Church Sniper
Suspect Seized
New York (U.R) The chief
suspect in the sniper shooting
Saturday which killed a church
warden and wounded five other
persons surrendered to authori
ties today.
Tony Tudorache, 60, a former
employee of the Romanian Or
thodox church of St. Dumitru
where the shootings occurred,
came voluntarily to the district
attorney's office and told a de
tective: "I understand I'm want
ed for questioning." ,
He was immediately taken to
an interrogation room to be
asked about the shootings which
some investigators believed was
an apparent attempt to assassi
nate former Romanian Princess
Ileana, sister of the last King
Carol.
Princess Ileana narrowly
missed being struck by the bul
lets which scattered a crowd of
400 worshippers as they gath
ered Saturday for a midnight
candlelight procession at the
church. .
Police said the shots were
fired from Tudorache's room, lo
cated diagonally opposite the
church.
Methodists Told
Of Racial Progress
Minneapolis U.R) Method
ists attending the quadrennial
General conference of the Meth
odist church were told yesterday
that the goal of integration
within the church "has been
taken with a unanimity of spirit
which augurs well for concrete
progress."
Rev. Dr. Ralph W. Sockman,
New York, said "The North rec
ognizes the earnest work of sin
cere Christian leaders through
out the South." He' addressed
more than 7,000. Methodists at
the .closing worship service of
the conference which has been
in session here since April 25.
The church early last week
adopted amendments providing
for voluntary end :of segrega
tion within the church. At pres
ent, the church has a segregated
Negro jurisdiction of 360,000
members. 1
The conference urged a return
to prohibition in a strongly
worded resolution passed Satur
day. Also approved was a state
ment on the Christian family
which included a .statement of
belief in planned parenthood.
A Negro was named to the
highest lay post in the church.
J. Ernest Wilkins, Washington,
D.C., was named president of the
Judicial council, the "supreme
court" of the Methodist church.

John Barrymore in "Don Juan?"
Anyway, this year is the 30th
anniversary of the first program

all in talking picture form, was
Will Hayes making a speech.
Mischa Elman playing "Humor

The feature film was "Don

Am asked in what states other
than Nevada is it possible to
secure a divorce after a - com
paratively short period of resi
dence. Idaho requires only six
weeks, same as Nevada. In Ar
kansas it is 60 days'. Same in
Wyoming. In Utah it is three
months. In Florida 90 days. In
cidentally, speedy divorce is by
no means a recent development.
In ancient Rome a divorce
could be obtained in 30 seconds.
History tells us that one Roman
woman of that period had 10
different husbands in a month.

Consumers Becoming Avid
Collectors of Stamps in
Wide Craze for Coupons
New York (U.R) Consum
ers are becoming avid stamp col
lectors in a coupon craze which
is sweeping the country, a Unit
ed Press survey revealed today.
Chain' stores, supermarkets,
and individual store owners
have entered the competition
for customers by issuing multi-
hued savings stamps and prem
ium coupons for purchases.
The amount of stamps a con
sumer receives is proportionate
to the amount of the purchase.
The bigger the purchase, the
greater number of stamps re
ceived. Stamps Redeemable
The stamps are redeemable ei
ther at the store where the pur
chase was made or at redemption
stores. After saving a certain
number of stamps the consumer
may then turn them in for a cer
tain amount of merchandise or
prizes listed in a premium cata
log. Mrs. Housewife is lured by a
pot of bonus gifts at the end of
a rainbow assortment of savings
stamps when she does the fam
ily marketing.
She may have a choice of shop
ping in a variety of stores which
offer pink : tapes, blue, green,
gold; brown, yellow, red or even
purple stamps, which may be re
deemable for anything ranging
from aluminum cookware to au
tomobiles. Gets Gift Catalogue
Mrs. Housewife may decide
to shop in the Grand Union food
markets m New York which of
fer "Triple-S" blue stamps or a
grocery in Sacramento, Calif.,
her feminine friends. As for
example, she could be ironing
one of her loving husband's
shirts whilei telephoning. Or be
peeling potatoes. Or doing some
thing equally useful.
Asides
Only 30 per cent of persons
of marriageable age in Ireland
are married. Of the rest, 64 per
cent are bachelors and spinsters.
Six per cent are widows and
widowers . . . Prince Aly Khan,
one of the best husbands Rita
Hay worth ever had, speaks 12
languages . . . Georges Hardy,
celebrated barber of Paris, uses
a razor only for a haircut. Mon
sieur Hardy claims that is the
only way to give a man a truly
artistic haircut.

Testimony Urged by
White House Aides
Washington (U.R) Sen.
Hubert H. Humphrey suggested
yesterday that the Senate Per
manent Investigating Subcom
mittee "invite" two White
aides to testify in the case of
Murray M. Chotiner, Vice-President
Richard M. Nixon's 1952
campaign manager.
The Minnesota Democrat said
the subcommittee so far has
"passed over too lightly," the
connection between Chotiner
and White House official Max
well Rabb and former presiden
tial aide Charles Willis.
Chotiner told the subcommit
tee last week that Rabb and
"lllis made telephone calls
from the White House to in
quire about the status of two
airline cases he was handling.
In both cases, the Civil Aeronau
tics Board ruled against Chotin

Justifications Given
The mayor responded with
four justifications of the coun
cil's actions. They are (1) the
council has held no private
meetings to transact the town's
business, although in the event
of special meetings, the location
has, on certain occasions, been
changed to suit the circum
stances, (2) the council has the
right under the charter of Tal

employees, including the mar
shal, whenever in the council's
judgment the interests of the
town require such action, (3) the
council has always been open,
to the complaints by citizens,
and (4) the council has always
acted in accordance with the
council's best judgment for the
welfare of the town of Talent
and in opposition to pressure
groups seeking individual
