Supersonic 'Race Track7 To Test
Survival in Emergency Bailouts

Hurricane, Utah (U.R) A semi
public showing: of SMART,
America's fastest "race track," is
planned for late this month on
Hurricane Mesa, just west of
colorful Zion National Park.
SMART stands for Supersonic
Military Air Research Track.
Objective of the 12,000-foot
long track and its rocket-propelled
sleds is to perfect ways
for crews of America's super
sonic airplanes to survive emer
gency bailouts while flying high
and fast.
Civilian contractors turned the
test track over to the govern
ment last summer, but military
security has veiled operations
since and nothing has been made
public on performance of the
$2,000,000 facility.
However, the Air Research
and Development Center at
Baltimore, Md., . operator of
SMART, and the Coleman En
gineering Co. of Los Angeles,
the civilian contractor, have set
up a limited tour of the project
for newsmen on May 25 to pro
vide a first-hand account of its
operations.
Two Sleds Propelled
If the track is operating ac
cording to original plans, the
press, radio and television re
porters and cameramen should
see a spectacular demonstration.

yesterday that Oregon is in dan
ger of losuig federal funds ap
propriated for the restoration
of salmon runs on the lower CO-
lumhia river and accused Gov,
Elmo Smith and the Oregon Fish
commission of placing the lea-
eral aid in ieonardy.
Neuberger said that at a re-
ppnt hearing on the Columbia
fish program senators were crit
ical of the lack of action taken
by the state to carry out its end
of the bargain.

this committee, that if you come
here next year with an unobli
gated balance, I guarantee you
we will cut it back," Neuberger
quoted Ellender as saying.
Land Difficulties Told

chief of the Game-Fish and
TTateheries branch of the U. S.
Fish and Wildlife service, told
the meeting that the Oregon a isa
rnmmission has not been able to
obligate it money rapidly en
ough because they had land dif
ficulties and in procurement of
engineers.
"There is no valid excuse for
this inability of Oregon to live up

eral-State Cooperative project,"
Neuberger commented.

Litigation Causes Delays
In Portland. M. T. Hoy. state
fisheries director, said the state
was moving as fast as it was aDie
to meet its obligations to federal
agencies. He said there had beep.
numerous delays caused by pro
tracted court litigation over fish
suits to condemn
property for hatchery construc
tion. One such case, in fciooa uv

months because of a missing heir,
Hoy said.

eight-inches apart, that have
been placed precisely level
on concrete pedestals marching
more than two miles through a
clearing on the top of Hurricane
Mesa.
At the edge of the clearing
are 28 towers where high-speed
cameras record progress of the
experiments.
At the north end is a rein
forced concrete "blockhouse"
where project directors, protect
ed from the intense heat of the
rocket blasts, operate controls.
A director's signal ,fblast off'
the rockets. Two sleds, riding
the greased rails on. slipper-like
"shoes," are propelled down the
track at a speed designers hoped
would exceed 1,500 miles an
hour, more than twice the speed
of sound at this altitude.
When the sleds reach the south
end 'of the mesa, a projection
from the underneath side of the
rear "pusher" carriage splashes
into a water troueh that serves
as a braking device to bring it
to an abrupt halt.
As the "pusher" stoDs. the for
ward sled receives another rock
et blast according to specifica
tions and leaps over the edge
of the mesa. At the same time, a
projectile simulating that car
ried by aircraft "ejects" the test
capsule carrfed on the sled.
No Passengers on Sleds
Both the capsule and the for
ward sled are lowered by para
chute to landing mats at the
base of the mesa, 1,500 feet be
low the rimrock edge, and onto
the desert between Hurricane
Mesa and the meandering Virgin
river.
Arrangements have been made
to stop traffic on the highway
from Hurricane to Zion Park
while the experiments are in
progress to avoid having some
of the .devices land on passing
cars of park-bound tourists.
The Air Force, in setting up
SMART, said that at no time
would humans be carried in the
sleds but the "cargo" would be
confined to instruments and
dummies.
At a similar, "slower" track in
New Mexico, Lt.'Col. John P.
Stapp late In 1954 rode a rocket
sled at a speed of 632 miles an
hour, the fastest man has ever
traveled on the ground. An un
manned sled on the Navy's track
at China Lake, Calif., has at
tained 'an announced speed of
1,280 mph.
The Utah project was tet up
for research into problems en
countered by airmen in leaving
their war planes while traveling
at supersonic speeds. Few pilots
have survived such bail outs
with current "ejection seat"
equipment.
