a dog. Often a
doctor is sum
moned in great
haste, but us
usally, by the

ened by the peculiar symptoms
that have come because of the
rapid breathing. The family will
think the patient had a heart at
tack, but he did not.
Usually the person feels faint
and giddy, and for a few min
utes he may be a little fuzzy in
his thinking. He may feel un
real, and he may black out. He
may feel numbness of the body
and much tingling around the
mouth, with perhaps a coldness
of the hands and of the lips.
There may be spasm of the mus
cles of the hands, with twitch
ing movements, and there may
be a sense of tightness in the
chest and a desire to yawn.
There may be palpitations, a
rapid heart beat or skipping
beats, and perhaps some transi
tory pains in the chest. The
mouth may get dry, there may
be a feeling of a lump in the
neck and the abdomen may
bloat. The patient may belch
and pass much gas from the
bowl. He may be anxious, tense
and apprehensive. For a while
after a spell he may feel tired
and weak or exhausted.
Will Often Stop on Order
Some of the symptoms of one
of these spells are due to the
washing of much carbon dioxide
(the gas in-soda water) out of
the blood. Often, if the physician
sharply orders the patient to
stop the panting, he will. Then,
as the breathing becomes nor
mal the chemical composition of
the blood will return to normal,
and the symptoms of lack of
carbon dioxide will go away.
The family must never get
frightened at sight of such a
spell because it is hysterical in
nature; it is not due to any seri
ous disease, and the patient will
not die.
If a woman gets these spells
often, and wants to help herself,
she can either make herself

of a national furor in 1939 when
it refused to rent Constitution
hall for an Easter Sunday con
cert by the Negro singer. She

The President's so-called vaca
tion in Augusta, Ga., last week
was hardly that. He put in long
hours in his tiny office on the
second floor of the Augusta Na
tional Golf club professional
shop, working on the speeches
he has scheduled for this week.
Before he went to church Sun
day morning, he went to his of
fice for another session on the
speech he is to deliver tonight to
a major Republican meeting
here.
The President has been criti
cized frequently by some quar
ters of the Democratic party for
spending a good bit of his leisure
time with some of the wealthiest
men in America.
He does not regard this as
any cause for criticism or appre
hension. He thinks that a man
who has reached the top of one
