Protest About Food
Ashland A group of about
50 male students at Southern
Oregon college last Thursday
evening burned a "milk bot
tle" in effigy, then chanted,
"We want more milk."
The men, all dressed in
white sheets, burned the six
foot effigy in front of Susanna
Homes hall, where meals are
served. The giant-sized bottle
bore the inscription, "Seris
Milk from Discontented
Cows."
Chuck Weir, past president
of the men's dorm, said the
effigy burning was apparently
a move to express general dis
content with the dining serv
ice in Susanna Homes halL

The New Wonder Drugs
Most persons who are suffer
ing from nervousness or ner
vous tension or symptoms of a
mild psychosis
nowadays' get
treated with
one or two or
three of the so
called wonder
drugs. The sale
of these has
been enormous
and recently
saw in Time

the strenuous life, one of these
new drugs is so greatly in de.
mand that druggists have to ra
tion fhe few thousand tablets
thev can get each week.
I have seen a few miracles
from using these drugs but, us
ually with the dose advised for
patients not being watched in a
hospital, the results obtained
were not striking. In some cases
the patient got such an uncom
fortable reaction after taking a
few pills that he wouldn't take
any more. This, of course, is the
story of most drugs. Some per
sons get a wonderful result;
some cannot be sure they were
helped; and a few react badly
One of the drugs has to be
used with some care because an
occasional person taking it soon
becomes jaundiced. Fortunately,
the jaundice seems rarely to be
of a bad type, and so far as I
know, it goes away of itself,
without leaving any measurable
damage to the liver. So far this
jaundice has attacked only one
of my patients. Another of these
much-used drugs sometimes pro
duces symptoms of so-called
Parkinson's disease, in which
there is a poker face and marked
tremor of one or both hands.
Doubtless, in most cases, the
failure of us physicians to get
results with these new drugs is
due to the fact that we prescribe
only the recommended, usually
safe dosage. Today, in mental
hospitals they give enormous
doses of these drugs. Apparent
ly, most of the patients tolerate
such over-dosage.
Drugs May Calm Patient
When a man in a mental hos
pital is violent, large amounts of
one of these drugs may calm
him down to the point where he
no longer is dangerous; he be
comes reasonable so that the at
tendants and doctors can talk to
him and influence his behavior.
He may get so well that he can
go home.
The great advantage of these
new drugs is that they can calm
a nervous tension without neces
sarily making the persbns
sleepy. Actually in many of the
cases in which I have used the

after treatment Sunday night
following an automobile acci
dent near Bear Creek orchards.
The car, operated by Iona Rae
Wiltgen, was traveling south on
Highway 99 at about 6:45 p.m.,
when it went out of control,
jumped a curb and hit a tele
phone pole, state police reported.
Meriden, Conn. (U.R Super
ior Court Judge John P. Cotter
held an all-day conference with
several attorneys, then an
nounced that the entire day's
court aocKet naa Deen settled
out of court. Said Cotter: "We
could settle a lot more cases out
of court if we had more time
to negotiate."

drugs, the person did get more
sleepy than he cared to be.
What is to be hoped and ex
pected is that in the next few
years many more of these tension-removing
drugs will be
synthesized in chemical labora
tories. Already I hear of a new
one, the action of which is said
to be almost free from unpleas
ant side effects.
The thing that everyone
should know about the new
modern synthetic drugs is that
many of them are potentially
dangerous because they act by
weakening some important
chemical reaction in the body or
they combat the actions of cer
tain nerves. When, in the cases
of highly sensitive persons, the
drugs overdo this job the per
son can become . much upset.
When that happens he (or she)
must immediately stop the use
of the drug. Later, he can dis
cuss with his doctor the wisdom
or unwisdom of trying to take It
again. What I fear always is that
one of my patients will go on
taking a medicine I prescribed
long after it has begun to
make him dangerously ill.
I will never forget a man
whose life was saved only be
cause his doctor, to whom he
was devoted, died. The doctor
had prescribed a drug which we
now rarely use because it occa
sionally produced jaundice with
a fatal destruction of the liver.
When the patient I saw turned
yellow he could not consult his
doctor because the doctor was
dying. Because the patient did
not suspect that his jaundice was
due to the drug he was taking,
he went on swallowing three or
four pills a day. Only when his
doctor died did he come to me.

What is the moral? Never go
on taking a medicine long after
it has either done its work or
else has shown that it is not go
ing to produce any effect. When
ever a strange illness comes,
stop the taking of all drugs and
see what happens. I remember
a woman whose hair started to
come out in handfuls. On her
own hook, she had been taking
enormous doses of a certain Yita
min. Other patients of mine with
diarrhea or abdominal cramps
