Employment in
Biggest Upswing
During April
Salem U.R Some 14,000
Oregon workeri found jobs last
month for the biggest April up
swing in employment since 1950,
The State Unemployment Com
mission said only 28,700 persons
were seeking jobs May 1 against
42,200 a month before and 39,
'700 last year.
Resumption of seasonal activi
ties because of the dry, settled
weather was the prime factor In
the uptrend, most managers re
ported.
Portland Leads Moramant
Portland area led the back-to-
work movement with 4,000 find
ing jobs and only 10,700 unem
ployed against 17,300 a year ago.
The commission said western
Oregon timber districts also Im
proved greatly during the month
although much of the change was
due more to farming, construc
tion and activities other than
logging.
Coos Bay, Astoria and other
coastal points said dry weather
had hastened spring logging.
Lebanon, Tillamook, Grants
Pass, Albany and Medford re
ported 50 per cent cuts in unem
ployment. Little change from
last year was noted around The
Dalles. Ontario, Baker, Bend
and other eastern Oregon points.
Play To Be Staged

Ashland Several players who
have had roles in previous South
rn Oregon college dramatic
productions will be seen in the
spring quarter play. "The Great
Big Doorstep," May 11 and 12.
Nancy Jennings, who will be
remembered as Mrs. Edwards
In 'Kind Lady," will play Mrs.
Crochet, the mother "heroine"
of the play. Her husband will be
Tom McCauley, who made his
debut in the same play as the
conniving doctor.
Dan Dollarhide the Mr. Ed
wards of the winter production,
plays Uncle Dewey, a river boat
captain. Patty Read, who was
the maid last term, is a child in
the spring production.
Audrey Russell, the leading
character in "Kind Lady," will
play the role of the florist.
Players who will be seen for
the first time in a SOC produc
tion are Melba Snow, Larry
Kenyon, Norman McCabe, La
Rayne Weed, Sharon Ostrander,
Karen Amundson, and Bill Har-bins.
Prospect School to
Get $10,276.68
Sen. Richard L. Neuberger
has advised Prospect School
district 59 that it has been
awarded a tentative entitlement
of $10,276.68 under Public Law
874, for the fiscal year of 1956
by the office of education of the
department of health, education
and welfare.
The district was certified for
an immediate payment of
$6,679. A treasury check for that
amount has been sent to the dis
trict. The funds are distributed to
school districts under the pro
gram to provide financial as
sistance for schools in federally
affected areas.
Boy Scouts
Pack 110
Cub Scout Pack 110, met April
30, with Cubmaster Jennings
calling the meeting to order.
James Bench led the boys in the
Lord's Prayer. The law of Pack
and Cub Scout promise were led
by Danny Cooper and Dick
Carver.
Den 1 put on s skit, portraying,
for the parents and other cubs,
a typical den meeting. A piece
of wrapping paper used as a rug
in the game was later auctioned
off by Cubmaster Jennings, and
it brought the sum of $4 to the
Pack.
Den 2 sang "Oh Susanna." The
den was turned over to a new
den mother, Mrs. Amos. Mrs.
Burrer is the retiring den
mother.
Den 3 had a welcoming cere
mony for a new boy entering
the group.
Den 4 conducted a radio quiz
program.
Awards were presented to
seven boys by their parents. Re
ceiving awards were Danny
Cooper, Wade Loofbourrow, and
Johnny Granby. Wolf badges;
Herbert Amos, Tim Patrick, and
Kenny Kurz, bear badges; David
Westfall, lion badge Tim Pat
rick received one gold arrow and
two arrows.
4-H Club News
Wesisida Club
The Westside Cooking club
met at Judy Gebhard's home.
Linda Gibson led the flag
salutes and Susan Wright call
ed the meeting. Seven members
and one new member attended.
We talked about a Mothers tea
and made flower holders. Next
meeting will be at the Kellow
home, June 7 at 7:30 pjn. Mrs.
Gebhard served refreshments.
