even Greta Garbo as the hardest
person to see in Hollywood.

Aline Mosby "realistic" act
ing lessons at Marlon Brando's
alma mater, the Actors' Studio
in New York. She became a pro
ducer and acquired intellectual
friends.
But to find out whether la
Monroe has changed is tougher
than wangling a front seat at
Grace Kelly's wedding. Marilyn
has been in and out of a sick
.bed, reminiscent of Judy Gar
land s ailments on "A Star Is
Born.' And when she is well
enough to act on her movie set,
as on the day I dropped in, she
is shielded by her new-found
aides.
."She can't be interviewed on
the set," explained famed
Broadway director Josh Logan,
picked by Marilyn to guide her
through her come-back film.
Mind Cleared
"We have to get a perform
ance," he said. "I can't have her
thinking of anything else before
the scene. And we have an im
portant close-up next." '
While Marilyn rested in her
closed dressing room, I asked
her co-workers whether she had
changed.
"She has more peace of mind
than before," Logan reflected
"When she was frightened and
insecure, her talent didn't come
out. Now she is more secure
because of her position in the
world. She is one of the greatest
talents I've ever seen."
Marilyn plays a dumb, tawdry
blonde in "Bus Stop" the same
type of easy part she fled from
18 months ago. But Logan and
Paula Strasberg, Marilyn s
drama coach imported from the
Actors' Studio, insist the role
from the hit play is "rich and
detailed."

Actress Emerges
At last Marilyn was hustled
from her dressing room for her
scene. Mrs. Strasberg stood be
hind the set to make notes. Pho
tographer Greene whipped out
his camera. Logan barked in
structions.
i Marilyn looked thinner. She
wore little make-up. The flam'
buoyant hair-do and huge mouth
were gone. She looked almost
like a little girl. She wore a
tight black satin skirt and the
highest heels in history and
played the entire scene upside
down-slung over the shoulder of
her leading man, Don Murray.
Marilyn's speech consisted of
exactly two words in a Texas
accent "Ah do."
Then the star was hustled back
to her dressing room.
"Nobody can see Marilyn,"
sighed one studio worker. "Some
times not even Logan. Why,
Buddy Adler (the studio head)
flew to the Idaho location and
only got to talk to her for a
minute through her dressing
room window."

A RESOLUTION proposing to per
mit adjacent property to use a-water
main as a lateral water main: to levy
an assessment on the property front
ing on the streets wherein said water
main is laid: setting a time and place
for protests thereto and providing for
notice thereof.
WHEREAS the City of Medford has
heretofore caused a water main in
the City of Medford to be laid on
Biddle Road from Jackson Street to a
point 651 feet North, and the Council
being of the opinion that said water
main may be used by the property
fronting on that portion c said main
on Biddle Road from Jackson Street
to a point 651 feet North, in the City
of Medford. Oregon, and
WHEREAS, said water main has not.
as yet. been paid for and it appearing
to the Council that the use of said
water main as a lateral water main
by said property last above mentioned
will not materially interfere with the
use thereof for the purpose for which
it was originally laid, now therefore.
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUN
CIL OF THE CITY OF MEDFORD.
OREGON
Section 1. That it is the opinion of
the Council that that part of the
aforementioned water main laid In the
City of Medford described as follows.
I to-wit:
As laid on Biddle Road from Jack
son Street to a point 651 feet North
in the City of Medford, Oregon.
May be used by the property front
ing thereon as a lateral water main
without materially interferring with
the use thereof for the purpose of a
water main, the purpose for which it
was originally laid, and the Council
proposes to permit the owners of adja
cent property to use the same for
lateral purposes as aforesaid.
Section 2. It is the intention of the
Council to assess the property front
ing on the streets wherein said water
main is laid as hereinbefore last de
scribed its proportionate share of so
much of the cost thereof as equals
the special benefit which will result
to said property from the use of said

of such size as would be required to
supply the property fronting on said
streets in case said water main was
not so used and the Council has and
does hereby determine that the sum
of $2.25 per front foot is the amount
of such special benefit and the pro
portionate cost of such a lateral water
main to such property as aforesaid
and intends to assess said amount
against such adjacent property on ac
count thereof.
Section 3. The Council will meet at
the hour of 730 o'clock P.M., at the
Council Chamber in the City Hall on
the 1st day of May, 1956, at which
time and place all protests of said
assessment, as hereinbefore provided
for, will be heard.
Section 4. The Recorder Is hereby
directed to serve notice hereof upon
the property owners aforesaid by pub
lishing this resolution 3 times in a
newspaper published and of general
circulation in said City and by posting
the same in 5 public places in said
City; said publication and said posting
to be not less than 10 days before
the date of said meeting.
Passed by the Council and signed
by me in authentication of its pas
sage this 17th day of April, 1856.

day that a husband may have to
pay support to his estranged
wife but not to her cats.
James Lauritsen, 39, has been
ordered to pay his wife $45 a
week support, $10 of which was
for the care of her five cats.
Judge Hershenson said the cats
could look out for themselves
and cut the payments to $35.
