Athletic Banquet Held

Lionc club gave their annual
athletic banquet Jast Thursday
evening, honoring 25 Jackson
ville lettermen.
Al Akins, director and football-
coach at Southern Oregon
college, Ashland, was the speak
er, with additional comment and
remarks from Jacksonville stu
dents, their coaches and teach
ers. Miss Margie Edens present
ed two piano solos. The banquet
was held at the Presbyterian
church in Jacksonville.
"Aunt Betty Kirtpatrick" of
Medford is a house guest at the
home of the Ray Wilsons. Mrs.
Kirtpatrick has been ill and will
be cared for by Mrs. Wilson.
Joe McKnight of Medford re
cently began working as main
tenance man at the Jacksonville
museum.
Mrs. Lulu Saulsberry left by
plane Thursday for Oakland,
Calif., to spend this week end
with her son and his wife, Mr.
and Mrs. John M. Saulsbe'rry.
Marcus Sanford, Warrenton,
Ore., visited last week at the
home of his brother, B. J. San
ford and family,' and other rela
tives here.
Mr. and Mrs. Don Sanford, re
cently of Sacramento, Calif.,
moved last week into the house
at First and Fir sts.
Mr. and Mrs. Harlan Rolie of
Corning, Calif., visited at the
home of Mrs. Rolie's parents,
Mr. and Mrs. Lee Hardy, last
week end, and also visited at the
homes of her two brothers, Mr.
and Mrs. Marion Hardy and Mr.
and Mrs. Paul Hardy of Grants
Pass.
Callers at the W. A. Clemmer
home last week were Mr. and
Mrs. Oliver Hanson of Prospect,
and Mrs. Elsie Elrod of Medford
and her daughter, Mrs. Roy
Jackson of Drew, Ore. Mrs.
Jackson visited her father-in-law
at the Mitchell Sanitarium while
she was here.
Mr. and Mrs. Clyde Stewart,
506 South Oregon St., announced
last week they have sold their
home here and will be moving
this week end back to 'Top O'
the Hill' to the home they own
near Ruch. Mr. and Mrs. Rudy
Baysinger of Jacksonville have
purchased the property on South
Third and will move in soon.
Mrs. Emma Burge has rented
the Harry Whitney home and
will run an establishment pro
viding room and board and care
for elderly people.
Mrs. Eva Whitney lasf week
attended funeral services for her
brother, Charles A. Bridwell,
who died suddenly at his hown
in Yreka. He is survived by his
wife, Carrie, and two sisters,
Mrs. Lulu Acklsy, Compton,
Calif., and Mrs. Eva Whitney,
Jacksonville. He was buried in
the Evergreen cemetery at Yre
ka. Other relatives attending the
service were a nephew, Samford
Chapman, Hermiston, Ore., and
two nieces, Thelma Cray, Wal
lowa, Ore., and Agnes Caudle,
Lostine, Ore.
Mrs. Chuck Young drove her
mother, Mrs. Harry Whitney, to
Yreka for the services and
and while there they visited at
the home of Doc. Graham at
Montague, Calif., and other
friends and relatives.
Mrs. O. M. Kesler took her
group of pre-school children to
visit the Jacksonville Museum
one day last week.
Mrs. Zimmerman took a group
of girls from her Scout troop
swimming at the YMCA last Sat
urday as a part of their winter
program. The girls also roller
skate the first Monday of each
month at a time reserved for
Girl Scouts only at the Rogue
Valley Ball room skating rink.
Last Monday evening several
Ruth Rebekah lodge members,
Mrs. Kindred Thomas, Mrs. Lois
Fretwell, Mrs. Jack McDaniels,
Mrs. Lloyd Norman, Mrs.
Charles Le Moine, and Mrs. P. E.
Matheny, attended a friendship
observance meeting at the Olive
Rebekah lodge in Medford.

another past worker to add to
the growing list, Mrs. Lewis Ul
rich, well known Medford per
sonality, revealed in an interest
ing telephone conversation the
history of her duties as Jackson
ville , correspondent about 30
years ago.
At that time Jacksonville was
the county seat and the present
Museum was the county court
house. Mrs. Ulrich gathered the
court items twice a week. Per
sonal items, due to the lack of
telephones and rapid transporta
tion, were collected up and down
the streets of Jacksonville by

Vaughns Planning To Move

daughter Sonda are leaving the
middle of June to make their
home in Napa, Calif., where
Vaughn will be on the faculty
of the Napa Union High school.

ochool at Prospect.
Mrs. Lewis Dusenberry took
a group of students from the
Eagle Point High school to the
lasketball game at Springfield
tiresome "leg work".
According to Mrs. Ulrich, at
that time her husband ran a gro
cery store in Jacksonville known
as the "Ulrich Brothers," located
at the site until recently known
as Ben's Market, and her corres
pondent's pay was used as their
extra "spending money" and
was very welcome indeed.
Mrs. Ulrich also remarked
that she enjoys reading the Jack
sonville items now, as they bring
to mind many of her old friends
and places she remembers from
her past residence here and the
"good old days" when she gath
ered the news for the Mail
Tribune.
Mrs. Ted Greene, formerly of
Jacksonville, now of Blue Lake,
Calif., stopped to visit en route
between Portland and Blue Lake
at the Everett Ravenor home last
week.
Miss Beverly Rogers, who was
a guest at the Carl Hoskins resi
dence last week has returned to
Blackfoot, Ida., via Greyhound
bus.

heartfelt sympathy to Everett
Faber in the tragic death of his
wife Beulah. Both are well
known here as they are mem
bers of , Upper Rogue Grange.
Mr. and Mrs. H. M. Knudsen
of Medford spent the week end
of April 13 at their cabin on
Butte creek and were dinner
guests at "Hardings Paradise"
Aprils 14.
Mrs. Arthur Hume and Mrs.

at the Hume residence April 9
honoring Mrs. Willis Hawkins.

were held in Eugene recently.

returned home after a week's

Mrs. Rick Eastin and two chil
dren spent Easter vacation in
Long Beach, Calif., with rela
tives and Mrs. Minnie Eastin re
turned with them to her home
here.
Jim Sawyer is now5 convalesc
ing at his home after a major
operation in a local hospital.
Mrs. Reed McKay, who was
injured in an auto accident, is
also home from the hospital
where she spent several days.

Dave Pence, father of Mrs.
Roy Vaughan, is quite ill in the
Sacred Heart hospital in Med
ford. Jack Carlton, who has been
attending Bible school in Three
Hills, Alberta, Canada, has re
turned home for the summer
with his wife and .daughter. He
will return to Three Hills in the
fall to complete his studies and
for graduation. Miss Claudia
Ash, who has been a student at
the same place, is also home
with her parents, Mr. and Mrs.
Wayne Ash. ,
Mrs. Margie Smith and daugh
ter Penny are visiting friends in
Clear Lake, Calif.

liver the commencement ad
dress at the College of Idaho
June 2, it was announced Satur
day by President Tom Shearer.
Smith, who took over the Ore
gon governor's chair following
the death of Gov. Paul Patter
son, is a College of Idaho graduate.

had pleaded guilty before Mar
