film studio messenger girl has
returned triumphantly to Holly-
wood as the
movie's only
female writer
producer - di
rector - editor
with her sec
ond highly
praised film
under her trim
belt.
Only a few
Aline Mosby years ago Ruth
Orkin was running through the
halls of MGM Studios to deliver
mail and coffee to famed execu
tives and movie-makers.
"But I could see," she smiled
today while here on a visit from
her New York home, "that it
would take me years to get any
place in such a big organization."
Ruth quit. She and her hus
band, Morris Engel, became still
photographers in New York. But
three years ago Engei designed
his own portable movie camera
and they scored a sensation by
making a film themselves, "The
Little Fugitive."
Surprise Witness
Heard at Fong Trial
Portland (U.R) The de
fense called a surprise witness
in the Wey Him Fong murder
trial here yesterday who related
that she once had heard 16-year-old
Diane Hank threaten to kill
herself.
Mrs. Ethel M. Snell, a clean
ing woman, testified that one
time when in the Fong home
late in 1953, a young Chinese
youth visited the one-time Fong
baby sitter and that Diane was
upset when he left.
"If he stands me up again, I'll
kill myself," Mrs. Snell quoted
the Hank girl as saying.
She also testified that Diane
took a pill and fell asleep and
that later she was unable to
awaken her.
Earlier in the day, Wey Him
Fong had taken the stand and
denied he had ever given any
barbiturates to Diane Hank. He
is on trial for the second time
for murder in connection with
the girl's death in 1954.

Critics Raved
This year the husband-wife
team is drawing raves from the
critics again for their second
home-made efort, "Lovers and
Lollipops." Like their first pic
ture, the second full-length film
was shot entirely in New York,
with the big city as their set.
"We couldn't make these films
without my husband's small
movie camera," she explained.
"That way we can shoot in
Macy's without anybody know
ing it. And, as magazine photo
graphers, we learned to be in
conspicuous." Some 15 persons invested in
the Engels' first picture, and two
people are backing "Lovers and
Lollipops." The budget for the
do-it-yourself movie is a secret,
because it's so low "it would be
embarrassing" to reveal, they
said.
Child Featured
"The Little Fugitive" featured
a small boy, and "Lovers and
Lollipops" also stars a child- bor
rowed from the Engels' neighbor.
The couple gave the child, a
nine-year-old girl, presents dur
ing the shooting to keep her
interested.
Ruth was ' net only the co
writer, co-director and co-producer
of "Lovers and Lollipops"
with her husband, but she also
edited it and works as her own
press agent. She even acted in
the picture.
"The last day of shooting we
needed somebody to portray a
baby-sitter so I stepped in. It
was an emergency," she said.
"My back was out of whack so
I had to play the scene lying
down. When we previewed the
film, people thought that scene
was such a wonderful touch!"
