they could best express thanks
to the American people.
Mice Get Cancer
From Smog Elements
Los Angeles (U.R) A Uni
versity of Southern California
scientist has produced lung
cancer in mice by forcing the
animals to breathe elements con
tained in smog, the American
Cancer Society reported Satur
day. Dr. Paul Kotin placed mice
In an atmosphere contaminated
by oxidized hydrocarbons, com
mon elements found in gasoline,
diesel oil and plastics.
After 40 weeks, 63 per cent
of the mice living in polluted
air developed lung cancer, the
doctor found. Only 21 per cent
of the mice which lived in
washed air had cancer in the
same period.
Dr. Kotin's findings, the
American Cancer Society said,
suggests that precautions must
be taken against unnecessary ex
posure to chemicals in polluted

Three-Day Pass Not
So Lucky On 13fh
' Seoul, Korea (U.R) Special
ist 3-C James W. Hart, Denver,
Colo., considered it was his lucky
day when he got a three-day pass
beginning Friday the 13th.
He soon changed his mind.
The only vehicle on which he
could hitch a ride into Seoul
was a garbage truck, and he had
to sit on a pile of garbage.
Jumping down from the truck
he turned his ankle and rolled
in a mud puddle.
When he went to buy lunch
for himself and a friend, he
found he had lost his wallet.
He tried to call his girl friend
back home and after a four-hour
wait learned she was not home.
There was only one bright
spot. After an agonizing search,
he found the wallet and the
$84.60 with which he had plan
ned to finance his three days In

100-YEAR-OLD GROCERY BILL One hundred years ago

Does you wife belong to a
"discussion group" made up of
her feminine friends? What do
they discuss? I have heard from
such a group. Am informed the
subject of their next discussion
will be Grace Kelly. The ladies
want me to suggest some things
to discuss. , Practically every
thing that can be publicly said
about Miss Kelly has already
been printed. Still perhaps these
ladies don't know Grace was

Grace on the stroke of 12, last

fact that this year is the 100th

Among the Married
Are you, by any chance ex
pecting a new arrival around
the early part of July? How
would you like your child to be
born on the Fourth of July? It
can be arranged. Or, so claims
a New Yorker, who says she
arranged to have her most re
cent child born on St. Valen
tine's Day. This was accom
plished by the use of a new
"miracle" drug which makes a
birth possible on a desired day.
Young mother referred to says
the delivery' of her "baby by
appointment" took 55 minutes.
That was much less than the
births of her other two chil
dren took. The new arrival is
a sturdy boy weighing in at
birth at seven pounds eight
ounces. His birthday being St.
Valentine's Day, will be easy in
his adult years for his wife to
remember. So, if you want your
next child to have the same
kind of break arrange for the
birth to come on the Fourth of
July, Christmas, New Year's
Day, St. Valentine's Day, Wash
ington's birthday, Fourth of
July or some other easily re
membered date.

Standing Ovation
At Raleigh Show
Raleigh, N.C. (U.R) Negro
singer Nat King Cole received a
standing ovation instead of
rough treatment Friday night
when he sang to a mixed audi
ence in this southern city.
Cole, who was attacked on the
stage during his performance
before an all-white audience in
Birmingham, Ala., last Tuesday
night was elated over the warm
treatment in Raleigh.
Thunderous applause greeted
Cole' when he appeared on the
stage of Municipal auditorium.
The large white audience rose
when he appeared and received
each of his numbers enthusias
tically. Tickets for the comeback con
cert, the first since Cole's beat
ing Tuesday night in Birming
ham, had been sold in segre
gated blocks but color lines
melted as the audience moved
up to the best seats in the partially-filled
auditorium.
Cole said he was touring the
south as a "performer" and not
as a "politician" and said he
was "crusading as a gentleman."
The trial of four of the six
white men accused in his .beat
ing began Friday in Birmingham
and was recessed until Monday
after testimony by a policeman.
Also in Birmingham, the
brother ot White Citizens Coun
cil Chief Asa E. Carter an
nounced he was raising a "white
people's defense fund" to pay at
torney fees for the six.
