Curves Slow Curvaceous Sophia toren;
Gloria Swanson Dislikes Auto Rally
By GLORIA SWANSON
Written for United Press
San Remo, Italy (U.R) This
charming little town on the
Italian Riviera was the scene of
this year's cinema auto rally, an
autorace in which the drivers are
Italian film personalities.
Ordinarily the rally would
have finished during the film
festival at Cannes, 33 miles west
of Monte Carlo, but the festival
was postponed this year to fall
after the Grace Kelly wedding.
Sophia Loren, a contestant in
the rally, laughingly confessed to
me that she had finished last.
When I asked her why, she said
she had to slow down on the
curves.
It seems the windshield and
windows of her car were broken
by eager fans along the route.
She couldn't show us any ev
idence of black and blue spots
from pinches, though because
her dress fits her like a doeskin.
With her it isn't a question of
Wearing or not wearing a dress.
Actually, she could get the same
effect if she just wore a thick
coat of paint.
Point of View
From a man's point of view,
better known as angle, it is the
statuesque body beautiful. But
from a short woman's view, I
can say I've got what she's got
only mine isn't pulled in and"
stretched out in such obvious
curves.
Rossano Brazzi was a con
testant, too, but he wasn't brag
ging about how he finished.
Albert Sordi, who played "My
Son Nero" in the movie of the
same name, won.
Though I had been invited to
drive in the rally, for me it prob
ably would have been less event
ful and hazardous than my trip
from Monte Carlo. The car that
came to fetch me broke down.
My maid had to remain at the
border for lack of papers. A
'friend with a tiny jalopy kindly
rescued me.
Some Abuse
Since I didn't appear in a
beautiful car with official num
bers my friend and I were being
abused and shouted at by police
and populace alike, especially
when we unknowingly got on
the course where the contestants
were vying for speed records.
Shrieking and waving us aside,
they sped by.
But my driving friend seemed
to want to get into the act. When
a car swerved at 80 miles an
hour to avoid hitting us and
pedestrians flew in all direc
tions under their own steam, I
said like Garbo, "I want to go
home."

' But the affable, handsome
actor had one last observation
on the situation after headlines
appeared on the Jeanne Crain
Paul Brinkman break. Miss Crain
hired the same attorney, as did
Barker's ex-mate, Susan Hay
ward. ,
"They'll do the same thing to
him they did to me," he said
sadly. "And Jeanne has four
children. . ."
Barker in Demand
Now that Barker has cleared
up his personal life he's back in
demand in Hollywood. He ap
pears on NBC's Emmy Award
winning daytime color television
drama, "Matinee Theater," ina
drama with Diana Lynn. He said
he was grateful to producer
Albert McCleery for giving him
the comeback role.
"This show is an actors'
dream," he said enthusiastically
as he waited for a rehearsal. "All
those closeups! Many actors are
nervous about this program, but
I think it's great.
"Yes, things are better for me
now and some other offers are
coming up" But I did well before
all this happened. I've been an
actor for 20 years, you know.
And a lot of people don't know
I came from the stage."
Pockets Empty
Barker confessed in a recent
court appearance for a paternity
suit brought by actress Yvonne
Doughty that he had only a
couple of dollars in his pocket.
Today the actor cheerfully de
clared that his future plans in
clude "to keep working." Cur
rently he's living with friends
and "trying to collect more than
five thousand bucks people owe
me around town."
"I am open to stage, screen or
TV ideas," he said with a grin.
And future romantic plans?
"I don't go out with anyone
in particular," Barker said
firmly. "No, I haven't sworn off
women. Who can do that? But I
can't say anything about future
marriages I'm still legally
married as there has been no
final decree."

FHA Order Halting
Home Construction
Becomes Effective'
Portland . (U.R) A Federal
Housing Administration order
halting FHA insured home con
struction went into effect yes
terday. Portland home builders met
with FHA officials and received
official notice that inspectors
were in the field under orders
to reject every house at which
34-inch instead of 2532-inch size
boards were being used.
In Washington, D. C. Sen.
Wayne Morse said he was told
by an FHA official that "this
is a minor matter ..." He said,
however, that he was interven
ing with the FHA and that it
might be a subject for investi

Committee.
Might Stop Construction
An FHA official said the ac
tion might virtually stop home
construction "if it lasts long
enough for our inspectors to
reach all houses under construc
tion." Field directors of the FHA re
ceived notices late Tuesday that
