Venereal Diseases
There has been so much hush
hush about venereal diseases
that even educated men do not
always know
that syphilis
and gonorrhea
are two very
different dis
eases; one
that spreads
into many
parts of the
body, and the
other that
stays localized.
So long as
good people had the idea that
the only persons who got ve
nereal diseases were sinners,
they did not want to hear any
thing about the subject. But
then, lovely women: mothers of
sons and daughters, learned that
a high percentage of the persons
who get venereal disease get it
innocently. This, of course, put
a new complexion on the matter
If, as is true, these diseases ac
count for an immense amount of
suffering by innocent women
and children; if they account for
the childless state of millions of
married women and the still
births of millions of infants, the
public should know the facts
Then, perhaps, they will do
something about them. Perhaps
then, they will back up Army
and Navy medical officers when
against the wishes of powerful
gangsters and politicians, they
try to clean out the villages full
of prostitutes that spring up
around a military camp. Unless
the people understand the ter
rible menace of such villages
the Army men may be unable
to do much to protect our boys
Syphilis used to be one of the
great scourges of humanity. It
accounted for an enormoils
amount of illness, a great deal
of insanity, a great deal of injury
to the blood vessels and the
heart, and to unborn children.
Fortunately, today, in civilized
countries, the disease is being
treated so well with penicillin
that we physicians no longer are
seeing so many of the bad end
results, such as we used to. see;
but still there is too much of the
disease in the community.
Infection Often Unknown
The difficulty arises in the
fact that the health officers can
not always get hold of the people
quickly, soon after they are in
fected and before they can infect
others. Unfortunately, hundreds
of thousands of men and par
ticularly women do not know
that they have been infected.
They learn this many years later
and then only accidentally,
when they go for a medical
overhauling.
Today, one danger arises in
the fact that some men have
gained the idea that syphilis can
be cured so quickly that it need
no longer be feared. This is not

of cases in which a cure does
not come quickly, and in which
the person's life can be ruined.
One unfortunate . feature
about syphilis infection is that
so often the offending spirochete
gets into the body without pro
ducing any local ulceration,
such as would tell the person of
his danger. In the old days I
used to see each year many men
past 50 or 60 who, when they
began to walk queerly or to act
queerly, were found to have a
late form of long-dormant syph
ilis. At first they would say
that the wassermann test must
be wrong, and then they would
remember that, in their late
teens, they had a peculiar ulcer
or a puzzling rash with some
awful headaches. Then I might
learn that the man's wife had
had a series of miscarriages, and
eventually, , a still-born or a
sickly child. That was the typi
cal story.
Different Type of Disease
Gonorrhea is an entirely dif
ferent type of disease. It is due
to a germ that attacks the
urethra (tube through which the
urine leaves the bladder). It pro
duces a discharge with much
burning on urination. Often, in
the pre-penicillin days, it left a
stricture of the urinary tube,
and perhaps an inflamed pros
trate gland. In rare cases it pro
duced a form of arthritis. Often
it made the man sterile so that
his wife could never have chil
dren. Often a man, insufficient
ly treated, married and infected
his wife during their honey
moon.vThis left her sterile. In
the old days a large percentage
of hysterectomies were made
necessary by the chronic inflam
mation m the pelvis left by
gonorrhea. Very rarely did gon
orrhea affect the body as a
whole.

diseases which are seen most

Today, in the Armed Forces
every effort is made to protect
from disease the young man
who has exposed himself. If
only he would take reasonable
care, he could escape illness, but
often he gets exposed when he
is under the influence of liquor,
and then he takes no precau
tions. Dr. Alvarez regrets he hasn't
the time in which to read or
answer requests for information.

The State Board of Health
reported that during' the year
there were 10,632 marriages in
the state and 6,002 divorces.
The 1955 marriage total rep
resents a 10 per cent increase
over the previous year while
divorces were down slightly.
Marriage ratio for the state
