ment department was moved out.
Hubbard Brothers has been in
its present location since 1898.
The establishment's only major
change in recent years was the
addition of a downstairs house
ware'section in 1951.
The anniversary sale will con

Camp Materializes
A mile or so away by snow
mobile the DEW Line construc
tion camp materializes, quonsets
with smoke puffing from over
heated interiors, shacks fashion
ed from packing crates, a plastic
work tent slung over steel-pipe
frame. On a nearby rise stand
a prefabricated permanent struc
tures where civilians manning
the far northern radar warning
line will live and work.
This camp is larger than most
but otherwise typical of dozens
that stretch for 3000 miles across
the continent's Arctic rim where
the Distant Early Warning Line
is being strung to give four to
six hours notice of Russian jejt
bomber attack.
Randolph B. Wills, Fort
Worth, Tex., a Western Electric
Co. DEW Line construction in
spector, takes you on a tour
of this station on Victoria Island,
which is shielded from the Arctic
Ocean to the west by Banks
Island.
Efficiency Impaired
You learn that man's work
ing efficiency is impaired in the
Arctic by subzero cold, occasion
al 100 mile an hour winds, eye
searing sun making heavy gog
gles advisable, burdensome
weights of clothing. This land is'
for hardy, stable characters
trained to do many tasks, not
the least of which is plain sur
viving. You don't beat the Arc
tic; you learn to live with it
as the Canadian Mounted Police,
trappers and missionaries have
done.
