Chicago (U.R) Democrats will
hold their national convention
this summer in a "new look"
International Amphitheatre com
plete with a rooftop heliport and
an indoor railroad spur that has
"room for a presidential special."
Merton E. Thayer, general
manager of the big exposition
building, said today that news
reel and TV servic.es already
have contracted for a helicopter
shuttle service to fly film be
tween the Amphitheatre and
Midwap Airport.
He didn't know what use the
Democrats would make of the
trackage that can accommodate
10 cars under one roof. But
Neale Roach, manager of the
convention, had a ready com
ment: "We'll use it for a presidential
special in 1960."
Thayer said the amphitheater
' management is going all out to
make the Democrats comfortable
at the convention opening Aug.
13.
"Since the Republican and Dem
ocratic conventions were held
here in 1952," he said, "we've
conducted a $2,000,000 improve
ment program and now have
420,000 square feet of floor space
all under one roof.
A huge new exhibition hall
has been added at the south end
of the amphitheatre. Parking
areas for 2,000 cars have been
hard-surfaced. The press work
room area has been partially
"air-conditioned. A half million
dollars has been spent on new
electrical facilities. And a com
bination super service station-restaurant-motel
has been built
on the grounds.
For the first time ' in history,
Roach sf'id, the Democrats have
leased space for an industrial
commercial fair at the conven
tion. The fair, to be known as
the "American Showcase," will
allot space to exhibitors in the
building's norlh wing. A New
York exhibition firm is han
dling the affair.
Plotting the workroom facil
ities and assignment of space is
under way, Roach said. But the
actual construction of special
radio and TV studios, the work
ing press stands in the Amphi
theatre, the press workrooms
backstage and other tempoary
facilities won't begin until about
Aug. 1.
Even grimy old Halsted at.,
on which the amphitheatre is
located, has been dressed up.
During the past year its trolley
tracks have been removed, old
cobblestone has been replaced
by black top, and new lighting
installed.

tion pass they forgot to bring

Helen E. I can't marry just
to please my parents.
Mrs. P. E. Our youngest
daughter, aged 26, is a problem
to us. Our three older children
have all been happily settled in
their own families for years. But
Helen shows no sign of being
anywhere near marriage.
She is a lively girl, and used to
be very popular. But she is just
too choosy. Sometimes I don't
think she wants to get married
at all She refused to even go out
with some of the nice, young
men who have liked her. Now all
her friends have gotten married
and the number of eligible men
gets fewer all the time.
Helen has had some . bad
breaks. She was in love a few
times with men who, for one
reason or another, wouldn't give
her a tumble. But she treats
some of the nice young men who
fall in love with her like dirt.
My husband and I are not gett
ing any younger and we want to
see Helen married.
We are very worried about
her as she has become terribly
nervous and looks unhappy..
Helen E. My mother seems
to think that I am being delib
erately stubborn and that I don't
really want to get married. The
fact , is I am very eager to get
married, but I can't do it just
to please my parents. I want to
marry someone I can love and
respect and I just haven't been
able to feel that way about any
of the men who have liked me.

wants to get married can usually
find one young man from among
several, whom she can "love and
rsepect." Also, many a girl falls
in love with a man who does not
respond, but if the experience is
repeated several times as in
Helen's case, it indicates no mere
"bad break," but a pattern that
is sought.
Mrs. P. E. and her husband
would do well to try to overcome
their own anxiety and to free
Helen from the pressure of their
hopes and fears. The fact their
other children have made happy
marriages is a reasonable indica
tion that their home was a good
one and that their children all
have normal attitudes toward
marriage.
Not everyone is ready for mar
riage at the same age and it may
be that there were factors in
Helen's environment that made
her withdraw from forming such
a relationship as early in life as
her brothers and sisters did.
The parents would . also do
well to refuse to take Helen's
unrealistic -romances seriously
and to reject the idea that she
has had "bad breaks." This no
tion encourages a . self-pitying
outlook, which can easily be
come a substitute for seeking a
constructive relationship.
Helen needs to concentrate
less on marriage and more on
developing interests that lead to
wholesome pleasures and friendships.

The Council: It is no wonder
that Helen is nervous and looks

sures being brought to bear on
her. She apparently shares her
parent's anxieties and has found
an effective way of evading some
of the pressure and at the same
time punishing herself for her
guilt in disappointing her parents
by falling in love with men who
do not care for her.
