Air Force dental service and
the U.S.A. F.
school of avia

a machine
that will take
a picture of all
the teeth with
one panoramic
movement. As
the x-ray
tube behind
the person
maves in one
way, a film
carrier moves at the same rate
in the opposite direction. The
doctors hope that, before long,
a man will walk into a room,
and without even sitting down,
will have his dental pictures
made almost instantly.
As I have said before in this
column, a very hopeful new type
of psychiatry is now coming to
the core, a type in which, in
stead of spinning endless theor
ies ( many of them very silly)
as to why people and especially
psychotic people behave in cer
tain ways, physiologists and
others are studying how the
brain and the nervous system
work, sometimes in simple and
primitive animals.
In a very interesting article
in the April number of the Scien
tific American, Wm. G. van der
Kloot tells how the normal silk
worm waves about as it spins
the cocoon around itself. This
is an intricate process, and as Dr.
van der Kloot says, the study
of how the worm goes at the
problem can tell us much about
the workings of its very simple
type of brain if the few gang
lions in the silkworm's front
end can be called a brain.
Action of Nerve Cells
As he says, beavers build
dams, men build cathedrals, and
silkworms build cocoons, and all
these structures depend pri
marily on the action of nerve
cells. Recently ( as I remember
in the Sicentific American) there
was a marvelous article on the
ways in which spiders can be
uced as test agents for minute
amounts of the new drugs which

spider of a certain species al
ways builds a certain type of net
and with a certain sequence of
movements. Give the spider a
tiny dose of some drug which
affects his brain and he builds
a different kind of a net.
Now, Dr. van der Kloot shows
that if one operates in various
ways on the brain of a silkworm
(incidentally, I hope the anti
vivisectionists do not write me
a lot of nasty letters about this!)

Well now, that's about the
nicest thing that anyone ever
said about him.
the worm makes a botched co
coon. As long as a silkworm has a
brain connected to a few of its
muscles at its front end, these
muscles will drag the rest of the
body through the usual move
ments of spinning and the worm
will do its best to make a nor
mal cocoon. If the brain is com
pletely removed, the worm re
tains its coordination; it can
crawl and climb, but it no long
er attempts to spin a cocoon. If
one hemisphere of the brain is
separated from another, the silk
worm spins silk but it makes a
mat that lies on a flat surface.
By destroying with a very tiny
electric needle various parts of
the little brain, experimenters
have found that at least half of
the brain has nothing to do with
the making of a cocoon. One tiny
area was found to be the most
important one, and damage to
this always produced profound
changes in the spinning beha
vior. This region corresponds to
a similar area in the human
brain trwt is very important to
man.
Curiously, if one plugs up the
little hole through which the
silken thread is extruded the
worm goes through all the mo
tions of making a cocoon, but if
one removes the silk glands sur
gically the worm's movements
are disorganized. Evidently,
there must be a sort of feed-back
from these glands to the brain.
The brain must feel that it is do
ing a good job.
As Dr. van der Kloot says, if
one is to learn something about
the workings of a brain one had
better begin with the simplest
brains ! and not with those of
higher ones in which the number
of nerve tracts runs into the mil
lions. What is remarkable is that
what one learns with the silk
worm immediately throws light
on what happens in man.
