39 Influenza Cases Reported Last Week
A total of 39 cases of influ
enza were reported to the Jack
ton county health department
last week. Seventeen cases of
measles were listed on the week
ly communicable disease report.
Other cases included two of
scarlet fever, three pink eye,
one mumps, three pneumonia,
one impetigo, three chicken pox
and one strep throat.
Air Force 'Spies' Work Way Into Vital Bases as Test of Security
Omaha, Neb. (U.R) The Air
Force is sending "spies" and "sa
boteurs" into vital bases of the
Strategic Air Command to test
the effectiveness of their secur
ity barriers.
Undercover agenfs worm
through guarded gates with
forged passes. They pose as
milkmen or soda pop salesmen.
Inside, they steal secrets or
plant "bombs" to destroy equip
ment. Col. Edward A. Crouchley,
chief of internal security for the
SAC, says special teams of
agents have been carrying out
these exercises since mid-1953.
"They are quite, often success
ful," he admits.
The engine of a pickup truck
conks out as it passes a flight
line and the driver wanders off
to get help. Later, the truck is
found to contain simulated ex
plosives which would have
blown up millions of dollars
worth of aircraff.

Ore., woman has been added to
the list of housewives invited to
the "Women's Congress on
Housing" to be held here April
23, 24 and 25 by the Housing
and Home Finance agency.
She is Mason D. McQuiston.
So far a total of 77 have been
invited to come here at govern
ment expense to give housing of
ficials an idea of what home

Not To Shut Down

O'Connor ' has no intention of
shutting down the National
Foundation for Infantile Par
alysis when polio is beaten.
"Ten years ago a man asked
the question and I told him we'll
close up shop when the time
comes," O'Connor said. "But
that's now now. The public
wouldn't stand for it. There are
too many other things we can
do."
The dynamic foundation presi
dent was in a nostalgic mood.

versary of the nationwide Salk
inoculation program which has
brought his dream of conquer
ing polio nearer reality than ever
before.
Tomorrow, too, is the anniver
sary of the death of President
Roosevelt, O'Connor's longtime
friend and law partner ' who
launched the foundation from
the White House more than 18
years ago.
. "I've been fighting polio for
31 years in and out of the found
ation," O'Connor said. "But the
last three years with the vaccine
have been the most fascinating.
"I think now that we can bring
polio under control in four or
five years. There is no question
of it. We will have accomp
lished our main mission."

forces have been thinned by re
duced appropriations and dis
charges since the end of the Ko
rean war. Guards have been

meter of bases to points nearer
flight lines, weapon storage
areas and fuel tank fields.
But big sentry dogs are being
used to beef up the security zon
es, and penetration agents say
the psychological effect of the
snarling German Shepherds is
terrific.
The SAC crews, says Crouch
ley, are the toughest element to
protect. The friendliness and
"big mouth" of the average U.S.
serviceman is a threat difficult
to overcome.
Talkative Airmen
Agents have learned the en
tire plans for SAC missions sim
ply by sitting in a tavern and
listening to airmen gossip. Oth
ers have posed as insurance
salesmen in order to ask ques
tions. The loose-lipped airmen get a
stern dressing down for talking

out of turn, and have been sub
jected to restriction of privileges
and in some cases demotion. As
a result they soon get "gun-shy"
of inquisitive strangers.
Mechanical devices also are
being used to tighten up the se
curity of SAC bases. Chief
among these is an electric fence
now being tested at several sites.
They signal any approach to the
fence. Still in the blueprint stage
is a device named the "black
box." It can be placed beneath
a parked aircraft and, like the
electronic fence, will flash a sig
nal at a guard post if anyone ap
proaches the plane.
