Princesses' Ball Conducted

Phoenix The princesses' ball,
the first public activity of the
May festival held Friday night,
was well attended. Master of
ceremonies for the evening was
Jack Cook Jr., who Introduced
the girls.
The candidates for the queen
are Charlotte Keene, daughter of
Mr. and Mrs. Chester Keene; Pat
Adams, daughter of Mr. and
Mrs. Dan Adams; Jane Daniels,
daughter of Mrs. Adulla Paul
nd Ray Daniels, both of Med
ford; Dorothy Bean, daughter of
Mr. and Mrs. Robert J. Bean, and
Sandra Owens, daughter of Mr.
nd Mrs. Roscoe Owens. The
iris are selling tickets to be
queen of the May festival May
28. Deadline for the votes is May
25.
Refreshments of cake and cof
fee were served during the eve
ning. Another planning meeting
Is scheduled for Monday at 8
p.m. at the Community club.
Relatives and friends of Mrs.
Lulu Rusho were shocked at her
sudden passing last week. She
had been ill for some' time. Mrs.
Rusho was an old-time resident,
her parents being Nannie and
John Roberts, of one of the older
Phoenix families. Burial took
place in the Phoenix cemetery.
Mrs. Tom Caster is still in a
Medford hospital after under
going surgery a few days ago.
Mrs. Elzie McCulley recently
opened her new dressmaking
shop in the new Skinner building
on First st. across from Gier's
post office. It is called Jessies
Drug store, and next to the new
Dresmaking shop.
Mrs. McCulley was with
Mann's Department store in
Medford over nine years.
New York (U.R) "Ander
sonville," by MacKinlay Kantor,
has been awarded the Pulitzer
Price for the best novel of the
year.

New Action Seen for
Penal Institution
Salem (U.R) Gov. Elmo Smith
said yesteday that unless pro
posed, intermediate penal insti
tution can be located on land
now owned by the state, the
project may have to wait for
a new appropriation from the
1957 Legislature.
The governor said that money
paid by the Air Force for the
St. Paul institution site which
the Air Force needs for its new
jet base will revert to the state
general fund.
Approximately $70,000 was
spent by the State Board of Con
trol for the St. Paul site. Some
$10,000 was spent in the pre
liminary work at the site before
the Air Force revealed Its need
of the property.
The governor said, he hoped
the $10,000 could be recouped
through sale of the land to the
government. However, he said
he didn't think the' Air Force
money could be used in purchas
ing new land for the institution.
Roundfable Members Hear
Freeway Route Discussion
The state highway commission
believes a freeway route on the
west side of the valley ii not
feasible because it would be too
expensive, it was reported yes
terday. Paul Rynning, county engineer,
reported on various proposed
routes for a freeway by-pass at
the noon meeting of the Jackson
County Chamber of Commerce
roundtable at the Jackson hotel.
The commission has not said
why the west side route would
be too expensive, several per
sons present pointed out. And
others said they believe the pro
posal would be superior to the
two the highway commission has
under consideration, along the
Hillcreast line east of town, and
through the city on the Genessee
route
Questioning Suggested
It was suggested that commis
sion members be questioned re
garding the expense of the west
side proposal during the hearing
to be held on the proposals in
the city hall May 24.
Advantages and disadvantages
of the Genessee and Hillcreast
lines were discussed by Rynning,
chairman of a committee named
to investigate them.
Rynning said the Hillcrest
route would afford a better sce
nic view of the valley, would cut
through a less densely populated
area, there would be less noise
to disturb residents, and that
the tendency to divide the city
would be avoided.
Tells Disadvantages
Disadvantages, Rynning said,
are possible damage to the new
Rogue Valley Memorial hospital
site due to highway noise, dis
traction of valuable orchard
property, splitting of economic
farm units, with no access pro
vided, resulting in uneconomic
farm and orchard parcels; dam-

see route, Rynning said, are that
highway noise would not disturb
the hospital, that there would be
less damage to orchard property
and division of farm units and
that the Genessee development
may stimulate the beginning of a
transition from residences to
business locations between Bear
Creek and Genessee. He pointed
out that any freeway might
cause loss to wayside industries
but the Genessee proposal might
tend to keep this loss to a min
imum. Rynning added that becaues
of its proximity to Medford, it is
expected the city would be put
to less expense in the provision
of access routes to the freeway,
that this route provides more
convenience in that there are
more traffic interchanges which
are closer to Medford, and that
the Genessee route crosses fewer
county roads than the Hillcrest
proposal.
