Dior's Advisor Praises
Figures of American Women
By ROBERT AHIER
United Press Correspondent
Paris (U.R) One of Europe's
top feminine fashion authorities
iayg her continental coun
terparts should take a style les
son from American women.
"Women in the United Statse
lead the world in the attention
they give their figures," said
Mme. Henri Bonnet, wife of the
former French ambassador to
the United States and newly
named top advisor to designer
Christian Dior.
"No other group of women
she said. "That's true too of the
middle and working classes. In
this connection, European wom
en have a lot to learn from their
American sisters."
Mme. Bonnet, who peren
nially is on the various lists of
best dressed women, also had
gome advice for American wom
en as she set about her new job.
Must Be Adapted
Don't let the slim Paris models
and some local extremities scare
you away from French fash
ions," she said. "In fashion, a
model is a very valuable thing.
but it can and, generally must
be adapted to each individual
woman."
Very often, Mme. Bonnet ad
ded, her American friends tell
her a certain model is not for
them because the skirt is too
slim or the neckline too plung
ing. "Any dress must be tried out
first on a person who is standing,
and then on the same person
seated. Then one can determine
if the skirt is really too narrow
or the neckline too daring," she
explained.
Asked what advice she would
give her new boss, Mme. Bonnet
commented.
"It is impossible to give advice
to a man like Dior, who has his
own ideas in everything.
10 Points
"I will try to relay to him the
American women's desire for
dresses that are easily wearable
. . . and place the figure in the
best light possible."
A 10-ppint chart for dress
which she prepared some years
ago still holds good, she said. It
goes like this.
1. Don't shop for the sake of
shopping; buy what you need.
2. Buy what's becoming to
you. Don't buy a dress because
it looks good on a friend.
3. Don't follow fashion dic
tates blindly; extreme ideas date
quickly.
4. Be discreet with jewelry.
5. Slim down to accepted pro
portions if you're overweight.
6. Accentuate your good
points.
7. Avoid flowered hats with
furs; furs are rich enough alone
8. Adapt your clothes to your
way of life; understate by day,
be regal by night.
9. Take the best possible care
of your clothes.
10. Pick accessories with the
greatest care.

Engineering 1
Said Field
For Women
Corvallis More women
should take engineering in col
lege to meet the demand for
their sex in industry, believes
George W. Gleeson, dean of en
gineering at Oregon State col
lege. Industry wants the feminine
viewpoint, the dean says. In
such fields as civil, mechanical
and electrical engineering, com
panies design many of their pro
ducts to appeal to women. And
engineering - trained women are
always in demand, he adds, as
technical librarians, editors of
technical brochures and maga
zines and as secretaries in en
gineering firms. Backing up this
need is a nationwide shortage of
both men and women engineers.
The Oregon State school of
engineering is one of the accred
ited engineering colleges in the
United States that has admit
ted women. But in the history of
the school at OSC, only 93
women have enrolled. Less than
a dozen of them have continued
on to graduate. Other schools
find the situation much the
same.
It is more difficult for a wom
an than for a man in this field,
the dean acknowledges. There
are no special provisions made
for women engineers at OSC
and they are far outnumbered
by men. This winter term, for
example, the engineering school
which has the highest enroll
ment of any school on campus
lists 1233 students, of which
only four are women. Coeds
work alongside men in labora
tories, in the field and at the
drawing board.
What phase of engineering
should a girl take in college?
Gleeson says there are oppor
tunities in every field. However,
he believes the most openings
for women today are in civil
engineering, with emphasis on
architecture; mechanical engin
eering, particularly in heating
and ventilating; and chemical
engineering.
The student at OSC has a
choice of six branches of engin
eering agricultural, chemical,
civil, electrical, industrial and
mechanical. A 'woman taking
any of these fields should use
her electives in secretarial study
the dean recommends.
Many women graduates have
become outstanding in their
fields, the dean notes. A govern
ment report shows some 7,000
women engineers in the nation.

Paul says
I'm w
a peach!
Paul thinks it's just wonderful the
way I keep our house looking
practically perfect and still have
time to do so many other things.
The plain truth is that I've found
faster, easier ways to get my work
done. Take wood floors. Cleaning
and waxing them was something
fierce. I can still remember how
my muscles ached for days after.
But not now. It's almost a .
pleasure with Bruce Cleaning Wax.
There's no floor washing at all!
Bruce cleans and waxes at the
same time. And my wood floors
really look beautiful. Much nicer
than when I did them the hard
way. If you have wood floors,
you'll really appreciate Bruce
Cleaning Wax.
Incidentally, Fe found other Bruce
floor products help me, too. There's
Bruce Floor Cleaner for cleaning and .
lighter waxing, Bruce Paste Wax,
Bruce Asphalt Tile Cleaner, Bruce
Asphalt Tile Self-Polishing Wax and
the new Bruce
Self-Polishing
Wax. Yes,
