commissioner Charles H. Heltzel
has set May 14 for a hearing on
Greyhound Lines application to
increase most bus fares about 15
per cent.
Greyhound said its costs were
up and traffic was down so that
present revenues were not suf
ficient for the costs of opera
tion. The hearing will be held in
the state office building in Portland.

who wants psychiatric help, but
who has such a terrible problem
and such an
insoluble one
I do not see
how even the
most kindly
and skillful
p s y c hiatrist

stance: The
other day in
haurc Alvarej came a sau-
looking woman who said that
since childhood she has always
been unhappy and at times de
spondent. As a child, she was
miserable because her father
was a very unpleasant and bad
tempered man, who apparently
was mentally abnormal. He was
the worse for the great strain of
supporting eight children. Curi
ously, be blamed his wife for
having so many children, and
he blamed them for having come
along. He fussed at the poor
wife, he nagged her, and he was
mean to the children.
When my patient married, her
husband was making barely
enough for them to live on. Aft
er two children came there just
wasn't enough food and clothing
for the family, and so the hus
band had to give up his comfort
able indoor job and go on driv-
a truck. Only by working over
time could be make enough for
all of them. Then what' dis
tressed the poor woman was
that she rarely saw her husband.
He left early in the morning,
and sometimes had to be away
on the road for several days.
The poor wife suffered without
companionship and love, and the
children also kept wishing that

etery association.
Considerable work was ac
complished at the last clean-up
session, and it is hoped that
when coffee is served at noon,

It tells the story of a couple of
loving youngsters who got mar
ried on a shoe-string. Soon the
young husband was getting more
and more angered at the collect
ors who came every month for
installments on the furniture
and the many other things they
had had to get for their little
apartment. As often happens
with persons who are not really
adult, the lad started taking out
his annoyance on his innocent
little wife. She had had to go to
work as a secretary, and the
husband bitterly resented the
kindnesses that her boss occa
sionally showed her. Finally,
one evening when he wanted a
few dollars which he might per
haps lose at a meeting of his
penny ante poker club, and his
wife had to tell him that she
just could not let him have it
because the next morning a col
lector was due, he blew up and
walked out, saying he had had
all he could stand.
The other day when I came
into my office, I found a nice
looking woman in her thirties
sitting there crying silently.
She, who had been a profession
al singer and who loved music
and excitement of show busi
ness, had married a handsome
man with a good job. But soon
she found that her husband,
when he ' came home at night,
was tired; he wasjjuiet and re
served, with nothing to say. He
read his paper; he looked at tel
evision, and soon he went up
stairs to bed.
As years went by, the situa
tion became more and more in
tolerable to the wife. She so
