Tuberculosis Problem 10-Year Program Meet the Candidates
Increasing in Local
Areas, Official Says
Tuberculosis is becoming an
increasing problem to local com
munities and to local health or-
ganiaztions, Kenneth Ross, ex
ecutive secretary of the Oregon
Tuberculosis and Health associa
tion said during a recent visit
here.
"Contrary to the belief of
many people, the number of
cases of tuberculosis has not de
creased during the past several
years but because of the new
drug treatments, patients are
not dying and are not hospital
ized as long, he said. ' Instead,
they are returning to their
homes from the state-financed
sanitariums and the local com
munities are then faced with
the problems of supplying ex
pensive drugs and care. Very

added.
Ross pointed out the 15 new
cases in Jackson county last
year will represent an expendi
ture of approximately $225,000
in tax money. Studies have
shown that each case of tuber
culosis costs at least $15,000 un
less found in the early stages.
There were 636 new cases in
Oregon last year.
Recent Study
Quoting from a recent study
of the changing picture in tu
berculosis control, Ross stated
the study shows only about half
the tuberculosis case load is now
in hospitals, the other half be
ing cared for in homes. Of the
half in local communities, 87
per cent are far advanced, the
report indicates.
Ross commended the Jackson
County Public Health associa
tion, the local affiliate of the
State Tuberculosis and Health
association, for its efforts
through the chest x-ray clinic
and the hospital x-ray programs
to find unknown and early tu
berculosis infections.

Heart hospital.
Reconsideration Asked
On Hawthorn Tracks
Portland (U.R) The Port
land Association of Building
Owners and Managers yesterday
asked the city to reconsider its
stand in opposition to interurban
tracks on the new approaches to
the Hawthorne bridge.
Arvin Burnett, spokesman for
the association, said in a letter to
the city council that the group
was concerned over "the failure
to find a satisfactory solution"
to trackage on the bridge.
' "We believe that wherever
possible such lines should be
continued into the heart of the
city," Burnett said.

Mission 66, a program design
ed to increase U.S. national park
facilities to suitable standards
within the next ten years, was
outlinde for the Medford Rotary
club Tuesday by T. C. Williams
superintendent of Crater Lake
National park.
In a brief luncheon address
at the Jackson hotel Williams
pointed out that understandable
emphasis upon defense spending
had resulted in curtailed aporo-
priations and serious shortages
of parks facilities while attend
ance is steadily increasing.
Approximately 50,000,000 peo
pie will visit various parks and
monuments this year, and it is
estimated that attendance fig
ures will jump to 80,000,000 by
1966, he said.
Capital Encouraged
In the Mission 66 program
private capital will be encour
aged to invest in public housing
accommodations wherever pos
sible. Fast-growing popularity of
outdoor camping will be taken
into consideration in the new 10
year plan for rehabilitation and
development. Trails, buildings,
scenic roads and view ooints
and other facilities will be
brought to satisfactory stand
ards and extended to accommo
d a t e anticipated tourist in
creases, Williams pointed out.

Hippopotamus Born

Rio Zoo had ; another unusual
birth Tuesday.
A baby hippopotamus was
born, said, to be a rare occur
rence in captivity.- Two months
ago the zoo announced the birth
of a rhinoceros, the second to
be born in captivity here and
the third in the world.

ALLEN D. CURRY
In seeking my first political
office in Jackson County I re
spectfully .submit the following
information.
I was born Jan. 25, 1889, at
Norton, Kan. Was raised on the
farm and farmed there many
years before coming to Oregon
in 1926, and the City of Medford
in the fall of 1928. I own my
home at 505 Benson st., and have
lived at this address since the
spring of 1929.
I have four sisters living here,
two of them are with the Med
ford school district; Miss Olive
Curry as school nurse and Mrs.
Eleanor Hamilton, teacher in
the Roosevelt school. Their rec
ords speak for themselves.
My wife passed away in 1939,
leaving me with five children
who were all graduated from the
Medford schools.
I am an active member of the
First Christian church and have
been an active member of the
Rogue Valley Gideons since
1947.
I come seeking the nomina-.
tion for the office of County
Assessor of Jackson County on
the Republican ticket. This being
my first adventure in the politi
cal field in Oregon", it is not al
together new to me, as I have
been following things pretty
close for many years and don't
believe I have failed to exercise
my rights and duty to vote since
I first voted. -
I have .been dealing with the
public for - many years, having
been township assessor in Kansas
for three years; was in the tax
department of the Sheriff s of
fice for a year and a half here
m Jackson county, was an em
ployee of the City of Medford,
in the treasurer's and recorder's
office for five years; was trans
ferred to the water department
in 1933 where I was office man
ager and accountant at my re
tirement the first of March 1955.
In connection with my work in
the water department I served
as city police judge for a period
of nine years, receiving much
valuable experience and knowledge.
Most of you know that the as
sessment of the property in the
state of Oregon is controlled by
the State Tax commission, there-

sociated with Western Detective
es and today am manager for the
same agency in Medford.
I am a member of the William
Penn order, Patriotic Sons -of
America Elks, Exchange club,
and in good standing in the
AFofL union.
My slogan is efficiency, integ
rity and a fair and just tax to
all.

onds. Chuch turner took the 330
yard run in 44.2 seconds Richard
Jones passed the football 131
feet 6 inches and threw the 8
pound shot 30 feet 8J inches.
Rogue River awarded ribbons
to all first, second and third
place winners.
ROOSEVELT ANNEX
On Thursday, April 26, the
sixth grade Oregon histqry
classes of . Roosevelt school in
Medford participated in a field
trip to Jacksonville.
More than 110 students and
teachers saw interesting collec
tions in the "Jacksonville Muse
um and the old buildings of the
city.
Transportation to and from
Jacksonville was furnished by
school district buses. The stu
dents said that this type of ac
tivity makes Oregon history
more meaningful.
