are due to the premature birth
of the child. Premature birth is
one of the 10 leading causes of
death among the whole popula
tion. Naturally, the first problem
is, what to do to help the mother
to carry her infant to term, and
the second is, what to do to keep
a 2 or 3 pound baby alive after
he or she is born.
Today, the city health depart
ment that would like to lower
its infant death-rate must grap
ple with these problems of pre
mature birth. There are some
mothers, many of them frail and
underprivileged, who keep los
ing one premature child after
another. Unfortunately, too
little is known about the causes
of premature birth, and too little
is known about what can be

ber of physical imperfections
that make it impossible for it
to live. The older the mother
is, between the ages of 43 and
50, the more likely she is to
bear a child who cannot live.
One great difficulty with the
premature infant is that its tis
sues are so delicate. They can
not stand up to the strains of
life. Many premature children,
also, have lungs which are de
fective, and cannot aerate the
blood. For a while, it was
thought that the answer to many
of the problems was to keep the
premature infant in an atmos
phere rich in oxygen, but soon
it was found that this can cause
hopeless blindness. Fortunately,
today, health officers, obstetric
ians and pediatricians are grap
pling with the problems of pre
mature birth.

should be sprayed or dusted
when 2 j to 35 per cent of the
blossoms are open.
Where blight has been a prob
