
past, such a wound would have
made the situation absolutely
hopeless. Actually, little Golam
had his meningitis cured by peni
cillin, and then his rabies was
cured by a new serum. Of 13
Dersons who eot this serum plus
the old Pasteur vaccine, only
one died, and he had had only
a single shot of the serum. We
now know that in the worst cases
of rabies, the new serum can
be life-saving. The old vaccine
does not eive good protection
until the 19th day, and this may
be too late. By this time the
deadly virus may have reached

Plans Work Night
To Finish Interior
Wes Coleman, vice-president
of the Jackson County Disaster
Car, issued a call for volunteer
help in completing cabinet work
on the disaster car unit.
Interior work must be com
pleted to allow for installation
of purchased equipment, Cole
man said Wednesday, May 16, at
7:30 p.m. has been set as a work
meeting. The meeting will be
held at the West Side Fire sta
tion and those interested fn help
ing may telephone Coleman at
Medford 2-5367, he said.
Fire-Ama Display
At a recent meeting, Russ Jam
ison, publicity captain, announc
ed that arrangements are being
made to have the Disaster Car at
the Fire-Ama, May 26, on a
standby basis and open to the
public for inspection.
Volunteer members of the
crew will demonstrate use of the
emergency equipment which has
been donated for use in disaster
work, Coleman said.
During the Fire-Ama Lewis
Simpson, secretary-manager of
the Southern Oregon Conserva
tion and Tree Farm association,
and William DuHaime, presi
dent of the Medford Active club,
will make a presentation of
emergency radio equipment
made available to the Disaster
Car through the cooperation of
the two groups.

Harmless to Man
At a recent meeting of the
American Association for the
Advancement of Science, Drs.
W. L. Hayes, Jr., W. F. Durham,
and C. Cueto, Jr., of the U.S.
Public Health Service of Sa
vannah, reported that each day
for a year, 14 men volunteers
had taken DDT in order to see
if it would do harm. Some of
them had eaten every day 200
times the amount that an aver
age person is likely ever to get
in his diet from residues left
on fruits; and vegetables that
had been sprayed with the insect-killer.
Apparently, the stuff
was harmless because none of
the volunteers developed any
symptoms.
The Hoxey Cancer Treatment
In the newsprints I read that
George P. Larrick, Commission
er of Food and Drugs for the
U.S. Government, has issued a
warning to the press, physicians,
schools, consumers and other in
terested groups, saying that the
Hoxey treatment for internal
cancer is worthless; that it rep
resents a gross deception of the
patient, and it can be dangerous
if it is used by persons who could
still have their cancer cured by
surgery, x-rays, radium,- or some
other treatment.
In a recent issue of Life are
pictures of Food and Drug Com
missioner Larrick and of Harry
Hoxey. According to this article,
the patients pay up to $460 for
their treatment. Some 8,000 suf
ferers go every year, and from
them Hoxey is said to gross
$1,500,000.
The Federal Drug Administra
tion some time ago forbade
Hoxey to ship his medicine
across state lines, because analy
sis had shown that it consisted
of potassium iodide and cascara
sagrada, two ancient drugs not

did not bother Hoxey who went
on shipping his medicine. Now
there is a Hoxey Clinic in Port
age, Pennsylvania, which, ac
cording to the article, has gross
ed 5241,000 in its first year.
As I have often said, if I had
ever wanted much money, with
out regard for how I got it or
what my friends thought of me,
I would long since have adver
tised that I could cure cancer.
Within s few years I could
doubtless have been a million
aire. Why? Because there are
so many desperate people who,
when they find that no good
physician will offer them any
hope, will go to anyone who
says he can and will work a
cure. Of course, the guarantee
is of no value because, in my
50 years of practice, I never
heard of anyone getting his
money back from an advertising
doctor.
It should cheer many persons
who now feel that too little is
being done in research for can
cer to know that Surgeon-General
Leonard A. Scheele, of the
U.S. Public -Health Service has
just announced that, beginning
July 1st, contracts will be let to
prepare for the testing of 2.000
chemicals which may possibly
have value in the treatment of
cancer. These tests will be made
on strains of mice which carry
cancer. - ;
This should be an answer to
all those dozens of persons who
recently wrote me rather an
grily or sadly, claiming that we
physicians are not interested in
testing cures for cancer, and
that the only worthwhile work
being done on cancer today is
being done by cruel and mer
cenary quacks, who keep their
so-called remedy secret. If a phy
