organized baseball is that for
each great
there are hun
dreds o near-
greats who
think they
were great.
Most of the
latter are nas
ty letter writ
ers.
Add these
Harman Nichols notes to the
mail from fans of the almost-made-its
and you have a pretty
big bundle.
My friend, Ira L. Smith, has
been taking abuse in this matter
for several years. He is in the
middle of a series of books on
famous diamond stars. First
there were pitchers. Then out
fielders. The most current vol
ume is "Baseball's Famous First
Basemen."
Ira Bucks Up
But Ira, who has one of the
finest collection of baseball anec
dotes anywhere, bucks up and
plods along. He says he isn't as
bogged down as Liberace on the
way to the bank, but he likes his
work, nonetheless.
His treatment of first base
men, as do the preceding books,
runs the gamut by periods.
In the 1871-1899 era, there is
an interesting chapter on Adrian
Constantine (Cap) Anson. Cap
once got mad with people who
said he was too old at 39 to
play baseball and borrowed a
set of chin whiskers and wore
them on the field. Cap finally
quit at 45.
Frank Leroy Chance of tne
era through 1917 is well known
as a member of the famed Tink-ers-to-Evers-to
- Chance double
play combination of the old Chi
cago Cubs. But you may not
know that in 1913 he batted for
two other players in the same
inning.

Yankees at the time. Things

There were many great first
basemen in the era between 1918
and 1940. Fellows like Sunny
Jim Bottomley, Bill Terry, Jim
my Foxx, and the immortal Lou
Gehrig, the old-time Iron Man.
In the period from '41 to the
present, Ira has concentrated on
the likes of Johnny Mize, Rudy
York, Phil Cavarretta among
others.
Smith, never a big-leaguer,
has been saving information on
ball players since "he was a kid.
His good wife wishes to thunder
he would clean some of those
loaded trunks full of clippings
out of her attic.
Here are some facts you might
not know about first basemen.
More than 8500 players have
been in the majors, and about
1000 of them at one time or
another have perched on first
base from one game to 22 sea
sons.' All but 188 of them also
have appeared in other posi
tions. Most of the great players who
caught the fans' fancy at other
positions, had short trips to the
initial sack. To name a few: Ty
Cobb, Ed Delahanty, Pie- Tray
nor, Wilbert Robinson, Christie
Mathewson, Joe DiMaggio, Rog
ers Hornsby.
And of course, Stan (The Man)
Musial who has played a great
deal at first with the Cardinals.
Even though he throws from
starboard, he has done a credit
able job.
Nine men who have been on
the rosters of big league teams
as first basemen played only one
game in the majors. One of
these was Walter Alston, now
manager of the Brooklyn
Dodgers.

Feted on Retirement
After Long Service
Fred Morris, who has retired
after 43 years as freight and
passenger agent for Southern Pa
cific company, was honored
guest Monday night at a ban
quet for company officials and
their wives in the Jackson ho
tel. Railroad officials from Duns
muir, Portland- and Eugene, as
well as 100 other of Morris' as
sociation, were in attendance.
George M. Joyce, MedfOrd,
trainmaster, was master of cere
monies. Highlight of the program was
prese'.tation of a gift to Morris
from the company. Well wishes
were extended by Superintend
ent A. .W. Kilborni Dunsmuir,
the master of ceremonies and
Bob Holmes, district freight and
passenger agent.
B. W. Bishop, Portland, as
sistant superintendent of the SP
company, read a poem by Tom
Milne describing Morris' exper
ience as agent, and a railroad
quartet sang two numbers. Quar
tet members are Bert Havard,
Chicago Northwestern Railroad;
John Stromberg, Union Pacific;
Bob Burnett, Denver and Rio
Grande Western and Bob Holmes
of SP. David B. Crosby was
pianist.
Morris worked for five years
for the Denver and Rio Grande
Western company before taking
his SP position and is retiring
with a total of 48 years of ser
vice. A. E. Dussault has been
appointed temporary agent to
succeed him.
Church Arranges
Arrival of Polish
Family in Medford
First Methodist church con
gregation has arranged for the
arrival of a Polish displaced
family in Medford, it was dis
closed today through church of
ficers. They are Mr. and Mrs.
Jersey Muller and two grade
school children. Date of their
arrival here has not been deter
minded. -
The Mullers are said to have
been interned in a Russian con
centration camp but made their
escape.
Though the church is sponsor
ing the family in coming to this
country, members of the church's
Suzanna Wesleyan service guild
will assist in rehabilitation ex
penses of the family until thsy
become self-supporting, Mrs.
Gerry Sherman, president-elect
of the guild announced today.
To raise funds members of the
guild have volunteered to offer
their services in baby sitting,
ironing and light housework for
the next two weeks. They have
set a nominal hourly fee for their
endeavors. .
Anyone in the vicinity who
wants to share in their project
by hiring members for any of
the tasks may call Mrs. Sherman,
telephone 2-4022.
Change Announced
In Polling Places
Changes of polling places in
two of Jackson county's 94 per
cincts have been announced by
the county clerk's office.
The Jacksonville Community
hall will be the voting place for
Precinct 65, is was reported. It
formerly was at the old U.S.
Hotel, which has been con
demned for public use.
The other change is in Pre
cinct 84, from Little Applegate
School to the old West .place,
located on the Applegate Rd.,
the office reported.
A complete list of the polling
places in the county will be
printed again in the Mail Tribune
before the May 18 primary election.
Prospect Man Files
$25,000 Lawsuit
A lawsuit asking $25,000 has
been filed by Homer J. Johnson,
Prospect, against William Morris,
Prospect, for damages that John
son claims to have received Nov.
6, 1955 in a Prospect cafe.'
He declares in his complaint
that Morris grabbed him, threw
him to the floor, twisted his leg
and finally ordered him out of
the cafe:
In his complaint, Johnson said
his right leg was fractured as a
direct result of Morris' actions,
when he said he intended to
show Johnson some judo holds.
