"I suppose I was stung,"
Frank said, "but I figured I
couldn't go far wrong for $2.50,
even though the coin looked like
genuine brass.
"After all, the guy I got it
from ha been owing me S20
for months, and this way I might
get part of it back."
Frank laid a small gold coin
on tne bar. It was an 1848
quarter eagle and it certainly
had a brassy look. I was about
to say I thought he had been
taken when Frank picked up the
coin and dropped it on the ma
hogany. "It has a good ring," he said,
"which is the main reason that
prompted me to take it."
I turned the coin over. Above
the eagle in the design vere
the letters CAL punched into
the metaL
The piece was genuine all
right. But it was an experi
mental item, one of those struck
off shortly after word of the
California gold strike got back
to Washington.

Some months ago, Larry, a
friend of mine, found one in a
old house he was visiting in Wis

The author was J. J. Methvin,
and the book it had several il
lustrations had been published
at Louisville, Ky., in 1899.
I dipped into it causualy, not
ed that it was marked $3 and
put it back on the shelf, think
ing I could do better with the
money.
"It's the story of Andres
Mariinez, the son of a famous
New Mexico pioneer family,"
the clerk said.
"The poor fellow was captur
ed near Las Vegas in 1866 by
the Mescaleros Indians and sold
to the Kiowas. Their chief adopt
ed him.

The reason for its brassy look
lay in the alloy used. Officials
of the mint were interested in
getting a coin that would wear
and look well, but which would
also have not too much gold in
it.
That latter point as especially
important, because if a S2.50
gold piece had 2.60 worth of
gold in it, the issue would swift
ly go out of circulation via the
melting pot.
Well, the catalogue said this
particular coin had only 888
parts gold, 103 of silver and
four of other metals. That was
what gave it the brassy appear
ance alongside coins of the usual
formula which had 900 parts of
gold and up to 67 of copper.
I showed the passage to Frank.
"Okay," he said. "So it's gen
uine, but what about the CAL?"
"It was put on with'a punch.
Only a few hundred coins were
made with this alloy, and of
course, that's mightly lucky for
you. In other words, a coin of
this kind is worth- about $200.

a nick on them. They terminat
ed in a swept spiral scroll which
was ornamented on both sides
with exquisitely carved buttons.
But the really impressive
thing about the piece, so far as
I was concerner, was the stretch
er holding the four legs steady.
It was of the rare double lyre.
; "My hosts were as aware of
its value as I was, . they said.
One museum had been trying
to get it, and two private col
lectors, also.
" 'We've been offered $2,000
for it, but we're not selling.
Why should we? We want it for
our grandchildren,' they said,
'just as our grandparents did
for us.' "
EXCITING AND SCARCE BOOK

this salesman was a master of
it. The way he talked, I could
feel the desert wind in my ears
and actually smell the cactus.
So I bought the book.
And it was a good buy, far
better than the salesman knew.
For though I didn't enjoy it
as much as he said I would, and
will certainly never read it
again, when I came to sell it
I had a most pleasant surprise.
"How much you going to hold
me up for this time," a dealer
friend said. And before I could
answer, " I won't give you a
cent over $30 for it."
I took the $30. My friend got
$50 for it later, a fair price for
this scarce item.
