Help in Middle East

President Eisenhower welcome's
Russia's offer to help solve the
Mid-East crisis, if it "demon
strates a real desire" by Moscow
to backing U.N. peace efforts.
The Soviet Foreign Ministry
yesterday announced that Russia
was offering to support a settle
ment of the Arab-Israeli con
flict. Murray Snyder, assistant
White House press secretary,
laid in response to questions that
the Eisenhower administration
"is of course still studying the
Soviet statement but if it dem
onstrates a real desire and de
termined nature on the part of
the Soviet Union to back the
U.N.'s effort, the President wel
comes its support."

Council Authorizes Flans for
Paving Work, Sewer Proiects
The Medford city council last
night adopted ordinances au
thorizing plans and specifica
tions for tnree paving projects,
anH rprpivprl nptitions for two
other projects.
Plans and specifications were
authorized for paving on East
Second st. between North Front
st. and North Central ave., and
on South Modoc ave. between
East Main st. and Woodlawn dr.,
and on Niantic st. between Ed
wards st. and Maple st. The peti
tion for Niantic st. paving was
signed by 52.14 per cent of the
property owners, according to
city officials.
Request Paving
Petitions were received re
questing paving on Kenwood
ave. betwen Humphry st. and
West Second st. and on Fairmont
st. between Summit ave. and the
east end of the present dedicat
ed street.
Mayor Earl Miller reported
that 59.24 per cent of the prop
erty owners had signed the Ken-

Ordinances also were passed
adopting plans and specifica
tions for construction of a sani
tary sewer in blocks four and
five in the Highcroft addition,
and hearing on the project was
set for May 15.
An ordinance was adopted
authorizing a sanitary sewer
project in an area bounded by
Capital ave. on the north, Valley
View dr. on the east, the north
boundary line of Valley View
subdivision on the south and
Sunrise ave. on the west not
now served with sewer. The
council also authorized a call
for bids on the project. No one
appeared to object at a public
hearing last night.
Assessment Ordinance
An ordinance levying 84 as
sessments for water main instal
lations in the recently annexed
Laurelhurst addition also was
adopted. The cost per linear
foot of frontage to be assessed
is $2.14 according to City Mana
ger Robert Duff.
The council called a public
hearing May 15 on annexation
of two lots on Murray st. at Co
lumbus ave., and other property
in the area. The other property
includes Columbus ave., to the
north line of the alley, north of
block eight, West Side Heights
addition two; Murray st. from
Columbus ave. to the west
boundary of West Side Heights
addition two; and the alley
north of block eight from Co
lumbus ave. to the west bound
ary of West Side Heights addi
tion two.
Duff pointed out that the
property, except the two lots, is
presently city -owned, but out
side the city limits. The streets
and alley cannot be dedicated
to public use unless annexed
first, he pointed out. The coun
cil authorized Mayor Miller to
represent the city in annexation
proceedings since the city owns
property involved.
Finance Committee
The council adopted a recom
mendation of the finance com
mittee to levy assessments on a
per square foot basis in block
four of Highcroft addition, and
on a per lot basis in block five.
Both are for sanitary sewer im
provements. The committee
pointed out that the per square
foot basis appeared to be more
equitable because 6nly three
lots were involved, and that in
block five, the per lot basis more
equitable because the lots are
almost the same size.

County Disaster Car group that
a site beside the East Side Fire
station be made available for
housing the car was denied by
the council. The planning com
mission recommended that the
request be granted.
Councilmen pointed out that
should the Disaster Car be
housed at the site, the property
would have to be rezoned, and
that residents may believe the
Disaster Car is' operated by the
fire department. Members of
the council pointed out that the
Car is not connected with the
fire department.
To Prepare Ordinance
The council authorized City
Attorney Frank Farrell to pre
pare an ordinance calling for a
hearing on vacation of a north
south alley in the Edwards place
addition. Vacation of the alley
was recommended by the plan
ning commission.
Action on a planning commis
sion recommendation that an
agriculture ordinance be adopt
ed was deferred until a later
meeting, as was action on a rec
ommendation of vacating 55 feet
of Marshall ave. through Gar
field subdivision.
A no parking zone on the west
side of Riverside ave. 75 feet
south of Jackson st. was ap
proved, and three one-hour
parking meters were replaced
in front of the old Jackson
County Chamber of Commerce
office on South Riverside ave.
No parking between 4:30 and 6
p.m. was approved for the three
places to facilitate right turn
traffic movements.
, . The council authorized a
crosswalk across Sixth st. in
front of the YMCA, where a
blinker light will be installed,
and granted two-hour ' parking
in six places on South Riverside
ave. two each in front of Tabu
restaurant, in front of Lusk
Piano house and in front of
Barco Chemical Supply com
pany. Duff pointed out that the
spaces are usually occupied with
all-day parkers.
