Mr. and Mr. Percy Fry of Melbourne,
Australia, were guests in Medford last week
end of Mr. Frye's brother and sister-in-law,
Mr. and Mrs. Harold Frye. 803 West Second
street. Percy Frye is a factory manager for A.
G. Healing, Melbourne, and Harold Frye, Med
ford business man, is a long-time member of

To Be Honored
The annual president's dinner
of American Association of Uni
versity Women will be held
Wednesday, May 16, at 6:30 p.m.,
In Girls Community club. The
program will honor the present
president, Mrs. Emerson Ander
son, who will complete her term
of office at that meeting. Instal
lation of new officers will be
conducted, the 1956-57 president
elect being Mrs. Thomas R.
Eslinger.
.The dinner will be a potluck

High school last night. Miss
Walker is a daughter of Dr. and
Mrs. L. Paul Walker, 408 South
Oakdale avenue.

student , body , president, who
served as her escort for the cor
onation program incltrding the
grand march.

and Miss Pauline Bliss, seniors;
Miss Jan Schliep, Miss Sally
Ross, Miss Jean Alley and Miss
Diana Getchell, juniors.

"Oriental Garden" was the
prom theme. Bamboo fences
were arranged around the en
trance to the gymnasium where
the dance was' held, and Japan
ese lanterns lighted the scene.
The walls were lined with black
paper on which art students had
painted huge dragons. Manzani
ta boughs sprayed with paint
were covered with paper cherry
blossoms.
Bruce West was chairman of
decorations.
Although raw foods should
not be refrozen once thawed,
they can be cooked and then
the cooked product frozen.

Australians Leave
After Visit Here 4-
Mr. and Mrs. Percy Frye of
Melbourne, Australia,', left by
plane Monday after a short stay
in Medford as ' guests of Mr.
Frye's brother and sister-in-law,
Mr. and Mrs. Harold Frye,; 803
West Second street. While here
the two couples drove up the
Rogue to Prospect, and the Med
ford couple report that the visi
tors were ."amazed at the grand
eur of the Oregon mountains."
The visitors also enjoyed a drive
around the city to view gardens,
and were impressed with the
friendliness of Medford residents.-
Since Harold Frye is. a city
councilman, he , explained the
Medford water system to the' vis
itors and states they could hard-ly-believe
that the municipal wa
ter supply "had not seen day
light until it comes from the fau
cets in Medford, and had receiv
ed no. treatment." v. -.
Percy rye is factory manager
for A. G: Healing in Melbourne,
the same firm for. which -his
brother worked until leaving
Melbourne in 1931 to return to
the United States. The firm man
ufactures such articles as bicy
cles, car parts, washing .ma
chines, and is now branching in
to the television field. Mr. Frye
will keep business appointments
in Chicago, Cleveland, Evans
ville, Ind., and Toronto, Canada,
and will then, go from New York
to London by plane. The couple
will go by ship through the Me
diterranean, Red Sea and Indian
ocean, arriving back in Mel
bourne in September.

New York City will install offi
cers of the three units of -Wes-leyan
Service guild in a ceremony-
at Meeker Memorial
chapel of First Methodist church
Monday, May 14, at 8 o clock.
Mrs. Meeker, widow of a for
mer Medford mayor who was a
well-known Methodist lay lead
er, is now editor of the Methodist
Woman, national magazine of
tfle church. The chapel in which
the ceremony is to be held will
be dedicated and named for the
late Mayor Meeker in -a cere
mony set for this afternoon.

are president, Mrs. George Davis;

Noted Botanist
From Scotland
To Visit Region
The well known Dotanist,
Ewan H. M. Cox of Perth, Scot
land, will be the guest of Mr.
and Mrs. Marcel LePiniec of Ap
plegate May 14 and 15. Mrs. Cox,
who. is a Fellow of the Royal
Horticultural society and author
of "Farrer's Last-Journey," will
study the flora of the Siskiyou
region while here. He will be
aided by Mr. LePiniec, who is
an authority on rock plants both
here and abroad, and is also a
Fellow of the'Royal Horicultural
Society- ; '-" '
- Mr. LePiniec, who owns the
Garden Center nursery, will ac
company the visitor in to the
Siskiyous, where he may see the
wild flowers.' "
After his visit here, Mr. Cox,
who lectures both in the United
States and abroad, will be. speak
in- Portland, and continue on to
Seattle, where he will lecture at
the Washington Arboretum. The
visitors collected plants with the
world famous botanist, Reginald
Farrer in Upper Burma, is also
founder and editor of "The New
Flora and Silva," an illustrated
quarterly horticultural journal
published in London, and is. au
thor of "Plant Hunting in China"
and other books.

Student Receives
Two Scholarships;
Auxiliary is Donor
Among Medford high school
students to receive scholarships
this spring is Miss Sandra Jean
Laing, who has been given two
nursing school ' awards.) : Miss
Laing, a daughter of Mrs. Nellie
Laing, 260 Beatty street, is an
honor student at Medford high
school, a member of Torch Honor
society and of Future Nurses' as
sociation at the school. She also
is head majorette and a student
of acrobatic dancing at the Col
leen Hope Dance studios.
The auxiliary to the Jackson
County Medical society pre
sented Miss Laing a $200 tuition
award. Mrs. M. L. Vorheis is
chairman of the auxiliary schol
arship committee who made the
award.
The other scholarship has been
given her by the University of
Oregon and is for a year's tuition
to the school. Medford Fuel com
pany furnished the university
the funds which made this award
available, .
The student, who has been in
terested in sciences during her
schools year, plans to work this
summer as a nurse aid at Sacred
Heart hospital and will enter
the university for her pre-nurs-ing
training next fall.- After at
tending the university for two
years she will enter the univer
sity's school of nursing in Port
land. Miss Laing's' mother is an
anesthetist at Community : hos
