this session on a bill to authorize i

method if necessary.
The people of the country, he

The proposed dam would be

Rise of Zhukov
Studied Closely
By State Officials
Washington (U.R) The steady
rise of Marshal Georgi Zhukov
in the Kremlin's tight inner cir
cle is getting close study at the
State Department, it was dis
closed today.
The impact of Zhukov's as
cension, Stalin's downgrading
and other dramatic shifts in
Soviet policies are being re
viewed with U.S. Ambassador
to Moscow Charles E. Bohlen.
The veteran diplomat arrived
home Sunday and is expected
to be here at least another week.
Elected to Presidium
Zhukov, wartime friend of
President Eisenhower, was elect
ed an alternate member of the
Presidium of the Central Com
mittee of the Communist Party
at the recent party Congress in
Moscow. Zhukov is the first
professional military man to
reach this exalted party status.
There is evidence that he should
be regarded as a full member
of the Presidium along with
Khrushchev, Bulganin and nine
other full Presidium members.
Getting Attention
Zhukov and the Soviet Army
have been getting more atten
tion inside Russia since Stalin
died three years ago. They are
being decorated more. The army
has a new respect that has risen
as fear of the secret police has
fallen off.
There is new evidence and
information indicating that Zhu
kov and the army played key
roles in the arrest of Police
Chief Lavrenti Beria in 1953
following Stalin's death.
Russian experts believe that
Zhukov, who was virtually ex
iled under Stalin, is being "paid
off" by Moscow's new rulers j
for his role in controlling the :
Soviet army and helping dispose
of Beria, Stalin's feared hench
man.
