General Motors
Shutdown Idles
About 500,000
Detroit (U.R) A shutdown of
all General Motors automotive
assembly operations and layoffs
by other auto firms today idled
about a half-million workers.
The sprawling GM organiza
tion said it would halt assem
blies for today only, giving a
"vacation" to more than 390,000
hourly-rated workers. A GM
spokesman sajd this week's pro
duction was cut to four days
"to balance production with
current customer demand."
Full production will be re
sumed Monday, he added.
The GM cutback followed an
estimate by the trade publica
tion Automotive News that this
week's car production would be
the lowest in the nation of 1956.
The cutback was expected to
lower the estimate of 111,230
units even further.
Poor Sales Blamed
Poor sales of new cars were
blamed for the GM cutback and
those by Ford and Chrysler, the
other members of the auto in
dustry's "Big Three."
The United Auto Workers Un
ion estimated that more than
123,000 auto workers were laid
off "indefinitely." UAW Presi
dent Walter P. Reuther asked
for joint labor-management con
ferences to solve what he called
an "alarming" rate of unemploy
ment in both the auto and farm
Implement industries.
Chrysler has idled 6,200 work
ers indefinitely at plants here
and in Evansville, Ind., since
Reuther's proposal and laid off
6,500 others for two days in
Detroit.
DOG REPELLENT WANTED
Washington (U.R) So many
postmen have been bitten by
dogs in the past year that the
Post Office Department is look
ing for "an effective dog repel
lent" for letter carriers and toy
ing with the idea of padding the
legs of postmen's pants.

Revised Plan Bids
To Be Opened Soon
Ashland Bids on revised
plans for the $500,000 physical
education plant at Southern Ore
gon college will be opened June
12 by the state board of higher
education in Portland, according
to President D. Elmo If. Steven
son. - Revised plans were to go out
for bids today. Bids were first
opened in March, but were more
than $100,000 over funds avail
able. If bids are acceptable at the
June meeting, construction on
the plant probably will start in
July, Dr. Stevenson said.
Plans for the reconstructicgt
of Memorial court into a college
union building will be consider
ed today, Dr. Stevenson said,
and bids may be called about
Sept 1, 1956. Reconstruction is
expected te cost about $300,000.

Hollywood 0J.R) Some 18
months ago, when I bought the
movie rights to "The Little Hut,"
the consensus of opinion among
those1 in the industry, who were
familiar 'with the plays,- was that
I must be absolutely nuts.
There was a play which had
been running five years in Lon
don, and nearly seven years in
Paris, and which had earned for
itself the reputation for being
roughly twice as risque as the
Folies Bergere.
Following, as it did, on the
heels of the controversy which
had raged about my play and
motion picture "The Moon Is
Blue" (which was denied a seal
of approval) my purchase of
"The Little Hut" spurred my
friends to offer me bets of 10-1
that I could never in a million
years get away with this one.
Apprehensions Justified
To a certain extent, these ap
prehensions were justifiable. The
basic situation of the play is fun
ny but obviously highly censor
able. It is a story of three people
the traditional triangle, namely
husband, wife and lover who
are wrecked on a desert island,
and who resolve their problems
by working out a design for tropical-island
; living whereby the
wife will be shared jointly, dur
ing alternating weeks by the two
gentlemen involved. Subsequent
ly a handsome young native
chieftain shows up, and, in effect,
declares himself in on this cozy
arrangement.
The problem confronting me
was simple, yet formidable: How
to retain all the fun and provoc
ative qualities which had made
"The Little Hut" internationally
famous, and yet never overstep
the bounds of good taste.
In other words, how do you
juggle husband, wife, loyer a
tropical island, a native chief,
the minimum of clothing, a great
deal of human nature (sex) and
yet keep it clean as a hound's
tooth?
"Well it can be done. Some
months from now you're going
to see Ava Gardner as the wife,

going to build for them on a real
tropical island.
I don't believe one laugh from
the play has been lost in the
transition; I believe many have
been added. Meanwhile, locked
in my safety deposit box, I have
a precious letter from the Motion
Picture Producers Association,
in which they approve my script
across the board.
They even passed a scene
which includes Ava in a bikini!
Floods Threaten

Flood waters rolled across
Michigan farmlands today and
posed a serious threat to a heavily-populated
six-county area.
The 'flooding spring rains
were already blamed for three
deaths and millions of dollars
worth of property damage in
southern Michigan.
They were the byproducts of
a deadlocked battle between
masses of warm and cold air
in the nation's midsection. The
conflict set off tornadoes in
Nebraska and Kansas Thursday
night, along with 100-mile-per-hour
windstorms and heavy hail.
Freight Cars Overturned
The twisters touched ground
at Juniata, Neb., and near Cas
sody in Kansas. At Juniata the
corkscrew winds overturned
four freight cars and another
storm, described as a possible
twister, demolished a grandstand
at Arlington, Neb.
The twisters caused little dam
age in Kansas, although ripping
winds toppled trees at Lyons.
A funnel was sighted over Iola,
but apparently ' did not touch
ground.
There was no letup in sight
in Michigan and the U.S. Weath
er Bureau warned floods could
strike within hours in the basins
of the Grand, Flint, Shiawassee
and Red Cedar rivers.
The threatened area included
cities and farmlands from Grand
Rapids to Flint, the state's two
largest cities outside Detroit.
Eisenhower To Attend
Meeting in Panama
Washington U.R) Presi
dent Eisenhower today formally
accepted an invitation to attend
a meeting of the 21 American
states at,. Panama Juhe 25-26.
The President's formal deci
sion to attend the meeting was
sent to Ricardo M. Arias Espi
nosa, president of Panama. The
announcement was made by the
White House.
. Mr. Eisenhower will meet at
Panama City with the presidents
of the 20 other American repub
lics to commemorate the 130th
anniversary of the first Congress
of Panama. The Congress was
called in 1826 by Simon Boli
var. .

will open the silver anniversary
two-day meeting of the Oregon-Washington-C
alifornia Pear
bureau.
i-'The bureau was organized in
1931 by growers from Oregon
and Washington. California later
joined the organization, purpose
of which is to promote sale of
pears throughout the United
States and foreign countries.
Among the first trustees were
David H. Holmes Sr., ' R. R.
Reter, D. R. Wood and Paul A.
Scherer, all of Medford, and H.
Van Hoevenberg of Gold Hill.
Edwin' R. Pooley of Hood
River and one . of the first
trustees is president of the or
ganization. -
The bureau estimates that the
1956 crop should be more than
5,000,000 boxes, compared to the
10-year average of 4,717,428
boxes. The Medford area pro
duces the largest number of
boxes of five main areas within
the bureau. The 10-year average
for the Medford area is 1,527,
615 boxes.
Other areas include Mid-Columbia,
1,406,523; Wenatchee,
712,094; Yakima, 562,567; and
California, 508,629 boxes. Fig
ures are on a 10-year average.
The winter pear industry, the
bureau said, brought an average
return of $4.62 per box, or more
than $21,000,000, into the Pa
cific coast area during 1955.
Rubber Plantation' Workers Plan Strike
Kuala Lumpur, Malaya (U.R)
Some 230,000 rubber plantation
workers prepared to go on strike
today to support their demands
for wage increases.
The strike might bring a coun
try-wide transportation stoppage
if the national Union of Trans
port Workers carry out their,
pledge of support to the rubber
workers with a national strike
