As We Live
By ELIZABETH H UNLOCK. H D
Help Minimize Sacrifices
In Husband's Job Change
No one should be called upjn
to make sacrifices indefinitely.
However, temporary sacrifices,
when it is evident they will lead
to better things, are worthwhile.
(Q) "My husband has a good
job which pays well but he says
t
- S lure 10 II. ns
has been offer
ed a job with
another com
pany which is
opening an of
fice in our
c o m m u n ity.
He will not be
paid as well at
first as he now
Dr. Hurlock
is. but he says he will make much
more money in the long run
if he makes good in this work.
He is very anxious to make the
change but 1 have opposed it
because it will mean less money
for a year or so. and this will
mean we will have to cut down
on what we have been used to
having. Also, he will get no vaca
tion this summer and we will
have to stay home. Another
thing that bothers me is his
hours will be longer and he
will have to work on Saturdays
until the new business gets a
good start. 1 wonder if I am be
ing unfair to him by opposing
the change. I would like your
advice on this matter." L.S.
(A) I am sure your husband
has investigated the possibilities
the new job offers very care
fully and knows what sort of
company he would be associat
ed with. If he is satisfied this
new job will offer a brighter
future than he now has, I think
you should urge him to take
the new job.
A person cannot be happy in
work where he feels there :is a
ceiling over his head which will
keep him from making the pro
gress he is capable of. Your
husband will be looking for a
better job and this will decrease
his efficiency in his present
work and increase his dissatis
faction. Most people must make tem
porary sacrifices when the
breadwinner of the family shifts
from one job to another. If
they do not have to live on less
money, it may mean moving to
another community or giving up
the annual vacation for that
year, or working overtime.
If your husband is willing to
make these sacrifices and is con
vinced they are worthwhile, go
along with him in a cheerful
manner and let him see you are
with him. Your cheerfulness
will go a long way toward tak
ing the sting out of the sacrifices
he must make.

Talkative Women
Have Longer Life
Detroit (U.R Just keep talk
ing away, lady, it may lengthen
your life. '
A knack for gossiping away
"repressed hostility" is one rea
son women live longer than
men, according to Dr. Ira M.
Altshuler.
"The American male goes
soon and silent to his grave be
cause he keeps his big mouth
shut when he ought to be letting
off steam," the Detroit psychia
trist said.
What's more, he said, women
have an easier time of it in life
because men work like crazy
trying to keep them happy.
"Clothing and furniture manu
facturers, finance companies
they're all out to make the little
woman happy at the expense of
her husband's wallet, and at the
expense of his longevity," he
said.
"Even the auto industry has
caught on," he said. "It's not the
road performance or the gasoline
mileage that counts. What sells
a new car is how well it matches
milady's new spring coat."
The rest of America's eco
nomic system puts the frosting
on milady's ego, he said.
"When the ego is satisfied, the
lady lives longer," he said.
Warning Issued Against
Repeated Meter Feeding
Motorists who park vehicles
in parking spaces for longer
than the maximum time desig
nated by the meter were warn
ed by Police Chief Charles
Champlin.
He said violators are liable
for $2.50 fines. The police de
partment has received com
plaints that part of the down
town parking problem is due
to car owners who repeatedly
feed meters and monopolize
parking spaces.
