Lausche and Johnson No Longer Being
Considered as Presidential Candidates
Washington (U.R) Two un
commonly able Democrats who
are favorite son presidential
candidates in important states
may as well be counted out right
now.
They are Ohio's Gov. Frank
J. Lausche and Texas Sen.
Lyndon B. Johnson. There
never was much chance for
Lausche. anyway, a fact of
which that smart politician is
fully aware.
Lausche is in the dog house
of the nation's union leadership.
His five-time record in being
elected governor of Ohio sug
gests the rank and file of labor
may feel more kindly than the
union leaders toward Lausche.
Vote for Taft
However that may be, . or
ganized labor could and almost
surely would block any effort to
nominate Lausche. The men
who rule the unions and control
t their large political funds ex
i ercise great power in Demo
cratic national conventions.
That should be enough to stop
Lausche. Besides, he confessed
publicly some weeks ago what
most political writers long had
suspected; Lausche had voted for
Sen. Robert A. Taft in 1950 and
against the Democratic senator
ial candidate, Joseph Ferguson.
Lausche laid his 1956 presi
dential candidacy away for good
in Cincinnati this -week. He
told a news questioner that
President Eisenhower's veto of
the farm bill was right and prop-
"He would have compromised
everything noble he has stood
for all his life if he had signed
that bill, which was a bad bill,"
said Lausche. That did it, be
cause the Democratic leadership
is depending in very large part
on the farm bill veto to win
farm votes for their candidates
next November.
The other big Democratic is
sue as of now is Mr. Eisenhow
er's health. The Democratic or
ganization tabs him as a part
time president, almost a play
boy, who has shucked off to sub
ordinates vital responsibilities
which should be his. That may

or may not prove to be a con
trolling issue in this presidential
campaign, but Democratic Na
tional Committee is pushing it
hard.
Johnson Opposed
That is where Johnson fades
from the 1956 presidential pic
ture. As does Lausche in Ohio,
so does Johnson- in Texas stand
as a favorite son Democratic
candidate.
There is one difference.
Lausche is sure of the Ohio dele
gation to the Democratic Na
tional Convention. Johnson is
opposed by Gov. Allan Shivers
who led the Texas bolt to Mr.
Eisenhower in 1952.
Johnson probably is aware
that he has small chance of be
ing nominated in 1956. John
son suffered a heart attack last
year about two months before
Mr. Eisenhower was stricken.
The senator is back on the job
now as Democratic leader and
he is working hard.
Thedssue of Mr. Eisenhower's
health, however, quickly would
cease to be an issue if he Demo
crats nominated JohnsoV, whose
manner of living also must be
controlled by the circumstances
of his health.
Astoria XU.R)--Republicans in
Clatsop county have maintained
a slim lead over Democrats after
close of voter registrations this
week. The county clerk's office
said tabulations completed so far
show 6963 registered. Republi
cans and 6720 Democrats, a mar
gin of 245.

Drivers Aged 15-24 Lead Accident Lisf

to 24 years old had more traffic
accidents than any other age
I roup in Oregon last year, the
traffic safety division has re
ported. But drivers in the 30-39 age
group ran a close second for
most frequent accident involve
ment. Of the 116,677 drivers in
volved in 1955 traffic accidents,
24.833 were under 25 while 23,
997 drivers were between 30
and 39.
Fatal smash-ups involved 124
drivers under 25 and 121 in the
30-39 age span.
The safety division pointed
out that the figures did not
prove 'that teen-agers and driv
ers 30-39 were the worst on the
road. It might indicate only
that there were more drivers in
those age groups.

still using a steam engine in
stalled in 1894 to run an ele
vator, generate electricity and
run a coffee grinder. The orig
inal belt is still being used on
the engine, and the manufactur
er has requested it as a souvenir
if it ever wears out.
